AbstractThe acuarioid nematode Echinuria skrjabiniensis Efimov in Skryabin, Sobolev et Ivashkin, 1965 was found in Calidris bairdii and C. fuscicollis (Aves, Scolopacidae) examined from several locations from Patagonia, Argentina. These constitute new host records as well as the first record of this parasite species in South America. Using both light and scanning electron microscopies, new morphological details are provided, including the description of the left spicule and the number and the arrangement of male caudal papillae. The taxonomic history of the species is summarized, corroborating its correct spelling and valid name.

AbstractThe utilization of sol-gel chemical methodology to prepare nanostructured energetic materials as well as the concepts of nanoenergetics is described. The preparation and characterization of two totally different compositions is detailed. In one example, nanostructured aerogel and xerogel composites of sol-gel iron (III) oxide and ultra fine grained aluminum (UFG Al) are prepared, characterized, and compared to a conventional micron-sized Fe2O3/Al thermite. The exquisite degree of mixing and intimate nanostructuring of this material is illustrated using transmission and scanning electron microscopies (TEM and SEM). The nanocomposite material has markedly different energy release (burn rate) and thermal properties compared to the conventional composite, results of which will be discussed. Small-scale safety characterization was performed on the nanostructured thermite. The second nanostructured energetic material consists of a nanostructured hydrocarbon resin fuel network with fine ammonium perchlorate (NH4ClO4) oxidizer present.

This paper describes the preparation and complementary characterization of a composite formed from the activation of titanium isopropoxide by phosphoric acid and deionized water (TiP).Techniques such as, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman , electronic (UV-vis) and Scanning electron microscopies (SEM) were used for characterization of this new composite formed. In the X-ray diffractogram of TIP was observed four intense peaks. A strong absorption was observed in the region 362-445 nm. The scanning electron microscopy of TiP, shows that the prepared material consists mostly of a cluster of spherical particles with diameters ranging from 2.35 to 2.60 μm.

Using several types of surface analysis (Optical profilometers (OP), Atomic Force Microscopies (AFM), Scanning Electron Microscopies (SEM) and cross-sectional high-resolution Transmission Electron Microscopies (TEM)) we analyze the surface morphologies of misoriented 4H silicon carbide after pre-growth hydrogen etching and homo-epitaxial growths. We observed the characteristic self-ordering of nano-facets on any analyzed surface. This nano-faceting, which should not be confused with step bunching, can be considered as a close-to-equilibrium instability, for this reason can be hindered.

A new di-block acrylate copolymer with a Copper-Phthalocyanine (CuPc) core has been synthesized via a multi-step reaction scheme involving the atom-transfer radical polymerization. This material displayed amphiphilic character and consists of a CuPc core with eight copolymer arms. This new amphiphilic material and related intermediates have been characterized by UV-Vis, FT-IR, 1H-NMR and elemental analysis. A preliminary study involving self-assembly properties of this material by optical, atomic force and scanning electron microscopies is presented.

Glandular trichomes play a major role in the morphological characterization of the Bignoniaceae. Due to their great diversity of forms and functions, this study aimed to inventory the glandular trichomes present in the aerial vegetative axis of Amphilophium magnoliifolium, Martinella obovata and Stizophyllum riparium, analyze their structure and register the participation of ants in these plants. Fresh samples from the nodal region, petiole and from medium to apical regions of the leaflet blade were fixed and processed according to usual methods in light and scanning electron microscopies. The glandular trichomes found were: peltate, capitate, stipitate, and patelliform/cupular. Peltate trichomes are the most abundant ones and present the most uniform distribution. Patelliform/cupular trichomes occur at specific regions, such as prophylls, leaflet blade and nodal regions. Martinella obovata is the only species that presents capitate and stipitate trichomes, which are widely distributed along the entire aerial vegetative axis. Ants were found in all species, mainly at nodal regions. The occurrence of the capitate-type trichome is reported for the first time to the genus.

Abstract In the present work, the pollen morphology of 22 species of Anacardiaceae was analysed, occurring in the state of Bahia, Brazil. The palynological material was obtained from specimens deposited in herbaria. The pollen grains were acetolysed, measured, illustrated and described under light and scanning electron microscopies. The quantitative data were statistically analysed according to sample size. The analysed species presented pollen grains in monads, small to medium sized, isopolar, amb circular to subtriangular, with shapes varying from oblate-spheroidal to prolate, 3-colporate, with fastigium in some species. The exine ornamentation was characterized as psilate, striate, microreticulate-striate, striato-perforate, suprastriato-infra(micro)reticulate. The pollen morphology variation confirms the eurypalynous character of the family. The attributes of the apertures and exine may collaborate in the taxonomic circumscription and provide a clarification of the phylogenetic relationships of the group.
