Abstract While Universal Design principles have been adopted in many areas to ensure that products and services are usable for the broadest possible diversity of users, there is still an open area when it comes to the emergency management domain. This article aims at providing a systematic overview of the current state of the emerging research field of Universal Design of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for Emergency Management, and to highlight high-impact research opportunities to ensure that the increasing introduction of ICT in Emergency Management can contribute to removing barriers instead of adding more barriers, in particular for the elderly and people with disabilities. A systematic review on relevant literature on Universal Design, ICT and Emergency Management between 2008 and 2020 was employed using predefined frameworks, to answer the following questions: (1) Who are the target audiences (stakeholders) in research on Universal Design of ICT in Emergency Management in the different categories of Emergency Management ICT tools, and to what degree is Human-Centred Design and Universal Design taken into account? (2) What are the most important challenges and gaps in research on Universal Design of ICT in Emergency Management? We identify a set of gaps in the literature, indicating that there are some challenges where Universal Design is still limitedly addressed in technology development. We also derive promising future research topics based on areas that are missing in the literature.

Electric power wheelchairs (EPWs) enhance the mobility capability of the elderly and the disabled, while the human-machine interaction (HMI) determines how well the human intention will be precisely delivered and how human-machine system cooperation will be efficiently conducted. A bibliometric quantitative analysis of 1154 publications related to this research field, published between 1998 and 2020, was conducted. We identified the development status, contributors, hot topics, and potential future research directions of this field. We believe that the combination of intelligence and humanization of an EPW HMI system based on human-machine collaboration is an emerging trend in EPW HMI methodology research. Particular attention should be paid to evaluating the applicability and benefits of the EPW HMI methodology for the users, as well as how much it contributes to society. This study offers researchers a comprehensive understanding of EPW HMI studies in the past 22 years and latest trends from the evolutionary footprints and forward-thinking insights regarding future research.

Investigating real-life disasters and crises has been challenging due to accompanying difficulties and risks posed by these complex phenomena. Previous research in the emergency management domain has largely relied on qualitative approaches to describe the event after it occurred. To facilitate investigations for more generalizable findings, this paper documents ongoing efforts to design an emergency management simulation testbed called Team Emergency Operations Simulation (TEOS) in which an incident management team (IMT) is situated. First, we describe the design process based on our previous work. Next, we present the overall description of TEOS including representative roles, tasks, and team environments. We also propose measures of team performance of the IMT and propose future research that can be realized through TEOS.

Τhis study is a critical review of published scientific literature on the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), Virtual Reality, multimedia, music and their applications in children with special learning difficulties.  Technology and music are two factors that are recognized as tools which ensure quality of life, success and access to knowledge and learning resources. In the following papers of the last decade (2006-2015) are proposed models of music therapy for students with special learning difficulties in a psycho educational setting. There are also defined future research perspectives concerning the applications of technology in this particular research field.

The importance of looking into microgrid security is getting more crucial due to the cyber vulnerabilities introduced by digitalization and the increasing dependency on information and communication technology (ICT) systems. Especially with a current academic unanimity on the incremental significance of the microgrid’s role in building the future smart grid, this article addresses the existing approaches attending to cyber-physical security in power systems from a microgrid-oriented perspective. First, we start with a brief descriptive review of the most commonly used terms in the latest relevant literature, followed by a comprehensive presentation of the recent efforts explored in a manner that helps the reader to choose the appropriate future research direction among several fields.

There is no dearth of speculation about the use and misuse of drugs among older persons in American society. Scattered reports have indicated that the elderly increasingly use and misuse a wide variety of drugs, and in very recent years much public attention and concern has been directed toward this problem in the older population. Factual information, however, particularly incidence of use and factors related to elderly drug misuse, is scarce. This paper presents both a review of the relevant literature and a summation of available research evidence with particular reference to patterns of use of legal drugs, the types and extent of misuse of legal drugs, and the issue of illegal drug abuse by the elderly. Conclusions are provided as to what is known at this time regarding elderly drug use and misuse as well as some suggestions regarding future research that might contribute to an understanding of drug-using behavior among the elderly.

The internet is one of the impacts of new technology development, which can be used to find out the culture that exists in certain regional areas. The swift enlargement of information and communication technology has affected the public culture, both in the form of positive and negative impacts. Improvements and technological advances offered in this era make it easier for the community to access many things, one of which is entertainment media such as Netflix. Netflix's new series entitled “Squid Game” is being watched by millions of people around the world because of its unique storyline; it tells the story of a group of adults who are deeply in debt, who struggle to get a prize worth billions of Won (the official currency of South Korea) with their lives at stake. Unfortunately, the young generation nowadays is only a drama connoisseur who just follows trends, without exploring the messages and values contained in them. Therefore, the author analyzes the Netflix series "Squid Game" using an axiological approach as an effort to increase awareness of social issues among generation Z. This study uses a qualitative method with google form as an observation instrument and relevant literature sources. Academically, this research is hoped to contribute to science development which is related to the philosophy of science, and axiology in particular. Practically, it is hoped that it can be useful for readers, especially as a stimulant in the practice of axiological thinking in everyday life. This research shows that Generation Z at first was not aware of the social issues contained in the Squid Game. However, after getting a little stimulant, they can identify social issues that occur in the Squid Game, compare them with social issues in Indonesia, and consider Squid Game as a way to increase awareness of Generation Z on social issues.

Determination of the perceptions of the prospective teachers about Information and Communication Technology (ICT) terms has a remarkable potential to provide input for technology integration plans and ICT training. Within this context, the purpose of this study is to discover the metaphors constructed by prospective teachers for ICT terms. Data were gathered from 180 prospective teachers through a survey. 977 valid metaphors constructed by the participants were grouped into conceptual categories for the six ICT terms. The most common conceptual categories are “developing and changing” for technology, “making life easy” for computers and search engines, “limitless and endless” for the Internet, “means of communication” for social networks, and “addictive items” for video games. Future research should concentrate on investigating the match and mismatches between the intended use of the ICT tools and the perception of the prospective teachers. Keywords: metaphors, ICT, information and communication technology, technology integration, pre-service teacher, teacher education, prospective teachers.

Self-regulated learning is one of the essential skills learners need to possess in times of rapid technological advancements to comply with the requirements of the modern world. Indeed, today's youth are assumed to be able to set their own goals, seek opportunities to attain these goals, and manage their learning environments to control their own learning owing to the omnipresence of information and communication technology (ICT) tools in every area of their lives including and especially in their educational lives. In this respect, this study aims to find out whether first-year English as a Foreign Language (EFL) pre-service teachers really make use of ICT tools to regulate their formal learning experiences in out-of-class settings. Results reveal that pre-service teachers most often fail in bridging in-class and out-of-class learning, and they generally engage in low-level self-regulated learning experiences. Implications arising from these findings are highlighted, and some future research possibilities are discussed.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to analyse the relationship between on-the-job learning and information and communication technology (ICT). Design/methodology/approach – Action research methodology was applied to study 62 small- and medium-sized corporations, and to interview over 200 knowledge workers and managers. The qualitative, textual data collected were transformed into 16 variables and analysed by multidimensional scaling. Findings – The paper provides insights into the optimal use of ICT in intra-organizational knowledge transfer and learning. We found that it is essential to use the right combination and number of technologies, aligned with the organization’s internal processes. Four different types of organizations with sub-optimal usage of ICT and possible strategies for them to reach the optimal zone were identified. For successful organizational learning, however, more is needed: the individual must also understand the value of learning and must be motivated to take part in it. Research limitations/implications – On-the-job-learning can be facilitated with ICT tools but only if the organization invests in the right levels of ICT. Too much technology can be as destructive to on-the-job learning as too little. Future research should look at other contexts (size, age, industry, etc.) to validate these findings. Practical implications – The paper demonstrates the effective use of ICT in knowledge transfer and on-the-job learning. Originality/value – The paper extends our understanding of human–computer collaboration. It highlights that finding the optimal level of ICT is essential for successful knowledge transfer and on-the-job learning.

AbstractThis study aims to synthesize and organize existing the knowledge in the knowledge-based economy (KBE) research field. Using the Web of Science Core Collection, this study conducts a bibliometric literature review of 1228 articles published from 1991 to 2020. The results reveal the research evolution and identify some of the field’s most active and influential articles, journals, and authors. Moreover, this analysis enhances the understanding of the research field’s conceptual and intellectual structure based on a global overview of the relevant literature and its authors. The bibliometric analysis also reveals seven thematic clusters: (1) KBE fundamentals, (2) knowledge management, (3) knowledge work, (4) knowledge generation, (5) knowledge environments, (6) new post-capitalism, and (7) KBE reconceptualization. These clusters provide a holistic view of the field and, in so doing, facilitate future research by providing a research map as to guide the advancement of the existing knowledge on this topic. Based on the bibliometric and content analyses, some future research avenues have been proposed to provide clues for this task.
