Engineering Peer Play: A New Perspective on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Early Childhood Education

In unprecedented times, the global community is calling for greater knowledge and engagement in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to support the decision making and practices of the general community. COVID-19 has highlighted this pressing need and inviting a ‘new normal’. But STEM is not the core business of early childhood. What role can the early childhood education research community take? This paper reports on a cultural-historical study that investigated how a Conceptual PlayWorld changed the traditional Froebelian play areas to support girls’ play and motives in STEM. The question guiding that study was how could a Conceptual PlayWorld overcome the problems previously identified in the literature on girls’ inclusion in STEM activities in preschools. In our educational experiment we implemented a Conceptual PlayWorld over 12 weeks (123 hour of digital video observations), with a focus on role-playing ‘as if’ engineers and scientists (five 4-year-olds and eight 5-year-olds). The outcomes show how a Conceptual PlayWorld created new kinds of 21century learning areas. Spaces traditionally difficult for girls to enter, were transformed and afforded completely new ways of playing, shown to be inclusive of girls, and disrupted gendered interactions and divergence.

Suitable education in current development is surely required for every children in order to adapt with changes that occur, this certainly need to be addressed by looking for proper solution used in early childhood learning process, because early childhood education can give great benefit in growth and development for children, it also brings great positive impact for cognitive development, physical, emotional and social in children. Early childhood education is being talked about by applying new STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics.) method. This method focuses on collaboration, communication, research, problem solving, and critical thinking ability. Through this approach, children are expected, not only academically intelligent but also socially, it also can stimulate children development optimally.     Research aims to find out the extent of implementation STEAM Method for early childhood developing. Method used in the research is qualitative descriptive with classroom teacher, Headmaster, and children in Mutiara Paradise Kindergarten as data source. Techniques of data collection are interview, observation and documentation. Technique of analysis and data collection are reduction, data display and conclusion drawing/verification. The result of the research shows the implementation of STEAM Method is very useful for children development, not only the children able to think critically in solving problem, but also children encounter very good social development.

Learning in Early Childhood Education (ECE) today should adjust the 21st century competency framework. In this case, learning innovation is needed to actualize a generation that is creative, innovative, critical thinking, able to communicate and collaborate. STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Art Mathematics) - based ECE learning is currently seen as an approach that aims to stimulate creativity and  prepare children in a world of work that is full of innovation and invention. Research shows that there is a positive relationship between STEAM experience at early age and school success in the future. The purpose of this study is to describe the implementation of STEAM-based ECE learning in Semarang City. Three ECE schools that have implemented STEAM-based learning in Semarang City were included as research subjects. The research methods used were qualitative with observation, interview and documentation as a data collection technique. The research focus of the research results include: 1) Story times in STEAM class, 2) STEAM Processes in learning, 3) STEAM activities in class. Data analysis results show that the implementation of STEAM-based learning is not fully integrated, so assistance by expert teams is needed and there is no  comprehensive learning media tool.Pembelajaran di PAUD sekarang ini hendaknya menyesuaikan kerangka kompetensi abad 21, dimana inovasi pembelajaran sangat dibutuhkan untuk mewujudkan generasi yang kreatif, inovatif, berpikir kritis, mampu berkomunikasi dan berkolaborasi. Akhir-akhir ini STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Art Mathematics) dipandang sebagai sebuah pendekatan untuk menyiapkan generasi abad 21, yang bertujuan untuk menstimulasi kreativitas, menyiapkan anak-anak dalam dunia kerja yang penuh inovasi dan invensi. Riset menunjukkan bahwa ada hubungan positif antara pengalaman STEAM di awal usia dengan kesuksesan sekolah di masa mendatang. Adapun tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan pelaksanaan pembelajaran STEAM di PAUD. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah kualitatif, pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui observasi, wawawancara dan dokumentasi. Sedangkan hasil penelitian ini mendeskripsikan: 1) Storytimes dalam kelas STEAM, 2) STEAM Process dalam pembelajaran, 3) Aktivitas STEAM di kelas. Hasil analisis data menunjukkan bahwa implementasi pembelajaran berbasis STEAM tidak sepenuhnya terintegrasi, sehingga diperlukan bantuan oleh tim ahli dan tidak ada alat media pembelajaran yang komprehensif.

This chapter aims to shed light on the relationship between the development of laterality and the learning of mathematics in early childhood education using the ABN method. Thus, the authors present an experience developed with 24 children of 4 and 5 years old from several sessions of physical education where laterality and mathematics were worked on in the framework of a project developed in the classroom. The neuropsychological laterality test and a psychomotor table with values referred exclusively to manual and foot laterality, and indicators referred to the ABN method were used as evaluation instruments. The results obtained indicate that students with homogeneous right- or left-handed laterality obtain better results, as well as those with crossed laterality, since they have defined their manual and foot dominance. However, students with undefined laterality obtain worse results, even showing a lateral tendency towards the use of the right side of the body.

This text begins with a concern related to teacher education which will focus on early childhood education, specifically in regards into the sciences and knowledge relating to the axes undertaken to frame the curriculum of the first stage of basic schooling as nature, culture and society. Science for young children should be considered as the foundation of all later development and is clear that it is not understood as it should be. But now, it is being more discussed taking account that these children have their development in a holistic perspective (Johnston, 2009; Johnston & Tunnicliffe, 2008). It should be noticed that the approach of knowledge related to science in Early Childhood Education, discussed in this text, does not take place in an isolated way, should be developed on a proposal mainly integrating the different fields of knowledge, to explore, in the articulation of knowledge, the wealth of exploitation and appropriating the world by the children. According to Johnston (2011) science teaching should be encouraged in the early years, aiming at reaching a holistic sense, that is, seeking not only understanding the scientific concepts but also developing attitudes and abilities related to them. Thus, the understanding of scientific concepts is closely related to both the development of knowledge in other areas such as geography, history and mathematics and to the social skills, such as collaboration, cooperation, etc and attitudes such as enthusiasm, initiative, curiosity etc.

STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) education is currently gaining ground in many parts of the world, particularly in higher stages of the educational system. Foreseeing a development of STEAM policy and research also in the early years, this colloquium seeks to bring questions of gendering processes to the table. The authors aspire to prevent the development of a gender-blind STEAM discourse for early childhood education. Instead, they encourage practitioners and researchers to make use of STEAM education to recognise and transcend gendered norms connected to children’s being and learning in the arts, STEM and STEAM.
