AbstractObjectiveThe present study validates a revised scale measuring individuals’ level of the ‘engagement in dietary behaviour’ aspect of ‘critical nutrition literacy’ and describes how background factors affect this aspect of Norwegian tenth-grade students’ nutrition literacy.DesignData were gathered electronically during a field trial of a standardised sample test in science. Test items and questionnaire constructs were distributed evenly across four electronic field-test booklets. Data management and analysis were performed using the RUMM2030 item analysis package and the IBM SPSS Statistics 20 statistical software package.SettingStudents responded on computers at school.SubjectsSeven hundred and forty tenth-grade students at twenty-seven randomly sampled public schools were enrolled in the field-test study. The engagement in dietary behaviour scale and the self-efficacy in science scale were distributed to 178 of these students.ResultsThe dietary behaviour scale and the self-efficacy in science scale came out as valid, reliable and well-targeted instruments usable for the construction of measurements.ConclusionsGirls and students with high self-efficacy reported higher engagement in dietary behaviour than other students. Socio-economic status and scientific literacy – measured as ability in science by applying an achievement test – did not correlate significantly different from zero with students’ engagement in dietary behaviour.

Focus of this research is to describe how the member of Persija FC’s supporter constructing their identities before and after they become the member of The Jakmania. Case study method is used with multi case-single level analysis design. It is found that, in each of three informants’ self, the changing of identities are really happened. One of the changing identities about for example is their social status after they have joined with The Jakmania. In the beginning, before they join with The Jakmania, people did not pay attention to them. It was because their low socio-economic status. Now, after joined The Jakmania, they have their own ingroup that strengthen their individual identity.

The study examined the influence of parent’s socio-economic status on the academic performance of students in selected public secondary schools in Ado Local government Area of Ekiti State, Nigeria. The study used stratified sampling techniques to select two hundred and five (205) students from five (5) public schools. Also, data on students’ academic performance was obtained from students results in four core subjects. Data obtained was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The study revealed that parents attitudes, parents socio-economic status, insufficient parental incomes, and lack of funding by the government are factors influencing students’ academic performance. Based on these findings, certain recommendations are made towards improving students’ academic performance, prominent of these include proper funding of education by government, sensitisation of parents towards their children education, increase in parental salaries in line with the current economic situation as well as the provision of adequate books and facilities in schools to breach the gap between the rich and the poor and the support of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO) to eradicate poverty.

Abstract Background The IPEN International Physical Activity and Environment Network Adolescent project was conducted using common study protocols to document the strength, shape, and generalizability of associations of perceived neighborhood environment attributes with adolescents’ physical activity and overweight/obesity using data from 15 countries. Countries did not use identical versions of the Neighborhood Environment Walkability Scale for Youth (NEWS-Y) to measure perceived neighborhood environment attributes. Therefore, this study derived a measurement model for NEWS-Y items common to all IPEN Adolescent countries and developed a scoring protocol for the IPEN Adolescent version of the NEWS-Y (NEWS-Y-IPEN) that maximizes between-country comparability of responses. Additionally, this study examined between- and within-country variability, and construct validity of the NEWS-Y-IPEN subscales in relation to neighborhood-level socio-economic status and walkability. Methods Adolescents and one of their parents (N = 5714 dyads) were recruited from neighborhoods varying in walkability and socio-economic status. To measure perceived neighborhood environment, 14 countries administered the NEWS-Y to parents and one country to adolescents. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to derive comparable country-specific measurement models of the NEWS-Y-IPEN. Country-specific standard deviations quantified within-country variability in the NEWS-Y-IPEN subscales, while linear mixed models determined the percentage of subscale variance due to between-country differences. To examine the construct validity of NEWS-Y-IPEN subscales, we estimated their associations with the categorical measures of area-level walkability and socio-economic status. Results Final country-specific measurement models of the factor-analyzable NEWS-Y-IPEN items provided acceptable levels of fit to the data and shared the same factorial structure with five latent factors (Accessibility and walking facilities; Traffic safety; Pedestrian infrastructure and safety; Safety from crime; and Aesthetics). All subscales showed sufficient levels of within-country variability. Residential density had the highest level of between-country variability. Associations between NEWS-Y-IPEN subscales and area-level walkability and socio-economic status provided strong evidence of construct validity. Conclusions A robust measurement model and common scoring protocol of NEWS-Y for the IPEN Adolescent project (NEWS-Y-IPEN) were derived. The NEWS-Y-IPEN possesses good factorial and construct validity, and is able to capture between-country variability in perceived neighborhood environments. Future studies employing NEWS-Y-IPEN should use the proposed scoring protocol to facilitate cross-study comparisons and interpretation of findings.

In Pakistan English is taught as a compulsory subject in private as well as public schools form primary till university level. Resulting in the different outcomes by different socioeconomic status student. The current study attempts to study the correlation between socio-economic status and their achievement in the subject of English using survey method. The data was collected through simple random sampling technique. Data was collected 162 students through questionnaire. The descriptive and Pearson correlation were used for data analysis. The results revealed that the students whose parents having managerial category had a high correlation with all the four (sentence, grammar, vocabulary and spelling) skills of English learning. Whereas, students from the unskilled and semiskilled families resulted in a low achievement in English.

AbstractObjectivesTo assess overweight and related risk factors among urban low socio-economic status (SES) African-American adolescents in an attempt to study the underlying causes of ethnicity and gender disparities in overweight.MethodsCross-sectional data collected on anthropometric measures, diet, physical activity and family characteristics from 498 students in grades 5–7 in four Chicago public schools were analysed to study the risk factors for overweight using stepwise regression analysis.ResultsOnly 37.2% of the students lived with two parents. Nearly 90% had a television (TV) in their bedroom, and had cable TV and a video game system at home. Overall. 21.8% (17.7% boys versus 25.1% girls) were overweight (body mass index (BMI) ≥ 95th percentile); and 39.8% had a BMI ≥ 85th percentile. Compared with national recommendations, they had inadequate physical activity and less than desirable eating patterns. Only 66.1% reported having at least 20 min vigorous exercise or 30 min of light exercise in ≥ 5 days over the past 7 days; 62.1% spent >3 h days− 1 watching TV/playing video games/computer, while 33.1% spent ≥ 5 h days− 1. Their vegetable and fruit consumption was low, and they consumed too many fried foods and soft drinks: 55.1% consumed fried food twice or more daily and 19.5% four times or more daily; 70.3% consumed soft drinks twice or more daily and 22.0% four times or more daily on average. Gender, physical activity and pocket money were significant predictors of overweight (P < 0.05).ConclusionsSeveral factors in the students' behaviours, school and family environments may increase overweight risk among this population. There is a great need for health promotion programmes with a focus on healthy weight and lifestyle, and targeting urban low-SES minority communities.

The study analyzes two neighboringcommunities of Muslims in the State of Connecticut, Stamford andNorwalk. The paper also studies the Multicultural Education(MCE)/Diversity curriculum in public schools to find effective waysfor Muslim parents to become involved in their children's education. Inthis context, an examination will be made of education issues affectingMuslim families: ways of increasing achievement scores; the roleplayed by the socio-economic status of a student and hisher schoolingexperience; the importance of the teacher; and the positive relationshipbetween the MCEDversity curriculum and the ideals of democracythat we cherish in this country.
