This chapter presents a case study on rural e-municipalities in Kyrgyzstan as an enabling tool for facilitating and supporting democratic local governance. The authors examine the case based on their action research and discuss key findings in terms of challenges of implementing and sustaining ICT-enabled local governance observed throughout the life cycle of the real life project. The case presentation is guided by the conceptual framework built on an extensive literature review. Key findings and lessons drawn from this case study can guide policy makers and practitioners in other developing countries in designing and implementing similar initiatives with careful consideration of national development context, enabling political, administrative, and legal environment, governance structure and decentralization policies, institutional framework, and strength of rural municipalities and local communities. This chapter’s possible contribution to research includes improving understanding of the implementation and sustainability issues of rural e-municipality as one of the critical e-governance initiatives at the grassroots level.

This paper introduces student-initiated projects outside the classroom as an effective method for developing intended learning outcomes (ILOs) based on Effat university graduate characteristics and national accreditation standard for learning and teaching. The characteristics of the university graduate are based on the IQRA values (core values that stand for: adopting research for life, social values, responsible and creative leadership, and effective communication). Furthermore, the academic programs ILOs are designed according to National Qualification Framework (NQF) of the National Commission of Academic Assessment and Accreditation (NCAAA). Effat Ambassadors Program (EAP) is a co-extra-curricular program with ILOs that focus on developing Effat student as ambassadors of IQRA values. ILOs related to social and educational values and responsible leadership are the most difficult to achieve and assess; therefore a construtivist approach towards leadership learning is described as “Life Immersion Learning Learning Model” (LIM). This paper demonstrates LIM by focusing on one of the EAP projects initated by the Student Government, which was to launch a TEDx EffatU chapter for Effat University in Saudi Arabia. This project, as a real life project, was found to yield excellent results in terms of meeting characteristics of Effat graduate, especially for social & educational values and responsible leadership. Another result is the optimum student and teacher satisfaction and involvement.

The Internet has become a major dissemination and sharing platform for 3D content. The utilization of 3D measurement methods can drastically increase the production efficiency of 3D content in an increasing number of use cases where 3D documentation of real-life objects or environments is required. We demonstrated a developed, highly automated and integrated content creation process of providing reality-based photorealistic 3D models for the web. Close-range photogrammetry, terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) and their combination are compared using available state-of-the-art tools in a real-life project setting with real-life limitations. Integrating photogrammetry and TLS is a good compromise for both geometric and texture quality. Compared to approaches using only photogrammetry or TLS, it is slower and more resource-heavy but combines complementary advantages of each method, such as direct scale determination from TLS or superior image quality typically used in photogrammetry. The integration is not only beneficial, but clearly productionally possible using available state-of-the-art tools that have become increasingly available also for non-expert users. Despite the high degree of automation, some manual editing steps are still required in practice to achieve satisfactory results in terms of adequate visual quality. This is mainly due to the current limitations of WebGL technology.

Purpose Graduate employability represents a fundamental outcome of higher education. The purpose of this paper is to explore and compare students’ perceptions of their employability through their experience of a simulated or real-life project. The context of the project is a capstone course, implemented in an Australian university, which was designed to enhance employability and foster transferable graduate attributes, including professional communication, interpersonal and leadership skills. Design/methodology/approach The authors designed and conducted quantitative research to capture and measure students’ perceptions of their employability at the conclusion of a capstone course over three consecutive years from 2015 to 2017. Findings The results of this paper show that students undertaking a real-life project which makes a social contribution reported a significantly stronger development of work-ready skills in managing projects than students undertaking a simulation project. Specifically, interaction with industry and leadership were reported to be more developed. Originality/value The study contributes to knowledge of the relationship between capstone learning and students’ perceptions of employability. It advances the understanding of capstone course design and pedagogy which strengthens the link between learning and work.

Abstract Abstract 242 Introduction Hydroxyurea (HU) has proved its efficacy in reducing vaso-occlusive events in patients with SCD and increasing life expectancy. However, effects on fertility in adult males represent a major issue for acceptance and adherence, as HU has been reported to impair spermatogenesis through direct cytotoxic effects and hypogonadism. There are only limited data in the literature in this field and mainly retrospective. Patients and methods 49 adult patients aged 20–52 years with homozygous SCD eligible for first line HU treatment were enrolled after informed consent between June 2010 and April 2012 in this prospective study: HYDREP.The main objective was to compare at Day 0 and 180 of HU treatment the semen parameters according to the WHO (1999) criteria(volume, sperm concentration, viability, forward motility and morphology ). Vaso-occlusive events and other complications, number of transfusions during the 6 months preceding and following HU initiation were recorded. Hematological, biochemical, hormonal parameters, HU dosage were recorded at Day 0, Day 90 and 180. HU was begun at 15mg/Kg dose (Platt *) and modulated following haematological tolerance and renal function. Results and discussion Preliminary results concern the 24/49 patients, who complete the 6 months protocol. A statistically significant impairment in all sperm parameters was observed, after a 6 months HU therapy, with great variations between individuals, which are to be explained by complementary tests. These preliminary deleterious findings must be interpreted with caution as in our experience 1) spermatogenesis may recover after drug withdrawal 2) Repeated vaso-occlusive events are also potentially deleterious on fertility (Berthaut **)and 3)this study must be completed with a survey on effective fertility seen in men treated with HU. Thus, regarding to the great benefit offered by HU on prognosis allowing a real “life project” in young symptomatic adults with SCD, it is worth providing each patient of the most accurate information on fertility as an essential prerequisite for their adhesion to HU treatment. Conclusion Sperm cryopreservation is advised before beginning a treatment with HU. Prospective follow up studies of HU male cohort regarding fertility are warranted. Health education has a major role to play to increase HU compliance especially in view of these results. Disclosures: No relevant conflicts of interest to declare.

Fast-track construction projects are becoming increasingly prevalent in the construction industry, particularly where completion time is essential. A high adoption rate in some of the United Arab Emirate countries and the lack of a conceptual understanding of the challenges inherent in such may jeopardize the future sustainability of the construction sector. To make an informed decision about adopting a fast-track construction method, it is necessary to first identify the opportunities and challenges associated with it. Therefore, this study examines the critical challenges impeding the performance of Qatar’s fast-track construction projects. The research findings were analysed and triangulated using a real-life project as a case study and several data sources. The results of the research identified four critical categories of barriers: design and coordination-related, scope or change orders-related, material and equipment-related, and contractual-related barriers. In addition, strategies such as accurate information, constructability assessment, early involvement of operations and maintenance personnel, and the use of an effective change control system were identified for addressing the identified challenges. The findings are beneficial to professionals who are currently operating or planning to undertake construction projects in Qatar or other United Arab Emirate countries. This study recommends that project managers be more attentive to key barriers in order to improve the performance of fast-track projects and to meet clients’ objectives.

Open source projects may face a forking situation at some point during their life-cycle. The traditional view is that forks are a waste of project resources and should be avoided. However, in a wider technological and organisational context, forks can be a way to foster the creation of a software ecosystem. Either way, forking is explicitly allowed by open source licenses. Notwithstanding, methods for quantifying the evolution of forks are currently scarce. The present work attempts to answer the question whether a real-life project has forked. It does so by considering code and organisational characteristics of the project, and analysing these characteristics by applying methods ported from biological phylogenetics. After finding that the project is forked, implications for project governance are discussed.

This research is looking at the concept of sustainable project management and its importance in real life project management. Firstly, the research will examine the meaning of sustainability and sustainable management. Next, it will examine, evaluate and classify the different drivers for the integration of sustainability in project management as social, economic, legislative and environmental drivers. Then, the research will discuss the potential benefits of implementing sustainability in project management throughout project's lifecycle. The researcher concluded that there are many environmental, social/ethical, legislative and economic benefits derived from integrating sustainability into project management throughout project's lifecycle, however, there are some restrictions as the tools for integration are still under development.

This chapter will explore the value of using computerized simulation case studies to enhance learning in project management education at the undergraduate and graduate college levels. Traditional teaching methods of textbook reading and lectures provide students with a vast number of concepts, processes, tools, and procedures for managing projects. However, it is difficult for students to translate that learning into use in real-life project management situations. Simulations are filling that gap by offering a low-risk environment with lifelike scenarios where students must determine the appropriate project management concept to employ and how to execute it. Simulations allow students to use their newly learned concepts and critical thinking for decision making while receiving immediate feedback which allows the student to make adjustments. This chapter will also discuss the value of these simulations based on the timing of when to introduce them to students during the semester.
