Biodiversity of Thrips Species (Thysanoptera) on Flowering Herbs in Cracow, PolandThrips specimens were collected from 2004 to 2006 from the Herb Collection of the Faculty of Horticulture, the Agricultural University in Cracow, Poland and from 2006 to 2008 from the Botanical Garden in Cracow, Poland. We collected 16,058 adult thrips belonging to 22 Thysanoptera taxa from the flowers and inflorescences of 37 species of herbs from both of the collections. Thrips species composition infesting the flowers and inflorescences of herbs were very similar and not dependent on the plant species and the area of research. Only the participation of particular species differed. The prevailing polyphagous species connected with flowers were:Thrips fuscipennis, Thrips flavus, Frankliniella intonsa, Thrips albopilosusandThrips major. Also, a high number ofThrips tabaciand random species connected with grass as well as predatory speciesAeolothripswere found. The flowers ofSalvia officinalis, Lavandula angustifolia, Nepeta catariaandArnica montanawere the most numerously infested by adult thrips.

Mutomo hill plant sanctuary is a ten-hectare piece of land in Kenya listed as a botanical garden under the Botanical Gardens Conservation International, originally established in 1964 with the aim of conserving indigenous flora from destructive anthropogenic activities. This paper presents ethnobotanical documentation of medicinal plants of Mutomo hill plant sanctuary and its environs. An ethnobotanical survey was carried out in Mutomo hill plant sanctuary and its environs with 48 herbalists aged between 32 and 96 years from July 2018 to February 2019 using a semistructured open-ended questionnaire. The plants were collected through random surveys with each herbalist in different ecotypes around the villages and within the Mutomo hill plant sanctuary. The Relative Frequency of Citation (RFC) for each species reported was calculated to determine the plant species frequently collected. In total, 68 different plant species distributed in 28 families and 54 genera were reported. The frequently used plant families were Leguminosae (13 species), Lamiaceae (6 species), and Euphorbiaceae (6 species). Shrubs (37%) and trees (34%) were the dominant growth habits reported. The most cited plant species were Cassia abbreviata Oliv. (RFC = 0.63), Acacia nilotica (L.). Delile (RFC = 0.54), Strychnos heningsii Gilg (RFC = 0.46), and Aloe secundiflora Engl. (RFC = 0.31). Root (19 species) and bark (19 species) were the frequently collected plant parts. Infectious diseases (33) and digestive system disorders (24) were reported to be managed with the majority of the plant species. This study contributes to safeguarding the traditional knowledge on medicinal plants in the study area, which is useful in appreciating and acknowledging the cultural heritage of the Kamba people from the local perspective of Mutomo area in Kenya. It also adds to the knowledge base and documentation of medicinal plants, which is useful information as potential data for drug development.

The aim of the study was to scientifically evaluate the antimycobacterial activity of selected indigenous medicinal plants from the Limpopo Province used for the treatment of humans with symptoms ofMycobacterium tuberculosis. The leaves of five plant species (Apodytes dimidiata, Artemisia, Combretum hereroense, Lippia javanica, and Zanthoxylum capense) were collected from the Lowveld National Botanical Garden in Nelspruit, South Africa. The dried leaves were powdered and extracted using hexane, dichloromethane, acetone, and methanol. Antimycobacterial activity was evaluated using microdilution assay and bioautography andρ-iodonitrotetrazolium violet (INT) as indicator. Antioxidant activities were determined by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH). Phytochemical content of extracts was further evaluated. The acetone extracts ofL. javanicadisplayed antioxidant activity on BEA chromatogram. T Acetone extracts ofA. afrahad MIC value of 0.39 mg/mL againstMycobacterium smegmatisATCC 1441. Acetone extracts ofC. hereroenseandL. javanicahad MIC value of 0.47 mg/mL. Four bands that inhibited the growth ofM. smegmatiswere observed atRfvalues of 0.12, 0.63, and 0.87 on BEA and 0.73 on EMW. The plant speciesA. dimidiata, A. afra, C. hereroense,andL. javanicain this study demonstrated their potential as sources of anti-TB drug leads.

Working group of the Department of Plant Conservation of the National Botanical Garden of Georgia (NBGG) have been participating in the global Millennium Seed Bank Partnership, led by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew since 2005. During the 2005-2018 period, within the scope of MSB-1 and MSB-2, seeds and herbarium samples of more than 1750 plant species and interspecific taxa, belonging to 107 families and 483 genera (more than 41% of Georgia’s flora) – 348 endemics of Caucasus and 151 endemics of Georgia, have been secured in the National Seed Bank of Georgia (NSB). Seed Bank data are managed in BRAHMS (Department of Plant Sciences of Oxford University). The collection of wild plant species is accompanied by the comprehensive database of geographical, botanical and habitat information. Later phase involves laboratory treatment and germination/viability testing (at least 500 seeds per species) and the long-term deposition and storage (under -20◦C temperature) at the National Seed Bank of Georgia. The duplicates of seed collection and herbarium vouchers are stored at the Millennium Seed Bank of Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, UK. Germination capacity and viability of collections in NSB is determined before cold storage of seeds, while at the MSB already banked seeds are tested.Keywords: Seed bank; Ex-situ conservation; Plant diversity; Botanical garden; Genetic resources

The article assesses the richness of the collection fund of Siberian plants that grew in the historical periodfrom 1954 to 1963 and grow in the modern period from 2011 to 2020 in the collection “Alpine Slides” of the Peter the GreatBotanical Garden. The main purpose of this article was to assess the preservation of the collection fund of Siberian andpartly Central Asian plants in the historical aspect. It was necessary to identify the plant species that are most resistant tocultivation in the conditions of St. Petersburg. As a result of the comparison, it was found that at present the collection fundof plants is quite poor, compared to the selected historical segment, and it needs to be replenished. The most stable in thecollection were 22 species, as they existed in the collection both in the selected time periods and exist at the present time.The age of individuals of individual species reaches almost 80 years – Brunnera sibirica, Bergenia × ornata, Actaea dahurica,A. simicifuga, Nepeta sibirica, Spodiopogon sibiricus and others. In the modern period of time, more than 20 species didnot pass the initial introduction test and existed in the collection for no more than 2–3 years. These include Viola altaica,Mertensia sibirica, Peucedanum baicalense, Orostachys thyrsiflora and others.

Increasing anthropogenic pressure, global climate change, and the lack of large introduction centers in the Chernihiv region makes it important to preserve rare species of flora ex situ outside this administrative region. The article presents the results of the study of taxonomic composition and evaluation of the success of the introduction of rare plant species of Chernihiv region in the M. M. Gryshko National Botanical Garden of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The study of rare plant species and the development of methods for their effective reproduction was initiated in the NBG in 1970 in a separate section “Rare plants of the flora of Ukraine.” It is established that the collection grows and protects 57 phythorarites of Chernihiv region, of which 29 species are listed in the Red Book of Ukraine (III edition), and 28 species – in the “List of regionally rare plant species of Chernihiv region”. Most plants successfully recover ex situ with moderate care or without additional human intervention. The biomorphological spectrum of introduced plants is dominated by cryptophytes (50.88 %) and hemicryptophytes (42.11 %), the shares of phanerophytes, hamephytes and therophytes are insignificant. 17 species of phythorarites formed stable homeostatic populations. Of these: 5 species are listed in the Red Book of Ukraine (Allium ursinum, Crocus reticulatus, Epipactis helleborine, Galanthus nivalis, Pulsatilla pratensis) and 12 species – in the “List of regionally rare plant species of Chernihiv region” (Aster amellus, Corydalis intermedia, C. marschal, Daphne mesereum, Equisetum hyemale, Iris hungarica, Phlomis tuberosa, Primula veris, Pteridium aquilinum, Scilla bifolia, S. sibirica, Vinca minor). Thus, the cultivation of almost a third of the phythorarites of Chernihiv region in the M. M. Gryshko National Botanical Garden testifies to the effectiveness of their preservation ex situ.

A Restinga está relacionada a qualquer ambiente arenoso litorâneo brasileiro, e geralmente apresentam espécies vindas de outros ecossistemas. Entretanto, existe uma carência em levantamentos florísticos nestes ambientes. Sendo necessário estudos para o aprofundamento no conhecimento da biodiversidade destes locais. O presente trabalho objetivou levantar as espécies presentes no Jardim Botânico de São Gonçalo do Amarante, no município de São Gonçalo do Amarante-CE. As coletas foram realizadas entre o período de outubro/2017 à abril/2019, através de caminhadas em períodos de seca e chuva por toda a extensão do Jardim, onde foram coletadas todas as plantas com estruturas férteis para a posterior identificação taxonômica das espécies vegetais. O material coletado foi herborizado e posteriormente depositado no Herbário Prisco Bezerra (EAC) da Universidade Federal do Ceará. A identificação ocorreu a partir de chaves de identificação, bibliografia especializada, consulta aos especialistas, comparação com espécimes de herbário e espécimes-tipo. Foram inventariadas 158 espécies vegetais, pertencentes a 121 gêneros, distribuídas em 58 famílias. As famílias mais representativas foram Fabaceae (29 espécies), Rubiaceae (12 spp.), Asteraceae (sete spp.), Euphorbiaceae (seis spp.), Myrtaceae (seis spp.), Convolvulaceae (cinco spp.), Malvaceae (cinco spp.), Turneraceae (cinco spp.) e Verbenaceae (cinco spp.), as quais somam 50,63% da flora amostrada. O hábito mais representativo na área de estudo foi herbáceo, representado por 53 espécies, seguido por árvore com 35 espécies, arbusto com 34 espécies, subarbusto com 20 espécies e trepadeira com 16 espécies. Podemos concluir com o presente estudo a grande heterogeneidade do local estudado, além da grande diversidade de famílias presentes. Floristic Composition of the São Gonçalo do Amarante Botanical Garden, Ceará, Northeast Brazil A B S T R A C TRestinga is related to any Brazilian coastal sandy environment, and generally presents species from other ecosystems. However, there is a shortage of floristic surveys in these environments. It is necessary studies to deepen the knowledge of the biodiversity of these places. The present work aims to survey the species present in the São Gonçalo do Amarante Botanical Garden, in the municipality of São Gonçalo do Amarante. The collections were carried out from October/2017 to April/2019, through walks in periods of drought and rain throughout the Garden, where all plants with fertile structures were collected for later taxonomic identification of plant species. The collected material was herborized and later deposited in the Herbarium Prisco Bezerra (EAC) of the Ceará Federal University. Identification was based on identification keys, specialized bibliography, expert consultation, comparison with herbarium specimens and standard specimens. A total of 158 plant species, belonging to 121 genera, were distributed in 58 families. The most representative families were Fabaceae (29 species), Rubiaceae (12 spp.), Asteraceae (seven spp.), Euphorbiaceae (six spp.), Myrtaceae (six spp.), Convolvulaceae (five spp.), Malvaceae (five spp.), Turneraceae (five spp.) which account for 50.63% of the sampled flora. The most representative habit in the study area was herbaceous, represented by 53 species, followed by tree with 35 species, bush with 34 species, sub-shrub with 20 species and creeper with 16 species. We can conclude with the present study the great heterogeneity of the studied place, besides the great diversity of families present.Keywords: Restinga, inventory, flora.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and dark septate endophyte (DSE) associations were studied in 36 medicinal plant species from 33 genera and 17 families, collected from the Botanical Garden of the Jagiellonian University in Kraków. Arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM) was found in 34 species (94%); 26 were of the <em>Arum</em>-type, 4 – <em>Paris </em>and 4 taxa revealed intermediate morpho­logy. The abundance of AMF hyphae in roots varied with particular species, ranging from 2.5% (<em>Helianthus tuberosus</em>) to 77.9% (<em>Convallaria majalis</em>). The mycelium of DSE was observed in 13 plant species (36%), however, the percentage of root colonization by these fungi was low. Spores of 7 AMF species (Glomeromycota) were isolated from trap cultures established from rhizosphere soils of the investigated plants: <em>Archaeospora trappei </em>(Archaeosporaceae), <em>Glomus aureum</em>, <em>Glomus caledonium</em>, <em>Glomus claroideum</em>, <em>Glomus constrictum</em>, <em>Glomus mosseae</em>, <em>Glomus versiforme </em>(Glomeraceae). Our results are the first detailed report of root endophyte associations of the plant species under study. Moreover, the mycorrhizal status of 14 plant species is reported for the first time.
