This study involved a series of case studies that were combined with an extensive literature review to frame and construct a large-scale survey, measuring systematic innovation capability, and innovation performance (IP). Previous literature is quite fragmented with little inherent cohesion. Relatively few truly holistic studies have been done, especially in a large-scale multi-industry context. The case studies and structural equation modelling (SEM) in the present study validated important predictor variables of IP, including leadership and innovation strategy, customer focus and innovation process management, culture and human resources management, knowledge and technology management. The SEM determined that systematic innovation capability is a valid concept and can be measured as such, relating strongly to IP and business performance. Based on deep case studies and our large sample, innovation capability was demonstrated to be a holistic concept comprising a number of core elements that act together to strongly determine performance outcomes.


The distinctive feature of petroleum businesses is its wide scope. After crude oil or gas extraction, resulting semi-products undergo dozens of transformation stages in supply chains to reach the final customer. Combination of quantity and quality multiplied by external market factors produce price fluctuations that are challenging for world economics. In this regard process management might be carried out to improve supply chain performance and assure the maximum business predictability. However, for such large-scale organizations it requires big effort in operational analysis, process enhancement and process control via information systems which successfully support traditional management in function-oriented organizational structures. This chapter explores the developed engineering matrix that embraces potential methods and tools applicable for oil and gas industry. Additionally, it reveals industrial peculiarities and delivers case studies about Iranian and Hungarian petroleum companies.

With the implementation of State Grid’s management system, ‘Three Intensive Management And Five Large-scale Movements,’ it is inevitable for municipal power supply enterprises to promote and build value management. Based on value management, with management features of municipal power supply enterprises’ other expenses, whole process management will be combined with enterprises’ realities to build management system for other expenses, strengthen control of other management expenses in the event, track key projects and form a closed-loop dynamic cost management, which will make up for lack of the feedback of traditional cost management mode on other management expenses.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to provide a conceptual model for the transformation of big data sets into actionable knowledge. The model introduces a framework for converting data to actionable knowledge and mitigating potential risk to the organization. A case utilizing a dashboard provides a practical application for analysis of big data. Design/methodology/approach The model can be used both by scholars and practitioners in business process management. This paper builds and extends theories in the discipline, specifically related to taking action using big data analytics with tools such as dashboards. Findings The authors’ model made use of industry experience and network resources to gain valuable insights into effective business process management related to big data analytics. Cases have been provided to highlight the use of dashboards as a visual tool within the conceptual framework. Practical implications The literature review cites articles that have used big data analytics in practice. The transitions required to reach the actionable knowledge state and dashboard visualization tools can all be deployed by practitioners. A specific case example from ESP International is provided to illustrate the applicability of the model. Social implications Information assurance, security, and the risk of large-scale data breaches are a contemporary problem in society today. These topics have been considered and addressed within the model framework. Originality/value The paper presents a unique and novel approach for parsing data into actionable knowledge items, identification of viruses, an application of visual dashboards for identification of problems, and a formal discussion of risk inherent with big data.

Inter-institutional collaboration among physicians becomes increasingly important and yet, it’s unrealistic to assume that cooperation can be supported via a homogeneous system which is pre-installed in every organization. Instead physicians will typically have their own autonomous systems that support internal processes. Traditional activity-oriented workflow models or content-oriented process models do not resolve inter-institutional integration challenges. The authors present the a-Flow approach for distributed process management, which enables ad hoc collaboration via active electronic documents without the need to integrate local systems. A distributed case file, the a-Doc, is used to coordinate cooperating parties. Using this case file does not require any preinstalled system components, so true ad-hoc information interchange is enabled. The case file contains both, the inter-organizational process schema as a document, as well as arbitrary content documents that are shared among the cooperating parties. To illustrate the approach an inter-institutional use case is provided by cooperative breast-cancer treatment. The authors explain the rationale behind separating content, decision support, and coordination work and in large-scale inter-institutional scenarios its necessary to decouple collaboration functionality from the existing applications and to resolve the duality between content-oriented and activity-oriented process models.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate and analyze the challenges of quality skill development in complex and large economies like India and develop innovative processes of improving employability. Design/methodology/approach The problem areas and gaps have been identified through literature survey and published reports by governmental agencies on employability and quality skill development in India. The research focuses on prevalent challenges for large-scale skill development and utilizes TRIZ (Russian acronym for “Theory of Inventive Problem Solving”) for finding innovative solutions to the grand challenge of employability. Findings The applied research methodology in the paper leads to a model for the “Innovation driven ecosystem for quality skill development” and also defines the role and responsibilities of each stakeholders in the ecosystem. Research limitations/implications Solutions derived through TRIZ are qualitative in nature. The actual implication of solution needs to be tested after implementation. Further, intangible costs incurred, and harmful and useful effects cannot be easily quantified. Practical implications The parameter mapping for the TRIZ matrix was undertaken in this paper and this methodology when applied to other problem statements renders an organized process for improving total quality and innovative process management. The inventive principles were applied to find solution to contradictions and arrive at an integrated ecosystem which binds all stakeholders efficiently, to generate higher employability. The innovative solutions derived through the process are applicable to policy makers, researchers and practitioners. Social implications The process of improving employability through quality skill development, benchmarked by the TRIZ methodology can have far reaching social implications. Originality/value The research extends the body of knowledge of TRIZ modeling concepts in areas other than engineering, and depicts a unique total quality methodology which can be easily applied for other problem-solving contexts. The contribution can serve as a reference technique/tool for improving reliability and quality through a methodical process of working out innovative solutions to solve operational problems.

PurposeThis paper investigates the criteria for a selective integration, in the multidisciplinary business process management (BPM) areas, between information technologies tools and the company's internal control systems (ICSs) aimed at directing organizational behaviours. Adopting a process-based perspective, the authors propose a formal methodology to increase ICSs aims, related to the segregation of duties (SoDs) models, efficiently and effectively.Design/methodology/approachThe authors examine the applicability of formal verifications to validate a banking process of providing investment services, which is mapped through the workflow management system. To mitigate the state explosion problem of formal methods, the authors propose an efficient methodology that has been proved on the SoDs models in the bank ICSs, as a case study.FindingsThe authors’ investigations suggest that in the BPM domain, the banking ICSs aims can benefit from the aforesaid methodologies, originating from the formal methods area, to increase the reliability and correctness in the design, modelling and implementation of the SoDs models.Originality/valueThe proposed methodology is quite general and can be efficiently applied to large-scale systems in different business contexts or areas of the BPM. Its application to the bank's SoD prevents or detects significant weaknesses, operational risks, excessive risk appetite and other undesirable behaviours in the investment services provision processes. This guarantees that the investment ordered/offered is “suitable and appropriate” with the client's risk profile, especially non-professional, required by the MiFID II Directive.

  Publish/ subscribe (pub/ sub) is a popular communication paradigm in the design of large-scale distributed systems. We are witnessing an increasingly widespread use of pub/ sub for a wide array of applications in industry, academia, financial data dissemination, business process management and does not end in social networking sites which takes a large area of user interests and used network bandwidth. Social network interactions have grown exponentially in recent years to the order of billions of notifications generated by millions of users every day. So, it has become very important to access in the field of publishing and subscription networks, especially peer-to-peer (P2P) networks in many ways like the publication speed for events And the percentage of loss in the incoming events of the participants. Peer-to-peer systems can be very large and include millions of nodes, those nodes join and leave the network continuously, and these characteristics are difficult to handle. The evaluation of a new protocol in a real environment, particularly in the early stages, was considered impractical. Hence the need for a simulator to perform such a function to facilitate the simulation of researchers and this emulator is an open source simulator running within the Eclipse environment. In this research we have adopted a new method of selecting nodes within the table of vicinity protocol. This method is concentrated in that the far node increases the probability of its inclusion in the table more than the adjacent node. and The proposed network that uses the Polder Cast protocol was modelled using PeerSim software for modelling deployment and subscription networks within the eclipse environment so that the event delivery service is a Peer-2-Peer network and the method used to register is subject-based (Topic-Based). experimental results showed noticeable improvement in the publication speed for events by 51.11% compared to the original design of the protocol. And The percentage of event loss was reduced by 20%.
