(1) Background: The determination of body composition is an important method to investigate patients with obesity and to evaluate the efficacy of individualized medical interventions. Bioelectrical impedance-based methods are non-invasive and widely applied but need to be validated for their use in young patients with obesity. (2) Methods: We compiled data from three independent studies on children and adolescents with obesity, measuring body composition with two bioelectrical impedance-based devices (TANITA and BIACORPUS). For a small patient group, additional data were collected with air displacement plethysmography (BOD POD) and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). (3) Results: Our combined data on 123 patients (age: 6–18 years, body mass index (BMI): 21–59 kg/m²) and the individual studies showed that TANITA and BIACORPUS yield significantly different results on body composition, TANITA overestimating body fat percentage and fat mass relative to BIACORPUS and underestimating fat-free mass (p < 0.001 for all three parameters). A Bland–Altman plot indicated little agreement between methods, which produce clinically relevant differences for all three parameters. We detected gender-specific differences with both methods, with body fat percentage being lower (p < 0.01) and fat-free mass higher (p < 0.001) in males than females. (4) Conclusions: Both bioelectrical impedance-based methods provide significantly different results on body composition in young patients with obesity and thus cannot be used interchangeably, requiring adherence to a specific device for repetitive measurements to ascertain comparability of data.

The present study aimed at comparing the anthropometric profile of Asian Indian adolescents from Guadeloupe with that of their island counterparts. A total of 720 voluntary 11- to 17-year-old students participated: 180 Asian Indians and 540 age- and sex-matched students of other origin. Weight and height were measured to calculate the BMI. Waist and hip circumferences and bicipital, tricipital, subscapular and supra-iliac skinfold thicknesses were assessed. The percentage of body fat was estimated by bioelectrical impedance analysis. Obesity was defined from BMI according to the International Obesity Task Force recommendations. Asian Indians were smaller and lighter than their counterparts. They had a higher body fat percentage even after adjustment on BMI but the prevalence of obesity did not differ, with an overall prevalence of 5·69 (95 % CI 5·67, 5·71) %. No principal effects of ethnicity on waist and hip circumferences or the waist:hip ratio were evidenced. The sum of the four skinfold thicknesses was the strongest predictor of body fat percentage, and the adjustment of overall body fat on subcutaneous fat cancelled the effect of ethnicity on this dependent variable. The present study found that Asian Indian adolescents from Guadeloupe had the same tendency toward higher body fat and body fat-for-BMI as previously documented in Asian Indian adults. It raises the hypothesis of a higher cardiovascular risk in this ethnic group from adolescence and questions the validity of using common BMI references for screening obesity in multiethnic communities.

Shofuku-fujin is an abnormal physical finding in Kampo medical practice. It is assumed to be often found in the elderly and contributes to the selection of Kampo formulas used mainly in elderly patients. However, few objective reports about Shofuku-fujin have been published to date. The aim of this study was to clarify the clinical features of patients showing Shofuku-fujin by using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and to objectively assess the potential clinical implications of these findings. We conducted a cross-sectional study of 1330 patients who visited our institute to undergo a medical examination by using data collected from September 2010 to March 2016. We extracted data on patient sex and age, anthropometric data, and body composition data that could potentially affect the appearance of Shofuku-fujin. Logistic regression analyses were performed by sex to analyze the various factors related to the appearance of Shofuku-fujin. Of the 1330 patients, the data of 386 men and 942 women were used for analysis. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that Shofuku-fujin was associated with older age (odds ratio (OR), 1.07; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.05–1.10; p  < 0.001), lower skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) (OR, 0.60; 95% CI, 0.43–0.85; p  = 0.004), and lower body fat percentage (OR, 0.89; 95% CI, 0.85–0.93; p  < 0.001) in men and older age (OR, 1.06; 95% CI, 1.04–1.07, p  < 0.001) and lower body fat percentage (OR, 0.94; 95% CI, 0.92–0.96; p  < 0.001) in women. On the basis of these results, the factors causing the appearance of Shofuku-fujin were aging, decreased muscle mass, and decreased body fat in men and aging and decreased body fat in women. Our results demonstrated that it may be better to consider a loss of muscle mass when examining a male patient with Shofuku-fujin.

Background: The prevalence of childhood obesity is increasing globally. This has severe implications for cardiometabolic risk including hypertension. South Asian children are particularly vulnerable given their unique phenotype which results in higher body fat at similar body mass index (BMI) levels compared to Europeans. As a result, we sought to explore the association between adiposity indicators and blood pressure, and to compare the strength of these indicators in determining hypertension in South Asian children and adolescents. Methods: Children ages 7-8 and 14-15 with South Asian origin were recruited from two Canadian cities. They were then assessed for height, weight and waist circumference (WC). Waist to height ratio (WHtR), and BMI were calculated. Body fat percentage was determined by bioelectrical impedance analysis. Blood pressure (BP) was assessed three times using an automated device. All variables (except body fat percentage) were transformed to z-scores using published standards. Unadjusted and adjusted (age, sex, household income, exposure to bullying or violence) logistic regression was used to explore associations between adiposity and hypertension. Subsequently, area under the curve (AUC) analysis was used to explore the strength of the adiposity metrics in determining hypertension. Results: This study consisted of 306 boys and 402 girls (n=762) with mean age 9.5 (S.D 3.2) years. Significant association were detected in unadjusted models between the adiposity indicators with systolic and diastolic hypertension (p<0.0001 for all). In the fully adjusted model, the association between adiposity with systolic and diastolic hypertension remained after adjusting for covariates (p<0.01 for all). BMI was the strongest predictor of systolic hypertension (AUC= 0.791), while body fat percentage was the strongest for diastolic hypertension (AUC= 0.712). The other indicators were within close ranges in their ability to predict both systolic and diastolic hypertension. Conclusion: Significant associations were observed between adiposity indicators and hypertension. Moreover, the adiposity indicators were observed to be strong predictors of hypertension in AUC analysis. This highlights the relationship between adiposity and hypertension, and suggests that BMI, WC, WHtR and body fat percentage are good indicators of hypertension in South Asian children.

Prior studies have investigated associations between body mass index (BMI) and foot structure; however, these studies are limited only to the evaluation of the longitudinal arch of the foot and do not evaluate associations with body composition. Therefore, this study examined associations between body fat percentage (BFP) and muscle mass percentage with foot structure in adolescents. This study was conducted with 158 healthy subjects aged from 11 to 13 years. Body fat percentage and muscle mass percentage were estimated using bioelectrical impedance analysis. A podoscope was used to calculate Clarke’s angle (CL), the Wejsflog index (WI), hallux valgus angle (ALPHA), and the angle of the varus deformity of the fifth toe (BETA). Lower values of CL were found in participants with excessive BFP (p = 0.021). No differences were observed in the values of the Wejsflog, ALFA or BETA indices between normal and excessive BFP groups. Participants with the lowest muscle mass percentage were significantly more likely to have lower values of CL and WI (p = 0.014 and p < 0.001, respectively). Excess BFP appeared to have a significant effect on the longitudinal arch and low muscle mass percentage on the longitudinal and transverse arches of the foot in adolescents. There was no association between fat and muscle content with positions of the big and fifth toes.

Background:Brisk walking is the most popular activity for obesity management for adults. We aimed to identify whether participant age, sex and body mass index (BMI) influenced the effectiveness of brisk walking.Methods:A search of 9 databases was conducted for randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Two investigators selected RCTs reporting on change in body weight, BMI, waist circumference, fat mass, fat-free mass, and body fat percentage following a brisk walking intervention in obese adults.Results:Of the 5072 studies screened, 22 met the eligibility criteria. The pooled mean differences were: weight loss, –2.13 kg; BMI, –0.96 kg/m2; waist circumference, –2.83 cm; fat mass, –2.59 kg; fat-free mass, 0.29 kg; and body fat percentage, –1.38%. Meta-regression of baseline BMI showed no effect on changes.Conclusions:Brisk walking can create a clinically significant reduction in body weight, BMI, waist circumference, and fat mass for obese men and women aged under 50 years. Obese women aged over 50 years can achieve modest losses, but gains in fat-free mass reduce overall change in body weight. Further research is required for men aged over 50 years and on the influence of BMI for all ages and sexes.

The aim of the presented study was to assess changes in body composition and intersexual differences among children at pre-pubertal and early-pubertal age. The research was designed as a non-randomized cross-section study. The screened sample consisted of 136 girls and 212 boys assigned into three groups according to their age. Body composition was measured using a direct segmental multi-frequency bioelectrical impedance analysis (DSM-BIA). To examine the association between obesity and selected health-related parameters, Kruskal-Wallis ANOVA and Eta2 were used. For evaluation of intersexual differences, Mann-Whitney U-test was used. The presented article is the part of VEGA 1/0840/17 project. From the perspective of age, neither in the group of girls nor boys we recorded any differences in indicators of body composition, namely in body fat mass index, body fat percentage and, in addition, in the group of girls in the waist to hip ratio parameter.
