Snow-ice deposits formed on the outer surfaces of aircrafts on the ground during parking can have a negative impact during take-off due to the deterioration of aerodynamic and flight performance, a significant and even critical decrease in lift, increased drag, blocking controls, difficulty or blocking of landing gear retraction, damage to the blades of inlet guide vanes and/or the blades of an engine compressor. To exclude the influence of snow and ice deposits, anti-icing treatment is performed, including their removal and/or protection from subsequent formation. For this purpose, special anti-icing machines (deicers), equipped with such means of instrumental control as counters of anti-icing fluid pumps, measuring scales of anti-icing fluid tanks, thermometers and pressure gauges for temperature and pressure measuring at the outlet of a spray nozzle, are used. The article deals with the metrological aspects of civil aircrafts anti-icing prior to flight.

Neurodegenerative Diseases (ND) are a major threat to the aging population and the lack of a single preventive or disease-modifying agent only serves to increase their impact. In the past few years, protein misfolding and the subsequent formation of neurotoxic oligomeric/aggregated protein species have emerged as a unifying theme underlying the pathology of these complex diseases. Recently developed microbial genetic screens and selection systems for monitoring ND-associated protein misfolding have allowed the establishment of highthroughput assays for the identification of cellular factors and processes that are important mediators of NDassociated proteotoxicities. In addition, such systems have facilitated the discovery of synthetic and natural compounds with the ability to rescue the misfolding and the associated pathogenic effects of aggregation-prone proteins associated with NDs. This review outlines such available systems in bacteria and yeast, whose usage will likely accelerate the pre-clinical discovery process for effective drugs against a variety of NDs with high socioeconomic impact.

“Red mud” or “bauxite residue” is a highly alkaline waste generated from alumina refinery with a pH of 10.5–12.5 which poses serious environmental problems. Neutralization or its treatment by sintering in presence of additives is one of the methods for overcoming the caustic problem as it fixes nearly all the leachable free caustic soda present in red mud. In the present study, feasibility of reducing the alkaline nature of red mud by sintering using fly ash as an additive via Taguchi methodology and its use for brick production, as an alternative to clay, is investigated. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) shows that sintering temperature is the most significant parameter in the process. A pH of 8.9 was obtained at 25–50% of red mud and 50–75% fly ash with water and temperature of . Alternatively 50% of red mud can be mixed with 50% of fly ash with water at temperature of to get a pH of about 8.4. The mechanism of this process has been explained with also emphasis on chemical, mineralogical, and morphological analysis of the sintered red mud. The results would be extremely useful in utilization of red mud in building and construction industry.

The formation of cork in vertical strips on young branches of Ceratoniasiliqua L. is described. The cork strips represent an early stage in the development of peripheral periderm. Initiation of the cork ridges began with the differentiation of lenticels in vertical rows and further development occurred through the subsequent formation of periderm, primarily in the longitudinal direction. A circumfluent covering of periderm was formed eventually by lateral extension of phellogen leading to the gradual coalescence of the cork strips. Similarities with patterns of cork wing development are discussed.
