The appearance of food provides certain expectations regarding the harmonization of taste, delicacy, and overall quality, which subsequently affects not only the intake itself but also many other features of the behavior of customers of catering facilities. The main goal of this article is to find out what effect the visual design of food (waffles) prepared from the same ingredients and served in three different ways—a stone plate, street food style, and a white classic plate—has on the consumer’s preferences. In addition to the classic tablet assistance personal interview (TAPI) tools, biometric methods such as eye tracking and face reading were used in order to obtain unconscious feedback. During testing, air quality in the room by means of the Extech device and the influence of the visual design of food on the perception of its smell were checked. At the end of the paper, we point out the importance of using classical feedback collection techniques (TAPI) and their extension in measuring subconscious reactions based on monitoring the eye movements and facial expressions of the respondents, which provides a whole new perspective on the perception of visual design and serving food as well as more effective targeting and use of corporate resources.

Recognizing facial expressions of emotions is a fundamental ability for adaptation to the social environment. To date, it remains unclear whether the spatial distribution of eye movements predicts accurate recognition or, on the contrary, confusion in the recognition of facial emotions. In the present study, we asked participants to recognize facial emotions while monitoring their gaze behavior using eye-tracking technology. In Experiment 1a, 40 participants (20 women) performed a classic facial emotion recognition task with a 5-choice procedure (anger, disgust, fear, happiness, sadness). In Experiment 1b, a second group of 40 participants (20 women) was exposed to the same materials and procedure except that they were instructed to say whether (i.e., Yes/No response) the face expressed a specific emotion (e.g., anger), with the five emotion categories tested in distinct blocks. In Experiment 2, two groups of 32 participants performed the same task as in Experiment 1a while exposed to partial facial expressions composed of actions units (AUs) present or absent in some parts of the face (top, middle, or bottom). The coding of the AUs produced by the models showed complex facial configurations for most emotional expressions, with several AUs in common. Eye-tracking data indicated that relevant facial actions were actively gazed at by the decoders during both accurate recognition and errors. False recognition was mainly associated with the additional visual exploration of less relevant facial actions in regions containing ambiguous AUs or AUs relevant to other emotional expressions. Finally, the recognition of facial emotions from partial expressions showed that no single facial actions were necessary to effectively communicate an emotional state. In contrast, the recognition of facial emotions relied on the integration of a complex set of facial cues.

This study is the first stage of a research program aimed at understanding differences in how people process 2D and 3D automotive stimuli, using psychophysiological tools such as galvanic skin response (GSR), eye tracking, electroencephalography (EEG), and facial expressions coding, along with respondent ratings. The current study uses just one measure, eye tracking, and one stimulus format, 2D realistic renderings of vehicles, to reveal where people expect to find information about brand and other industry-relevant topics, such as sportiness. The eye-gaze data showed differences in the percentage of fixation time that people spent on different views of cars while evaluating the “Brand” and the degree to which they looked “Sporty/Conservative”, “Calm/Exciting”, and “Basic/Luxurious”. The results of this work can give designers insights on where they can invest their design efforts when considering brand and styling cues.

In everyday life, faces with emotional expressions quickly attract attention and eye-movements. To study the neural mechanisms of such emotion-driven attention by means of event-related brain potentials (ERPs), tasks that employ covert shifts of attention are commonly used, in which participants need to inhibit natural eye-movements towards stimuli. It remains, however, unclear how shifts of attention to emotional faces with and without eye-movements differ from each other. The current preregistered study aimed to investigate neural differences between covert and overt emotion-driven attention. We combined eye-tracking with measurements of ERPs to compare shifts of attention to faces with happy, angry or neutral expressions when eye-movements were either executed (Go conditions) or withheld (No-go conditions). Happy and angry faces led to larger EPN amplitudes, shorter latencies of the P1 component and faster saccades, suggesting that emotional expressions significantly affected shifts of attention. Several ERPs (N170, EPN, LPC), were augmented in amplitude when attention was shifted with an eye-movement, indicating an enhanced neural processing of faces if eye-movements had to be executed together with a reallocation of attention. However, the modulation of ERPs by facial expressions did not differ between the Go and No-go conditions, suggesting that emotional content enhances both covert and overt shifts of attention. In summary, our results indicate that overt and covert attention shifts differ but are comparably affected by emotional content.

<p>Charles Darwin proposed in The Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex (1871) that traits which improve reproductive success, such as sexually attractive adornments, or weaponry that enhances fighting potential, have been selected for during the course of evolution. The field of evolutionary psychology has revitalized Darwin's hypotheses of sexual selection and human evolution through integrating the fields of anthropology, biology and psychology. In this thesis I investigate the potential for sexual selection to have acted upon sexual dimorphism in body composition and secondary sexual adornments in women and men. In women, body fat accumulation around the hips, buttocks and thighs can be measured using the waist-to-hip ratio (WHR). Female body fat and body weight are critical as energy reserves for gestation, pregnancy and lactation. Female body shape, body weight and breast morphology have been implicated in male judgments of female physical attractiveness. Men from New Zealand (NZ), China, Samoa and the highlands of Papua New Guinea (PNG) rated images of women with low WHRs as most attractive, independent of changes in body weight. In studies of male preferences for female breast morphology, married men from NZ, Samoa and PNG preferred large breasts whereas unmarried men preferred medium-sized breasts. Darkly- and medium-pigmented areolae were preferred in each culture, as were symmetrical breasts. However, male preferences for female areolar size varied considerably across these cultures. Eye-tracking techniques were used to measure attention to morphological traits as men made attractiveness judgments of female images that varied in WHR and breast morphology. In studies using full-length female images that varied in WHR and breast size, men look most often and for longer at the regions of female physique in which fat deposits are greatest (i.e. the breasts followed by the waist). However, attractiveness judgments were driven primarily by WHR rather than breast size. In eye-tracking studies using female torsos as stimuli, men looked most often and for longest at the breasts and areolae, irrespective of differences in breast size and areolar pigmentation. Men rated large and medium size breasts, and medium and darkly pigmented areolae as most attractive. These eye-tracking studies show a possible discordance in male visual attention for morphological traits that appear to drive attractiveness decisions. However, when men were shown full-length images of women posed in back-view as well as in front-view there were significant differences in their viewing patterns. Men spent more time looking at the midriff region of back-posed images than front-posed images and, irrespective of body-pose, rated images with low WHRs as most sexually attractive. Darwin suggested that the human male beard evolved via female choice as a highly attractive secondary sexual adornment. Other authors have proposed that the beard may augment aggressive displays and enhance perceptions of social dominance among males. To test these hypotheses I developed a new questionnaire that integrated facial expressions with the presence or absence of the beard. These questionnaires were administered in NZ and Samoa. The presence of a beard augmented male perceptions of aggressive facial expressions in Samoa and NZ. However, women in these cultures rated faces without beards as more attractive than bearded men. Men and women in both cultures rated bearded men as looking older and as having higher social status. The findings suggest that the beard plays a stronger role in intra-sexual competition rather than inter-sexual mate choice.</p>

Abstract Background Major depressive disorder has been associated with specific attentional biases in processing emotional facial expressions: heightened attention for negative and decreased attention for positive faces. However, using visual search paradigms, previous reaction-time-based research failed, in general, to find evidence for increased spatial attention toward negative facial expressions and reduced spatial attention toward positive facial expressions in depressed individuals. Eye-tracking analyses allow for a more detailed examination of visual search processes over time during the perception of multiple stimuli and can provide more specific insights into the attentional processing of multiple emotional stimuli. Methods Gaze behavior of 38 clinically depressed individuals and 38 gender matched healthy controls was compared in a face-in-the-crowd task. Pictures of happy, angry, and neutral facial expressions were utilized as target and distractor stimuli. Four distinct measures of eye gaze served as dependent variables: (a) latency to the target face, (b) number of distractor faces fixated prior to fixating the target, (c) mean fixation time per distractor face before fixating the target and (d) mean fixation time on the target. Results Depressed and healthy individuals did not differ in their manual response times. Our eye-tracking data revealed no differences between study groups in attention guidance to emotional target faces as well as in the duration of attention allocation to emotional distractor and target faces. However, depressed individuals fixated fewer distractor faces before fixating the target than controls, regardless of valence of expressions. Conclusions Depressed individuals seem to process angry and happy expressions in crowds of faces mainly in the same way as healthy individuals. Our data indicate no biased attention guidance to emotional targets and no biased processing of angry and happy distractors and targets in depression during visual search. Under conditions of clear task demand depressed individuals seem to be able to allocate and guide their attention in crowds of angry and happy faces as efficiently as healthy individuals.
