This paper carried out the study on removal of ammonium from aqueous solutions by zeolite derived from electrolytic manganese residue (EMR) via a fusion method. The variables of pH, contact time, EMRZ (EMR-based zeolite) dosage, initial ammonium concentration, and competitive cations and anions on the ammonium uptake capacity were systematically investigated in an attempt to illustrate adsorption performance of EMRZ. The results show that these influence factors had a remarkable impact on the ammonium uptake capacity of EMRZ. Maximum ammonium uptake capacity was achieved at pH value 8.0, EMRZ dosage 0.2 g/100 mL, contact time 100 min, initial ammonium concentration 200 mg/L, and temperature 35°C. Under optimized conditions, ammonium uptake capacity onto EMRZ was up to 27.89 mg/g. The competitive degree of cations in ammonium adsorption process follows the sequence of Na+>K+>Ca2+>Mg2+, and the sequence of anion effect on ammonium removal onto EMRZ is CO32− > Cl− > SO42− > PO43−. The adsorption kinetic was explored and best represented by pseudo-second-order kinetic model. And the adsorption isotherm experimental data had best fitness with the Freundlich and Koble–Corrigan model, suggesting that heterogeneous uptake was the principal mechanism adopted in the process of ammonium adsorption. Moreover, calculation of thermodynamic parameters such as change in free energy (ΔG), enthalpy (ΔH), and entropy (ΔS) was carried out and it was determined to be −15.77∼−14.03 kJ·mol−1, +37.66 kJ·mol−1, and +173.38 J·mol−1·K−1, respectively. These parameters confirmed that ammonium uptake onto EMRZ was an endothermic and spontaneous process. Moreover, no obvious deterioration tendency was observed for the regenerated EMRZ compared with fresh EMRZ. These results indicate that EMRZ has wide application prospects in removing ammonium from wastewater.

This writing addresses a direct response to as well as shares a careful reflection with Ed Casey and Bob Neville, two of my longtime good friends, whom I invited to a panel I organized for Plenary Section 1, 11th East-West Philosophers’ Conference entitled “Place”, East-West Center, Honolulu, Hawai’i, May 25, 2017. It starts with the question of understanding the meaning of place for humanity and human development. To understand place as the birthplace of life and humanity is essential to understanding what a place is, because a place has to link to other places and to the whole of space as a totality of places. Places are developed historically and transferred to us with their values just like our own life comes to us in the development of our histories and cultures. This leads to the idea of a place as not separable from time. I have only addressed time to some extent in this paper, but I have introduced time as an essential part of our defining characterization of humanity and its resources. This then leads to our deep understanding of humanity as the creative product of time and space, which is derived from a common life origin: creativity. Throughout, I have also elaborated my thinking on the complex issue of “deep roots” and “shallow roots” of Confucianism, in light of inspirations from Bob Neville, who has raised important questions.

The relationship between nitrogen (N) status and N uptake capacity has not been assessed in fruit trees. Determination of root uptake capacity by depletion of unlabeled N from external solution is less costly than methods using 15N, but is reportedly not suited for excised root studies due to reductions in uptake rates with time (Pearcy, R.W. et al. (eds). 1989. Plant Physiological Ecology, p. 195. Chapman and Hall. New York.). We tested two hypotheses: I) excised peach root NH4+ uptake rates are constant over several hours exposure to NH4+ solution and 2) excised peach root NH4+ uptake rates are negatively correlated with tree N status. Mature, N deficient, field grown `O'Henry' trees on `Lovell' peach (Prunus persica L. Batch.) rootstocks and growing in Winters, CA received (NH4)2SO4 at a rate of 200 kg N/ha on September 29, 1993. An equal number of control trees received no N fertilizer. Foliar N deficiency symptoms of fertilized trees disappeared within 3 weeks of fertilization. On Nov. 9, 1993 (prior to leaf fall), excised roots were obtained from two fertilized and two unfertilized trees. Root NH4+ accumulation rates per unit root dry weight or root length were constant over 5 hours of exposure to 70 μM NH4+ (initial concentration) for both fertilized and unfertilized trees. Unfertilized tree root NH4+ uptake rates were significantly greater than those of fertilized trees on a root dry weight or length basis. Excised root NH4+ uptake may prove to be a sensitive index of fruit tree N status.

Ukrainian religious studies have deep roots. We find the elements of it in the written descendants of the writings of Kievan Rus. From the prince's time, the universal way of vision, understanding and appreciation of the world for many Ukrainian thinkers becomes their own religious experiences. The main purpose of their works is not the desire to create a certain integral system of theological knowledge, but the desire to convey their personal religious-minded perception of the divine nature, harmony, beauty and perfection of God created the world.

Although population of the Caucasus has been studied in a rather detailed way, there are peoples whose anthropological portrait is still incomplete. Among them are the Ingush, one of the oldest autochthonous peoples of the Caucasus. This work presents new material on the dental anthropology of medieval Ingush, collected in 2017 during expeditions to the Jairakh and Sunzhen districts of the Republic of Ingushetia. In the Jairakh district, the investigations were carried out in the crypt complexes of the 15th–18th centuries – Targim, Agikal, Tsori, Salgi, and in Sunzhen region - in crypts near the village of Muzgan. The craniological series of medieval Ingush studied according to the dental anthropology program can be described as belonging to the western range of odontological complexes. Unlike most modern Caucasian groups, it does not belong to gracile forms, but rather to a maturized odontological variant, which has deep roots in the Caucasus. The results once again demonstrate a certain conservatism and stability of the dental system, which preserves morphological traits of ancestral groups longer than other anthropological systems.

A simple solvent- and catalyst-free method is presented for the synthesis of the mesoporous metal-organic framework (MOF) MAF-6 (RHO-Zn(eIm)2) based on the reaction of ZnO with 2-ethylimidazole vapor at temperatures ≤ 100 °C. By translating this method to a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) protocol, mesoporous crystalline films could be deposited for the first time entirely from the vapor phase. A combination of PALS and Kr physisorption measurements confirmed the porosity of these MOF-CVD films and the size of the MAF-6 supercages (diam. ~2 nm), in close agreement with powder data and calculations. MAF-6 powders and films were further characterized by XRD, TGA, SEM, FTIR, PDF and EXAFS. The exceptional uptake capacity of the mesoporous MAF-6 in comparison to the microporous ZIF-8 is demonstrated by vapor-phase loading of a molecule larger than the ZIF-8 windows.
