The Village

Rural economic development is an important thing to do given the national economic development should start from the village. One of the efforts that can be done to develop the economy of the village is through entrepreneurship village, which can be the strategy in the development and growth of the welfare of the village community. Entrepreneurship village can be developed through the establishment of Badan Usaha Milik Desa (BUMDes). Rural regions that can not be separated from the agricultural sector, with the importance of the role of agricultural sector to the economy of the country, then the business BUMDes needs to be directed or developed with the activities of the agriculture-based businesses. The results obtained from this research is that BUMDes-based agriculture in the Juli District, Bireun District is in quadrant IV (diversify activities). In this quadrant the position of the organization is in the market is very small and the growth rate is low, therefore it is necessary to diversify the business. This position indicates an organization is weak and facing a big challenge. The recommendations of the given strategy is a survival strategy, meaning that the internal conditions of the organization is on the choice of a dilemma. Therefore, organizations are advised to use a defensive strategy, control of the performance of the internal so not getting mired. This strategy is maintained while continuing to attempt to fix themselves.

This study examines the role of entrepreneurial orientation (EO) and collaborative engagement on the performance of rural economic development organizations. The authors theorize that an organization’s EO and collaborative engagement, determined by levels of active engagement within a regional collaboration network, impact its ability to accomplish its goals, satisfy its stakeholders, and influence regional economic development. The authors’ analysis of data from 98 collaborating economic development organizations operating in the economically distressed region of eastern Kentucky shows that EO and collaborative engagement are positively associated with performance. This study provides actionable insights for leaders of economic development organizations seeking to improve their operations.

This study is aimed to analize the role of middlemen in rural economic institution and formulate the economic development model through optimalization the role of middlemen. This study was done by conducting literature research. Data were analized by using qualitative method. The results of study conclude that middlemen have strategic positions in rural economic development although their role has negative and positive side. In evolving the positive side, there must be other institution which has capability to substitute part of middlemen role. That is microfinance institution (MFIs) which also play the role as an empowerment institution. In loan mechanism, the middlemen can be functioned as a credit guarantee institution. Credit guarantee from middlemen is not only as a contract in agriculture product marketing, but also as the supervision way to create obedience in loan repayment by farmers. The implementation of this pattern is purposed to nurture the social capital in rural economic system.

This paper presents the role of Islami Bank Bangladesh Limited (IBBL) to the recent economic development in Bangladesh. The study analyses published texts, articles, websites and annual report of this bank through a content analysis. Key findings of this study manifest the contribution of this bank in different areas of economic development in Bangladesh like generating employment, earning foreign remittance, strengthening rural economy, promoting ecology and green banking, boosting industrialization, developing the SMEs, assisting in foreign trade (import-export), developing the housing sector etc. This study also identifies IBBL’s significant contribution to the national exchequer. This paper contributes to the field of economic development of Bangladesh and the role of IBBL behind it and fills the gap of literature in this specific area.IIUC Studies Vol.9 December 2012: 323-334
