AbstractThe migration and distribution of lubricant oil in a rolling bearing strongly affect the elastohydrodynamic lubrication performance between the balls and rings. However, oil re-lubrication is highly dependent on the bearing design, which is different from the ball-on-disc model. This study directly observed the distribution of the lubricant film in a custom-made model-bearing rig, with an outer ring replaced by a glass ring to allow full optical access. The influence of the cage type and surface properties were presented. The physical origin of the re-lubrication mechanism, including capillary flow and mechanical redistribution, was discussed.

For industrial roller or bush chains, the bush swings relative to the pin at working condition. If proper lubrication is maintained, an elastohydrodynamic lubrication contact is formed between the pin and the bush. In this study, a custom-made pin was used to replace the steel ball of a ball-disk test rig and optical interferometric experiments were carried out to study the effect of pin generatrix on the lubrication performance. The effects of generatrix shape, stroke length and oil supply condition on the lubrication state were explored. It is found that the change of the generatrix has an important influence on the oil film thickness, especially under rare oil supply condition.

Inhomogeneities in matrix may significantly affect the performance of mechanical elements, such as possible fatigue life reduction for rolling bearing due to stress concentration induced by inhomogeneities; on the other hand, most components operate under lubrication environment. So far the numerical algorithms to solve lubrication problems without the consideration of inhomogeneities or inclusions are well developed. In this paper, the combination of elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) and inclusion problem is realized to consider the effect of material inhomogeneity on the lubrication performance and subsurface stress distribution, etc. The matrix inhomogeneity will induce disturbed displacement, which will modify the film thickness and consequently result in the change of lubricated contact pressure distribution, etc. The matrix inhomogeneity is treated as the homogeneous inclusion with equivalent eigenstrain according to equivalent inclusion method (EIM), and the disturbed displacement is calculated by semi-analytical method (SAM). While the pressure and film thickness distributions are obtained by solving Reynolds equation. The iterative process is realized to consider the interaction between lubrication behavior and material response. The results show the inhomogeneity in contacting body will greatly influence the lubricated contact performance. The influences are different between compliant and stiff inhomogeneity. It is also found that different sizes and positions of inhomogeneity can significantly affect the contact characteristic parameters.

In order to investigate the influence of the body temperature of contacting solids on the lubrication performance of machine components, such as gears and roller bearings, a full numerical solution for the thermal elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) problem in circular contacts under steady state has been achieved. The analysis assumed that the body temperature is different from the temperature of the supplied lubricating oil. The effects of the body temperature, the slide-roll ratio, and the velocity parameter have been discussed. Results show that if the entrainment velocity is not very high, the solid body temperature plays a dominant role in the EHL behavior; however, the influence of the body temperature decreases as the entrainment velocity increases.

This article presents a thermal resistances-based approach for solving the thermal-elastohydrodynamic lubrication problem in point contact, taking the lubricant rheology into account. The friction coefficient in the contact is estimated, along with the distribution of both film thickness and temperature. A commercial tribometer is used in order to measure the friction coefficient at a ball-on-disc point contact lubricated with a polyalphaolefin base. These data and other experimental results available in the bibliography are compared to those obtained by using the proposed methodology, and thermal effects are analysed. The new approach shows good accuracy for predicting the friction coefficient and requires less computational cost than full thermal-elastohydrodynamic simulations.

This study presents experimental results on the effect of out-of-contact lubricant channeling on the tribological performance of nonconformal contacts under starved lubrication. Channeling of lubricant was carried out by adding a slider with a limited slot for scraping the displaced lubricant on one of mating surfaces (ball). Thus, the scraped lubricant is forced to flow back into the depleted track through the limited slot resulting in robust replenishment. The measurements have been conducted using optical tribometer (ball-on-disc) equipped with a digital camera and torque sensor. The effect of lubricant channeling was compared to the original contact condition by means of measuring friction and film thickness. The results show that the out-of-contact lubricant channeling leads to a significant enhancement of film thickness and friction reduction under starved conditions. Indeed, the starved elastohydrodynamic lubrication contacts transformed to the fully flooded regime after introducing the flow reconditioning. Moreover, the film thickness decay over time, which is common with starved elastohydrodynamic lubrication contacts, has not been observed in the case of lubricant channeling. However, the beneficial effect of lubricant channeling diminishes as the original contact condition tends to the fully flooded regime. The results of this study can be easily implemented in practical applications such as radial and thrust rolling-element bearings.

In this study, a modified mixed lubrication model is developed with consideration of machined surface roughness, arbitrary entraining velocity angle, starvation, and cavitation. Model validation is executed by means of comparison between the obtained numerical results and the available starved elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) data found from some previous studies. A comprehensive analysis for the effect of inlet oil supply condition on starvation and cavitation, mixed EHL characteristics, friction and flash temperature in elliptical contacts is conducted in a wide range of operating conditions. In addition, the influence of roughness orientation on film thickness and friction is discussed under different starved lubrication conditions. Obtained results reveal that inlet starvation leads to an obvious reduction of average film thickness and an increase in interasperity cavitation area due to surface roughness, which results in significant increment of asperity contacts, friction, and flash temperature. Besides, the effect of entrainment angle on film thickness will be weakened if the two surfaces operate under starved lubrication condition. Furthermore, the results show that the transverse roughness may yield thicker EHL films and lower friction than the isotropic and longitudinal if starvation is taken into account. Therefore, the starved mixed EHL model can be considered as a useful engineering tool for industrial applications.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to derive a new lubrication model of double involute gears drive and study the effect of the tooth waist order parameters of double involute gears on lubrication performance. Design/methodology/approach The new lubrication model of double involute gears drive was established according to the meshing characteristics of double involute gears drive and the finite length line contact elastohydrodynamic lubrication theory. Numerical calculation of the lubrication model of gear drive was conducted using the multigrid method. Findings The results show that the oil film necking phenomenon and the oil film pressure peak emerged at the tooth waist order area and the tooth profile ends, and when compared with involute gear, the lubrication performance at the tooth waist order area is better than that at the tooth profile ends. The effect of tooth waist order parameters on lubrication performance at the tooth waist order area was greater than that at other areas. Originality/value This research will promote the application of the double involute gear as soon as possible, and it has the reference value for other types of gears.
