Abstract During vehicle braking and cornering, the tire's footprint region may see high normal contact pressures and in-plane shear stresses. The corresponding resultant forces and moments are transferred to the wheel. The optimal design of the tire bead area and the wheel requires a detailed knowledge of the contact pressure and shear stress distributions at the tire/rim interface. In this study, the forces and moments obtained from the simulation of a vehicle in stationary braking/cornering conditions are applied to a quasi-static braking/cornering tire finite element model. Detailed contact pressure and shear stress distributions at the tire/rim interface are computed for heavy braking and cornering maneuvers.

In this work, a preliminary numerical simulation of the lower urinary system using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is performed. Very few studies have been done on the simulation of three-dimensional urine through the lower urinary system. In this study, a simplified lower urinary model with rigid body assumption is proposed. The distributions of urine flow velocity, wall pressure and shear stress along the urethra are simulated based on MRI scanned uroflowmetry of a normal female. Numerical results show that violent secondary flows appear on the cross surface near the end of the urethra when the inflow rate is increased. The oscillative variation of pressure and shear stress distributions are found around the beginning section of the urethra when flow rate is at the peak value.

An air-tunnel study of the establishment of the wake behind a disk at a Reynolds number of approximately 7 × 104 was undertaken. On the basis of the measured data, such a wake is fully established, that is, similarity profiles of the flow characteristics are formed, within 15 diameters of the disk, and approximately 95 percent of the transfer of energy from the mean motion to the turbulence motion takes place within 3 diameters of the disk, in the region of the mean standing eddy. The measured mean ambient-pressure and mean total-pressure distributions, mean velocity distributions, turbulence-intensity and shear-stress distributions, and the mean streamline pattern are presented in graphical form, as are the quantitative balances of the integrated momentum and mean-energy relationships. A stream function consisting of a continuous distribution of doublets is introduced to extend the radial limit of understanding of the flow characteristics to a very large if not infinite radius. Considerable attention is given to the problem of obtaining and interpreting turbulence shear-stress data immediately downstream from the point of flow separation. The applicability of a local diffusion coefficient or virtual viscosity of the Boussinesq or Prandtl type for relating the turbulence shear stress to the radial gradient of mean axial velocity is discussed. The Bernoulli sum and the energy changes along individual streamlines investigated in an associated study are incorporated herein to obtain a quantitative estimate of the local errors involved in the turbulence-shear-stress measurements.

A numerical simulation is performed to study the velocity, streamlines, vorticity and shear stress distributions in viscous water waves with different wave steepness in intermediate and deep water depth when the average wind velocity is zero. The numerical results present evidence of ‘clockwise’ and ‘anticlockwise’ rotation of the fluid at the trough and crest of the water waves. These results show thicker vorticity layers near the surface of water wave than that predicted by the theories of inviscid rotational flow and the low Reynolds number viscous flow. Moreover, the magnitude of vorticity near the free surface is much larger than that predicted by these theories. The analysis of the shear stress under water waves show a thick shear layer near the water surface where large shear stress exists. Negative and positive shear stresses are observed near the surface below the crest and trough of the waves, while the maximum positive shear stress is inside the water and below the crest of the water wave. Comparison of wave energy decay rate in intermediate depth and deep water waves with laboratory and theoretical results are also presented.

The internal stress distribution in elastohydrodynamic lubrication of rolling/sliding line contact was obtained. The technique involves the full EHD solution and the use of Lagrangian quadrature to obtain the internal stress distributions in the x, y, z-directions and the shear stress distribution as a function of the normal pressure and the friction force. The principal stresses and the maximum shear stress were calculated for dimensionless loads ranging from (2.0452 × 10−5) to (1.3 × 10−4) and dimensionless velocity of 10−10 to 10−11 for slip ratios ranging from 0 to pure sliding condition.
