SummaryFactor VIII procoagulant activity (F VIII: C) and factor VIII related antigen (F VIII R: Ag) were investigated in 35 patients with Argentine hemorrhagic fever. Since the results obtained in the three clinical forms of the disease were not significantly different, they were tabulated altogether. F VIII: C was low in early stages of the disease but increased progressively in later days (days 5–6:0.54 ± 0.10 I.U./ml; days 13–14:0.95 ± 0.13 I.U./ml). In contrst, the levels of F VIII R: Ag were high all along the disease and they returned to normal values during the convalescence period (days 5–6; 2.58 ± 0.54 I.U./ml; day 30: 1.30 ± 0.14 I.U./ml). The levels of F VIII R: Ag were similar in samples drawn before (11 cases) or after (10 cases) the treatment with immune plasma infusion. Plasma samples from 12 patients were studied by two-dimensional immunelectrophoresis. The only abnormality found was increased height of the immune precipitation arc.

In modern medical literature, discussions continue about neuropathies of the facial nerve in children, disease factors, clinical and neurological features, the severity of the course, the difficulties of diagnosis and prognosis of the disease. The work is devoted to the analysis of the neuropathy of the facial nerve in children and adolescents, depending on the clinical forms of the disease, using electroneurosympathetic indicators, the latency period, the blinking reflex and thenatureof the lesion of the facial nerve accompanied by pain syndrome

Traumatic brain disease (TBHD) is a pathological process triggered by the damaging effect of mechanical energy on the brain and is characterized — with a variety of clinical forms — by the unity of etiology, pathogenetic and sanogenetic mechanisms of development and outcomes.

Method of calculating the index of crisis of gratification has been developed on the basis of the complete survey of 995 students of medical university and 804 students of engineering university, determination of clinical and social parameters and factors related to the process of education in the specialized university. It included: a scale for the assessment of the degree of intellectual intensity, academic performance, stress situations related to the peculiarities of education. Reliable differences in values between groups of healthy students, students with preclinical and clinical forms of mental disorders are revealed as a result of calculation of the index of gratification. The authors conclude that satisfaction with the results of education has a significant impact on the mental health of university students.

Leishmaniasis is a neglected disease caused by protozoan belonging to the Leishmania genus. There are at least 16 pathogenic species for humans that are able to cause different clinical forms, such as cutaneous or visceral leishmaniasis. In spite of the different species and clinical forms, the treatment is performed with few drug options that, in most cases, are considered outdated. In addition, patients under classical treatment show serious side effects during drug administration, moreover parasites are able to become resistant to medicines. Thus, it is believed and well accepted that is urgent and necessary to develop new therapeutic options to overpass these concerns about conventional therapy of leishmaniasis. The present review will focus on the efficacy, side effects and action mechanism of classic drugs used in the treatment of leishmaniasis, as well as the importance of traditional knowledge for directing a rational search toward the discovery and characterization of new and effective molecules (in vivo assays) from plants to be used against leishmaniasis.

AbstractPrion diseases are distinguished by long pre-clinical incubation periods during which prions actively propagate in the brain and cause neurodegeneration. In the pre-clinical stage, we hypothesize that upon prion infection, transcriptional changes occur that can lead to early neurodegeneration. A longitudinal analysis of miRNAs in pre-clinical and clinical forms of murine prion disease demonstrated dynamic expression changes during disease progression in the affected thalamus region and serum. Serum samples at each timepoint were collected whereby extracellular vesicles (EVs) were isolated and used to identify blood-based biomarkers reflective of pathology in the brain. Differentially expressed EV miRNAs were validated in human clinical samples from patients with human sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (sCJD), with the molecular subtype at codon 129 either methionine-methionine (MM, n = 14) or valine-valine (VV, n = 12) compared to controls (n = 20). EV miRNA biomarkers associated with prion infection predicted sCJD with an AUC of 0.800 (85% sensitivity and 66.7% specificity) in a second independent validation cohort (n = 26) of sCJD and control patients with MM or VV subtype. This study discovered clinically relevant miRNAs that benefit diagnostic development to detect prion-related diseases and therapeutic development to inhibit prion infectivity.
