In order to meet the needs of enterprises for chamfering complex parts, based on the customization of commercial CAD/CAM software, chamfer programming software is developed. According to user’s machining demands for a part, a chain of edges of a part is extracted from its 3D model. With preprocessing of the chain of edges, the continuity of the chain is estimated, and the start and end point of those edges are automatic obtained. Furthermore, with human-machine dialogue, machining parameters is set by users. By definition of the primary and secondary surfaces of the chain of edges, and interpolation of the edges, the positions of cutter location point and postures of cutter are calculated. Finally the interference of tool path is checked, and tool path is simulated. The software solves the programming problem of chamfering complex parts.

Architectural design is one of those areas that have actively employed interactive design tools such as CAD/CAM software. In order to add a realistic view of the design results in the 3D work process, there have been several recent attempts to employ a virtual reality technology that allows architects to explore design in 3D space. However, VR’s weakness is that common interaction tasks, such as navigation and selection, are still not supported conveniently in 3D space. In addition, VR devices are generally unfamiliar to the average person and are too expensive to use. This paper presents a VR framework that makes the design task easily achieved by employing a PDA interface for a VR interaction applied to street-view emotional color design problems.

With the development of scroll technology, the requirements of more efficient and more accurate processing method for scroll compressor parts become more urgent. This paper proposes a method to improve the machining effect of scroll compressor. The approach is based on 3-point arc approximation method which divides combined profile of scroll wrap into subparagraph arcs that can be interpolated on CNC System. This approach simplifies the programming process and improves the curve fitting effect. The results indicate that the fitting error is in the predetermined range, and the interpolation points of cutter center track are significantly less than those based on CAD/CAM software. The method presented in this paper is of significance to the NC machining of novel precise scroll profile.

The impeller blades are hard to machine for its complex and curved surface structures. It is almost impossible to manufacture the blades by manual programming on Numerical Control Tool. Now, the program almost is completed by the three-dimensional CAD/ CAM software, such as UG, Pro/Engineer, CimatronE which have a lot of machining strategies suitable for a wide variety of parts. However, the result is not perfect if you choose improper strategies. Even more, machining marks will be left on the parts’ surface. This paper takes the impeller for an example and gives the solutions for eliminating machining marks left on the impeller blades’ surface through a comparative analysis on the 3-axis finish machining strategies in CimatronE.

In computer vision, 3D modeling refers to the process of developing 3D representation of the real world objects with systematic procedure. The 3D models can be built based on geometric information about the object or scene to be modeled using CAD/CAM software. However, this approach needs prior knowledge of the objects in the scene like dimension, size of objects, distance from the object to camera, et cetera. To make the 3D models more photo realistic and convenient, images of the objects can be used to build the 3D models. In this chapter, the authors propose a method to extract 3D model from single view perspective image. The approach is based on edge length and exploiting symmetric objects in the scene. Later, an application of touring into picture is discussed with the proposed method.

Micro power system is becoming more and more important for micro- and nano-scale system. The fast development of MEMS (Micro Electromechanical Systems) has strongly enhanced the application of new harder work materials. The fabrication of metallic 3D microstructures has been one of the most attractive topics of micro machining. Currently the basic materials of Micro-turbine Engineering were nonmetal materials such as SiC, most of them are 2D or quasi-3D structures. This paper focuses on the manufacturing process on micro compressor prototype by micro-EDM milling. The micro compressor prototype contains the rotor disk and stator disk. A simple tool path generation by CAD/CAM software and a general electrode wear compensation strategy is presented. The micro compressor prototype with rotor and stator disks was successfully fabricated by using this strategy, and the materials of workpieces are nickel alloy GH4169 and titanium alloy TC4.
