AbstractProduct life cycles change, market developments and quantities are increasingly difficult to predict, as is the case in the production of charging stations. For these reasons, scalable assembly concepts with an adaptable degree of automation are becoming increasingly important. Currently, charging stations are still manufactured manually. With increasing quantities, however, manual production is no longer economical. New technologies such as lightweight robotics offer a great potential for making production more flexible in terms of quantity. At the same time, new challenges arise because these requirements must be taken into account from the very beginning of product development and process planning. Currently, there are no planning approaches and recommendations for action that take this into consideration. Therefore, the research project “Simultaneous product and process development of a charging station outlet module suitable for automation” (SUPPLy) develops an integrated, digital and simultaneous product and process development of a modular charging station suitable for automation. The aim of the project is to develop an assembly process which enables an economic production of charging stations in case of fluctuating sales figures. The focus is not only on changes in the production process but also on a product design that is suitable for automation. The paper presents the ideas on a conceptual level.

‘Lean, heavy, and disruptive projects’ considers how project management was transformed in the 1980s and 1990s to manage innovation in increasingly competitive global markets. The ‘lean’ product development approach was created by Honda and Toyota to develop a wider range of products faster and with fewer errors than their Western car manufacturer counterparts. Over the past two decades, lean development has spread to many industries experiencing rapid product obsolescence and shorter product life cycles. It has also been supported by the rise in digital technology. Different project management styles for different types of projects are discussed, including those for breakthrough innovations, as well as portfolio management and project team structures.

Even though the literature on product and process development is extensive, not much attention has been devoted to categorizing the product development process itself. Existing work on product development processes such as Total Design, Integrated Product and Process Design among others advocate common approaches that should be followed throughout the organization, without any consideration of product characteristics. In this paper we review several existing development methodologies. Extensions of these are categorized by their applicability to different classes of products. We propose that development processes should be matched to product attributes and organization goals. Towards this end, we associate development processes along with their components such as House of Quality, Robust Design, TRIZ etc. with goals such as time to market, customer needs satisfaction, intellectual property generation, protection and exploitation, quality, product cost and others. We examine the impact of this association on the development process itself and propose guidelines for constructing specific processes associated with one or more goals. Tools and benchmarks for various applications are discussed, along with some case studies on the design of different development processes.

Although workforce productivity is widely used today, production is quickly moving toward product and process development with customers. Creative customers would like to get more and more involved in product development and furthermore, they would like to get satisfaction not only from the final product but from the processes as well. So we have to introduce a new measure for productivity, which focuses more on how much satisfaction a customer obtains from production. So the new definition of productivity in this sense will be: Customer productivity = Amount of satisfaction / Customer’s psychological time and money (physical and virtual involvement in production) This is different from the current customer satisfaction. Current one is focused on how much satisfaction a customer will have for a final product. This is a definition from the standpoint of the producer. The new definition is from the standpoint of the customer. This paper points out that if we introduce Mahalanobis Taguchi System, such a measure can be established and we can introduce a new metric for measuring customer’s satisfaction for the new type of prosumer system or co-production.

In order to survive in today’s highly competitive global market, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have had to transition from sequential to concurrent product development, which significantly shortens development cycles, reduces costs, and ensures high product quality. Despite its many benefits, concurrent product development is still based on detailed upfront planning and cannot address the challenges related to today’s ever-growing uncertainty, constantly changing environment, and unstable requirements. A potential solution to this problem could be in more flexible and value-driven agile project management (APM) approaches, typical of software development. In this paper, we propose a new product development model specifically appropriate for SMEs that combines concurrent product development principles with APM elements. It is designed as a loop of five repetitive steps (macroplan, microplan, iteration activities, review, and retrospective) that are being executed within individual concurrent development loops. The application of the model is presented on a real case example of process development and small batch manufacture of a complex wiring harness. The study reveals many benefits of the proposed model, such as improved communication, faster detection of discrepancies, more effective problem solving, and greater flexibility. A positive impact on project success is also observed.

Research background: Global competition, fast and dynamic technological change and increasingly shorter product life cycles have changed the current environment of enterprises’ functioning. In order to compete, firms are obliged to introduce new technologies, products, services or organizational systems and are forced to seek competitive advantages in innova-tiveness. Technology transfer becomes a major opportunity to enhance competitiveness and innovativeness of enterprises. The use of technology transfer and implementation of innova-tions allows companies to meet the requirements of the market and international competition. This paper discusses innovation activity occurring in industrial enterprises in Poland at present.Purpose of the article: The aim of the article is to determine the level of innovativeness in gaining the competitive position of surveyed Polish enterprises. The purpose of the article is to determine the occurring innovation activity and the novelty level of innovations implemented in the group of surveyed firms.Methods: The study is based on a survey on industrial firms (n=100) located in Poland. Data was collected during 100 individual interviews with high- and medium-level managers of randomly selected companies.Findings & Value added: The research has determined the level of innovativeness in gaining the competitive position of the surveyed firms. As the survey showed, enterprises prevailed the range of implementation of material innovation - product and process. Rarely firms implement non-material innovations. The study pointed to low activity in the field of patenting and implementing innovations with a high level of novelty. According to the obtained results, there is a dominant introducing new form the companies side innovations, which causes low competitiveness of surveyed enterprises. These findings suggest that measurement of innovativeness in gaining the competitiveness should be developed. The findings support the need for Polish enterprises to participate in advanced forms of technology and knowledge procurement.

Lean manufacturing accomplishments have led researchers and practitioners to consider extending lean to different engineering enterprise parts, including product and process development. However, in the early phases of product development, it is important to both reduce costs and improve a product's sustainability performance. This paper develops a framework to guide designers and manufacturing managers to design products that better meet customer needs and requirements for sustainable products and services. To achieve this, a critical review of the existing literature in the field of lean design, and eco-design was conducted to fill the research gap and then develop the proposed methodological framework. The integration aimed to create synergies to extend the integration benefits and promote rational use of resources and time to create value for customers by eliminating waste and unnecessary actions in the product development process. The main objective is to ensure the development of products with minimal negative impacts on the natural environment. To our knowledge, this is the first time in the literature that an integrated framework is bringing together lean design and eco-design principles, practices, guidelines, drivers, barriers, and success factors. The framework can potentially serve product designers, manufacturing engineers, sales/marketing personnel, in fact, anyone who has a vested interest in designing environmentally friendly products.

Abstract Changing customer preferences, demand for quality and new technologies have led to very short product life cycles. This requires firms to have short product development lead times while keeping product cost low and quality high in order to stay competitive. In this context, we focus on improved understanding of design iterations. We are creating tools for modeling product development projects in order to predict the performance of product development organizations. In this paper, signal flow graphs are presented as a flexible tool for design process modeling. Illustrated using an industrial example, key project performance metrics including the probability distribution of lead time, and to identify key drivers of lead time.

This paper focuses on the design of a charging unit for an electric vehicle fast charging station. With this purpose, in first place, different solutions that exist for fast charging stations are described through a brief introduction. Then, partial power processing architectures are introduced and proposed as attractive strategies to improve the performance of this type of applications. Furthermore, through a series of simulations, it is observed that partial power processing based converters obtain reduced processed power ratio and efficiency results compared to conventional full power converters. So, with the aim of verifying the conclusions obtained through the simulations, two downscaled prototypes are assembled and tested. Finally, it is concluded that, in case galvanic isolation is not required for the charging unit converter, partial power converters are smaller and more efficient alternatives than conventional full power converters.

Electric vehicle charging station have become an urgent need in many communities around the world, due to the increase of using electric vehicles over conventional vehicles. In addition, establishment of charging stations, and the grid impact of household photovoltaic power generation would reduce the feed-in tariff. These two factors are considered to propose setting up charging stations at convenience stores, which would enable the electric energy to be shared between locations. Charging stations could collect excess photovoltaic energy from homes and market it to electric vehicles. This article examines vehicle travel time, basic household energy demand, and the electricity consumption status of Okinawa city as a whole to model the operation of an electric vehicle charging station for a year. The entire program is optimized using MATLAB mixed integer linear programming (MILP) toolbox. The findings demonstrate that a profit could be achieved under the principle of ensuring the charging station’s stable service. Household photovoltaic power generation and electric vehicles are highly dependent on energy sharing between regions. The convenience store charging station service strategy suggested gives a solution to the future issues.
