We report the synthesis of room temperature (RT) stabilized γ–Bi2O3 nanoparticles (NPs) at the expense of metallic Bi NPs through annealing in an ambient atmosphere. RT stability of the metastable γ–Bi2O3 NPs is confirmed using synchrotron radiation powder X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. γ–Bi2O3 NPs exhibited a strong red-band emission peaking at ~701 nm, covering 81% integrated intensity of photoluminescence spectra. Our findings suggest that the RT stabilization and enhanced red-band emission of γ‒Bi2O3 is mediated by excess oxygen ion vacancies generated at the octahedral O(2) sites during the annealing process.

AbstractWe present a kinetic model for solid state phase transformation ($$\alpha \rightleftharpoons \beta$$ α ⇌ β ) of common zirconium alloys used as fuel cladding material in light water reactors. The model computes the relative amounts of $$\beta$$ β or $$\alpha$$ α phase fraction as a function of time or temperature in the alloys. The model accounts for the influence of excess oxygen (due to oxidation) and hydrogen concentration (due to hydrogen pickup) on phase transformation kinetics. Two variants of the model denoted by A and B are presented. Model A is suitable for simulation of laboratory experiments in which the heating/cooling rate is constant and is prescribed. Model B is more generic. We compare the results of our model computations, for both A and B variants, with accessible experimental data reported in the literature covering heating/cooling rates of up to 100 K/s. The results of our comparison are satisfactory, especially for model A. Our model B is intended for implementation in fuel rod behavior computer programs, applicable to a reactor accident situation, in which the Zr-based fuel cladding may go through $$\alpha \rightleftharpoons \beta$$ α ⇌ β phase transformation.

Brain adaptation to chronic hypobaric hypoxia in rats

Rats were exposed to hypobaric hypoxia (0.5 atm) for up to 3 wk. Hypoxic rats failed to gain weight but maintained normal brain water and ion content. Blood hematocrit was increased by 48% to a level of 71% after 3 wk of hypoxia compared with littermate controls. Brain blood flow was increased by an average of 38% in rats exposed to 15 min of 10% normobaric oxygen and by 23% after 3 h but was not different from normobaric normoxic rats after 3 wk of hypoxia. Sucrose space, as a measure of brain plasma volume, was not changed under any hypoxic conditions. The mean brain microvessel density was increased by 76% in the frontopolar cerebral cortex, 46% in the frontal motor cortex, 54% in the frontal sensory cortex, 65% in the parietal motor cortex, 68% in the parietal sensory cortex, 68% in the hippocampal CA1 region, 57% in the hippocampal CA3 region, 26% in the striatum, and 56% in the cerebellum. The results indicate that hypoxia elicits three main responses that affect brain oxygen availability. The acute effect of hypoxia is an increase in regional blood flow, which returns to control levels on continued hypoxic exposure. Longer-term effects of continued moderate hypoxic exposure are erythropoiesis and a decrease in intercapillary distance as a result of angiogenesis. The rise in hematocrit and the increase in microvessel density together increase oxygen availability to the brain to within normal limits, although this does not imply that tissue PO2 is restored to normal.

Aerobic metabolism (oxygen consumption, [Formula: see text], and carbon dioxide production, [Formula: see text]) has been measured in newborn rats at 2 days of age during normoxia, 30 min of hyperoxia (100% O2) and an additional 30 min of recovery in normoxia at ambient temperatures of 35 °C (thermoneutrality) or 30 °C. In normoxia, at 30 °C [Formula: see text] was higher than at 35 °C. With hyperoxia, [Formula: see text] increased in all cases, but more so at 30 °C (+20%) than at 35 °C (+9%). Upon return to normoxia, metabolism readily returned to the prehyperoxic value. The results support the concept that the normoxic metabolic rate of the newborn can be limited by the availability of oxygen. At temperatures below thermoneutrality the higher metabolic needs aggravate the limitation in oxygen availability, and the positive effects of hyperoxia on [Formula: see text] are therefore more apparent.Key words: neonatal respiration, oxygen consumption, thermoregulation.
