In order to make the contact pressure distribution of polishing wafer surface more uniform during chemical mechanical polishing (CMP), a kind of the bionic polishing pad with sunflower seed pattern has been designed based on phyllotaxis theory, and the contact model and boundary condition of CMP have been established. Using finite element analysis, the contact pressure distributions between the polishing pad and wafer have been obtained when polishing silicon wafer and the effects of the phyllotactic parameter of polishing pad on the contact pressure distribution are found. The results show that the uniformity of the contact pressure distribution can be improved and the singularity of the contact pressure in the boundary edge of polished wafer can be decreased when the reasonable phyllotactic parameters are selected.

Basic design methodology for a new small multistage Turbodrill (turbine down hole motor) optimized for small size Coiled Tube (CT) Turbodrilling system for deep hard rocks mineral exploration drilling is presented. Turbodrill is a type of axial turbomachinery which has multistage of stators and rotors. It converts the hydraulic power provided by the drilling fluid (pumped from surface) to mechanical power through turbine motor. For the first time, new small diameter (5-6 cm OD) water Turbodrill with high optimum rotation speed of higher than 2,000 revolutions per minute (rpm) were designed through comprehensive numerical simulation analyses. The results of numerical simulations (Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)) for turbodrill stage performance analysis with asymmetric blade’s profiles on stator and rotor, with different flow rates and rotation speeds are reported. This follows by Fluid-Structural Interaction (FSI) analyses for this small size turbodrill in which the finite element analyses of the stresses are performed based on the pressure distributions calculated from the CFD modeling. As a result, based on the sensitivity analysis, optimum operational and design parameters are proposed for gaining the required rotation speed and torque for hard rocks drilling.

A finite element simulation model was developed for the performance optimization of a closed type air-cell mattress used for the ulcer prevention. An H-model with material properties of human flesh and kinematic joints were used for the calculation of the body contact pressure. The material property of rubber air-cell was evaluated by tensile test of standard specimen. We evaluated the body contact pressure distribution after laying human model on the inflated air-cell mattress. It was found that the body contact pressure was dependent on cell height, but hardly affected by the cell thickness.

A smart mannequin with the dimension of a standard female body was used for measuring garment pressure. Compression garments made from five kinds of elastic knitted fabrics which are purchased commercially. Results showed that the pressure distributions exhibited obvious differences were varied, and the elongation caused pressure variations among the specimens. This smart mannequin system provides a novel tool for evaluating the pressure performance of compression garments, and give reliable data for functional product development.

This paper presents an investigation of the hot judder phenomenon of multidisc clutches, which takes place during the engagement process. Depending on the results of finite element analysis, a pressure distribution function is defined and a contact pressure equation is established to demonstrate the non-uniformity of the contact pressure distribution on the friction interfaces due to frictional heat. The relationship between the coefficient of friction and the temperature is analyzed. A 4 degrees of freedom power-train model is developed to evaluate the clutch judder behavior. The paper indicates that the clutch judder is influenced by the non-uniformity of the interface contact pressure distribution, which is excited by frictionally induced thermal load. The non-uniform contact pressure distributions along the radial direction have a slight influence on the clutch judder, while the uneven contact pressure distributions along the circumference contribute to the judder substantially. Furthermore, the results in this work can be used to study the operation instability and the thermal failure of clutches.
