Within the Active Ageing context (WHO), enhancing older peoples’ quality of life by focusing on their participation is essential. Although Active Ageing is relevant in nursing homes, the nursing home residents’ autonomy and participation on organizational level are often restricted. New ways to structurally enhance their participation must be found. This article discusses possible contributions of participatory action research as structural method in a new Active Ageing-envisioned nursing home, enabling residents’ participation and focuses on the practicalities of its implementation process. During an implementation project in the nursing home, participatory action research was introduced in the nursing home as weekly activity where residents assembled to observe the nursing home operation, identify problems and make suggestions for improvement. Based on the researchers’ experiences, implementing participatory action research needs a preparation and adaptation period for the nursing home staff, the participatory action research moderators and the residents to cope with the experienced challenges. Nevertheless, participatory action research appeared feasible and can bring added value to residents’ living conditions. This article contributes to the development of the participatory action research theory and the Active Ageing implementation in nursing home, since it shows the possibilities, challenges and assets of participatory action research towards a more frail population in the nursing home environment. Participatory action research might in turn lead to the realization of Active Ageing nursing home who endeavours to optimize residents’ quality of life.

Abstract Civic participation, initiative and interest in current events can bridge the alienation felt towards national and municipal institutions, thereby enabling individuals to improve their quality of life and contribute to all-round sustainable development of their resident state. This paper reports on a participatory action research study into civic initiatives for securitability involving novice teachers and youngsters from the Latgale region of Latvia. Research participants evaluated national planning documents, enhanced their knowledge and devised civic initiatives to improve the quality of life. Focus group discussions and reasoned argumentative essays were employed to establish how novice teachers (n = 40) and youngsters (n = 58) make sense of the concept of ‘human securitability’. Data analysis was accomplished by qualitative content analysis. The action research exposed an initial understanding of novice teachers and youngsters regarding the human securitability and the possibilities of improving the quality of life. Moreover, this study provided an environment for the research participants to deepen their understanding of said phenomena and participate in educational events envisioning practical engagement with securitability and civic initiatives. The action research study created initiatives for the development of civic securitability and the participation in setting developmental goals.

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a participatory action research (PAR) on reducing the metabolic syndrome risk factors among the Koran adult women. The effectiveness of the PAR intervention was examined using a one-group pretest-post-test design. The data were collected from 58 adult women living in a community health center in Ulsan, Korea, between May and November 2016. The psychosocial factors (empowerment, social support, and quality of life), metabolic-related indices, and health behaviors were collected to measure the intervention’s efficiency. After applying it, the participants’ empowerment, social support, and health-related quality of life increased significantly, as compared to the pre-test. Furthermore, their metabolic-related indices improved significantly in the post-test, as compared to the pre-test. Therefore, the PAR intervention was found to be effective in enhancing the psychosocial factors, metabolic-related indices, and health behaviors in the aforementioned population and could be applied to other community health centers.

One of the areas that have greening problems is RW 04, Gadang, Malang City on the banks of the Brantas river. Lack of greening in this area causes this area to be prone to landslides because the area is very contoured. That's why the focus of community service is to educate the public in the field of greening to improve the quality of the environment in the area. The method used is Participatory Action Research (PAR) which involves community action in its activities. The purpose of this review is to expand understanding of the ways culturally, ethnically, and racially diverse youth have begun to reimagine urban and rural spaces using digital storytelling and photovoice, two methods that often fall under the broad field of youth participatory action research. To explain the conditions under which these methods favor movement toward socially just ideas and actions, we also build on and extend research in critical youth empowerment to call attention to the relational nature of the kind of work that positions youth as coresearchers and democratically engaged citizens. Of importance are the availability of safe, nurturing spaces that foster youth engagement, the quality of relationships between youth and adults, and the extent to which decisions and actions remain in the hands of youth. Finally, this review considers the implications for further research and what it could mean to reimagine schools and communities as spaces where youth have a voice as civically engaged citizens.
