AbstractThis study explored basic psychological needs (BPN) experiences, motivation to continue living, and psychological well-being in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients during adjuvant treatment. Qualitative data from 30 participants (ten CRC patients, ten relatives and ten healthcare professionals) were collected by performing two sets of semi-structured interviews. Three categories were identified: (a) BPN frustration, (b) hope as a source of motivation, and (c) sources of hope. This last category included several subcategories: positive attitude, religious faith, positive medical feedback, knowing that they were going to receive a short-term chemotherapy, and being aware that other patients were in a worse condition. CRC patients felt their basic psychological needs were thwarted during adjuvant treatment. However, hopeful thoughts were reported as relevant sources of motivation to live, which positively impacted on patients’ psychological well-being. Future research could explore the construct of hope as a hypothetical moderator between BPN and CRC patients’ well-being during treatment.

Abstract This study aims to adapt and validate the Satisfaction of Basic Psychological Needs Scale for older people (Échelle de Satisfaction des Besoins Psychologiques chez les personnes âgées, ESBP-PA). A total of 270 participants aged from 60 to 100 years old responded to the survey, which included the ESBP-PA and a psychological well-being scale. Exploratory factor analysis extracted the three-factor structure corresponding to the three basic psychological needs. Internal consistency estimated by Cronbach alpha and composite reliability was good for all three dimensions. With regard to convergent validity, correlation analysis indicated that the satisfaction of the three basic needs is significantly related to psychological well-being. The analysis of the scale's psychometric properties produced satisfying results. The scale is a promising instrument to assess the satisfaction of needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness.

The number of child actors on television, in movies, and on stage has increased dramatically in recent years. While many regulations and laws are in place to protect the physical and financial well-being of these young performers, little attention has been given to their psychological health and the strength of their self-concepts. This paper reviews the literature related to child actors’ psychological well-being and makes a case for future research into the topic. Available data are very limited but suggest that actors may have a weaker self-concept and more psychological concerns than people who are not actors, and that the personalities and behaviors actors display publically may be incorporated into their self-concepts. As a result, child actors appear to have unique psychological needs that should be addressed.

<p>Framed in Self-determination theory (SDT), the purpose of this research was to examine whether the working environment of women in sport management positions could fulfil or thwart their basic psychological needs (BPN) and to explore the motivations that women managers experience in these positions. Eight female managers of top-level sport organizations participated in semi-structured interviews. Results showed that seven of them reported being in an environment that fulfilled their BPN and experienced autonomous motivation in their job. In contrast, one participant reported working in a context that thwarted her BPN and experienced controlled motivation. We present contextual antecedents that were considered satisfying or thwarting of the BPN of those women enrolled in management positions. Insomuch as BPN satisfaction is expected to be related to autonomous motivation and well-being, the current study provides a first insight regarding how sport organizations could promote women managers’ BPN satisfaction and thus increase their autonomous motivation and well-being in such positions.</p>

The teacher’s instructions in physical education class have important implications for the psychological well-being of their students. The aim of this study was to analyze, under the postulates of the Self-Determination Theory (SDT), a model with the following sequence: the perception of the quality of the instructions (task presentation, amount of corrective feedback, and its legitimate perception) generated by the physical education teacher, the satisfaction of the three basic psychological needs and the subjective vitality in young students. The participants were 890 students (462 males and 428 females) of primary level from the metropolitan area of Monterrey, Mexico, between ages 11 and 13 (M = 11.36; SD = 0.49). The structural equation modeling showed positive and significant associations in all model interrelations, that is, task presentation and the amount of corrective feedback (B = 0.88, p &lt; 0.001), and this in turn with legitimate perception (B = 0.81, p &lt; 0.001); the legitimate perception of feedback and the satisfaction of the need for autonomy, competence, and relatedness (B = 0.63, p &lt; 0.001; B = 0.90, p &lt; 0.001; B = 1.01, p &lt; 0.001, respectively); finally, the satisfaction of the three psychological needs and the subjective vitality (B = 0.12, p &lt; 0.01; B = 0.43, p &lt; 0.001; B = 0.24, p &lt; 0.001, respectively). Therefore, the importance of a quality task presentation, as well as providing corrective feedback based on support for autonomy, is evident, so that students perceive it legitimately and thus facilitate the satisfaction of their basic psychological needs and in consequence, indicators of psychological well-being such as subjective vitality.
