Abstract This paper proposes a new approach for superpixel segmentation. It is formulated as finding a rooted spanning forest of a graph with respect to some roots and a path-cost function. The underlying graph represents an image, the roots serve as seeds for segmentation, each pixel is connected to one seed via a path, the path-cost function measures both the color similarity and spatial closeness between two pixels via a path, and each tree in the spanning forest represents one superpixel. Originating from the evenly distributed seeds, the superpixels are guided by a path-cost function to grow uniformly and adaptively, the pixel-by-pixel growing continues until they cover the whole image. The number of superpixels is controlled by the number of seeds. The connectivity is maintained by region growing. Good performances are assured by connecting each pixel to the similar seed, which are dominated by the path-cost function. It is evaluated by both the superpixel benchmark and supervoxel benchmark. Its performance is ranked as the second among top performing state-of-the-art methods. Moreover, it is much faster than the other superpixel and supervoxel methods.

In this paper, we introduce a new approach for detecting community structures in networks. The approach is subject to modifying one of the connectivity-based community quality functions based on considering the impact that each community's most influential node has on the other vertices. Utilizing the proposed quality measure, we devise an algorithm that aims to detect high-quality communities of a given network based on two stages: finding a promising initial solution using greedy methods and then refining the solutions in a local search manner. The performance of our algorithm has been evaluated on some standard real-world networks as well as on some artificial networks. The experimental results of the algorithm are reported and compared with several state-of-the-art algorithms. The experiments show that our approach is competitive with the other well-known techniques in the literature and even outperforms them. This approach can be used as a new community detection method in network analysis.

Image segmentation is an important pre-processing step towards higher level tasks such as object recognition, computer vision or image compression. Most of the existing segmentation algorithms deal with grayscale images only. But in the modern world, color images are extensively used in many situations. A new approach for color image segmentation is presented in this paper. There are many ways to deal with image segmentation problem and in these techniques; a particular class of algorithms traces their origin from region-based methods. These algorithms group homogeneous pixels, which are connected to primitive regions. They are easy to implement and are promising. Therefore, here one of the most efficient region-based segmentation algorithms is explained. The color image is quantized adaptively, using a wavelet transform. Then the region growing process is adopted. As preprocess, before actual region merging, small regions are eliminated by merging them with neighbor regions depending upon color similarity. After this, homogeneous regions are merged to get segmented output.

Previously we reported that tannic acid is a very effective fixative for proteins including polypeptides. Especially, in the cross section of microtubules, thirteen submits in A-tubule and eleven in B-tubule could be observed very clearly. An elastic fiber could be demonstrated very clearly, as an electron opaque, homogeneous fiber. However, tannic acid did not penetrate into the deep portion of the tissue-block. So we tried Catechin. This shows almost the same chemical natures as that of proteins, as tannic acid. Moreover, we thought that catechin should have two active-reaction sites, one is phenol, and the other is catechole. Catechole site should react with osmium, to make Os- black. Phenol-site should react with peroxidase existing perhydroxide.

Muḥammad Saʻīd Al-‘Ashmāwī and Muḥammad Shaḥrūr are well known as contemporary Muslim thinkers. This article tries to map their contemporary ideas on Islamic jurisprudence. The main data of this research taken mainly from the works both of Al-‘Ashmāwī and Shaḥrūr. In particular, the paper tries to analyze Al-‘Ashmāwī‘s ideas on sharia, politics, hijab, marriage and divorce. On the other hand, the ideas of Shahrour on al-Qur'an, Sunnah and Fiqh, the theory of borders, pluralism, the commandment, inheritance, hijab, marriage, divorce, dowry, politics, and imamate are also critizised. After analyzing their lives and their ideas on Islamic jurisprudence, the paper found that their social, educational and practical backgrounds have affected their intellectual formations and ideas. Ashmawi is encouraged by diligence and enlightenment and is believed to be enlightened. Shahrour, however, takes a new approach in order to create the ḥudūd theory as a new way. As well as their intellectual background, Ashmawi has a good queen in Arabic, English and French as well as religion, Sharia, jurisprudence and theology. Shahrour is a good queen in Arabic, English, Russian, philosophy, philology and historical language.

Coordinative constructions are traditionally opposed to subordinative constructions. However, this opposition comes down to denial of dependence in coordinative constructions. Thereby the parity of these two constructions does not come to light: subordinative construction can be described without coordinative one. This situation is not improved by detection of a coordinative triangle in all coordinative constructions. The article shows a new approach in the study of coordinative constructions: a coordinative construction is a system; there are not only specific relations – a coordinative triangle, – but also specific elements. Novelty of the study consists in the address to extralinguistic facts, viz. a mathematical concept of a set and its elements. There are a lot of similarities between them. A set in mathematics includes generalizing elements and the composed row in coordinative constructions; in the first case the set is not partitioned, in the second case it is partitioned. In mathematics equivalent components in coordinative constructions correspond to the set elements. A characteristic property in mathematics is homogeneity in coordinative constructions and etc. It is firstly demonstrated, that coordinative and subordinative constructions are correlative and the study of one construction is impossible without the study of the other one. Their parity is shown in coordinative constructions with elements of one set, in subordinative ones with elements of different sets. Cf.: roses and tulips –red roses. In the coordinatiму construction elements of one set are called: «flowers »; in the subordinative construction there are elements of different sets: «flowers » and «colors». It should be noted that the mathematical concept of a set relates to so called logical aspect in linguistics or thinking about reality.

The paper is intended to provide an overview of advanced robotic technologies within the context of Postal Automation services. The main functional requirements of the application are briefly referred, as well as the state of the art and new emerging solutions. Image Processing and Pattern Recognition have always played a fundamental role in Address Interpretation and Mail sorting and the new challenging objective is now off-line handwritten cursive recognition, in order to be able to handle all kind of addresses in a uniform way. On the other hand, advanced electromechanical and robotic solutions are extremely important to solve the problems of mail storage, transportation and distribution, as well as for material handling and logistics. Finally a short description of new services of Postal Automation is referred, by considering new emerging services of hybrid mail and paper to electronic conversion.

The introduction of automated L5 driving technologies will revolutionise the design of vehicle interiors and seating configurations, improving occupant comfort and experience. It is foreseen that pre-crash emergency braking and swerving manoeuvres will affect occupant posture, which could lead to an interaction with a deploying airbag. This research addresses the urgent safety need of defining the occupant’s kinematics envelope during that pre-crash phase, considering rotated seat arrangements and different seatbelt configurations. The research used two different sets of volunteer tests experiencing L5 vehicle manoeuvres, based in the first instance on 22 50th percentile fit males wearing a lap-belt (OM4IS), while the other dataset is based on 87 volunteers with a BMI range of 19 to 67 kg/m2 wearing a 3-point belt (UMTRI). Unique biomechanics kinematics corridors were then defined, as a function of belt configuration and vehicle manoeuvre, to calibrate an Active Human Model (AHM) using a multi-objective optimisation coupled with a Correlation and Analysis (CORA) rating. The research improved the AHM omnidirectional kinematics response over current state of the art in a generic lap-belted environment. The AHM was then tested in a rotated seating arrangement under extreme braking, highlighting that maximum lateral and frontal motions are comparable, independent of the belt system, while the asymmetry of the 3-point belt increased the occupant’s motion towards the seatbelt buckle. It was observed that the frontal occupant kinematics decrease by 200 mm compared to a lap-belted configuration. This improved omnidirectional AHM is the first step towards designing safer future L5 vehicle interiors.

Abstract Over the last decade, communities have become increasingly aware of the risks they face. They are threatened by natural disasters, which may be exacerbated by climate change and the movement of land masses. Growing globalization has made a pandemic due to the rapid spread of highly infectious diseases ever more likely. Societal discord breeds its own threats, not the least of which is the spread of radical ideologies giving rise to terrorism. The accelerating rate of technological change has bred its own social and economic risks. This widening spectrum of risk poses a difficult question to every community – how resilient will the community be to the extreme events it faces. In this paper, we present a new approach to answering that question. It is based on the stress testing of financial institutions required by regulators in the United States and elsewhere. It generalizes stress testing by expanding the concept of “capital” beyond finance to include the other “capitals” (e.g., human, social) possessed by a community. Through use of this approach, communities can determine which investments of its capitals are most likely to improve its resilience. We provide an example of using the approach, and discuss its potential benefits.

Two novel algorithms for the all-gather operation resilient to imbalanced process arrival patterns (PATs) are presented. The first one, Background Disseminated Ring (BDR), is based on the regular parallel ring algorithm often supplied in MPI implementations and exploits an auxiliary background thread for early data exchange from faster processes to accelerate the performed all-gather operation. The other algorithm, Background Sorted Linear synchronized tree with Broadcast (BSLB), is built upon the already existing PAP-aware gather algorithm, that is, Background Sorted Linear Synchronized tree (BSLS), followed by a regular broadcast distributing gathered data to all participating processes. The background of the imbalanced PAP subject is described, along with the PAP monitoring and evaluation topics. An experimental evaluation of the algorithms based on a proposed mini-benchmark is presented. The mini-benchmark was performed over 2,000 times in a typical HPC cluster architecture with homogeneous compute nodes. The obtained results are analyzed according to different PATs, data sizes, and process numbers, showing that the proposed optimization works well for various configurations, is scalable, and can significantly reduce the all-gather elapsed times, in our case, up to factor 1.9 or 47% in comparison with the best state-of-the-art solution.
