Effects of titanium dioxide nano-particles on growth and some histological parameters of zebrafish (Danio rerio) after a long-term exposure

AbstractThis work shows that the titanium dioxide coatings obtained by low-pressure cold gas spraying with the use of the sol–gel amorphous TiO2 powder are characterized by photocatalytic activity despite their partial amorphous content. Moreover, the research outcome suggests that the decomposition rate of organic pollutants is enhanced after long-term exposure to moisture. The condensation humidity test is not detrimental to the continuity and integrity of the coating, but the phase composition of coatings changes—with the exposure to water vapor, the portion of the amorphous phase crystallizes into brookite. The mechanism responsible for the conversion of amorphous TiO2 into brookite is attributed to the water-driven dissolution and reprecipitation of TiO6 octahedra. It has been shown that an additional parameter necessary for the stabilization of the brookite is the oxygen depletion of the amorphous structure of titanium dioxide. Considering the results presented in this paper and the advantages of a portable, low-pressure cold spray system for industrial applications, it is expected that TiO2 coatings produced from a sol–gel feedstock powder can be further developed and tested as efficient photocatalysts.

The aim of this study was to investigate the long-term effects of subchronic exposure to sublethal levels of nitrite, ranging from 15 to 130 mg l-1 NO2-, on growth in aquarium fish Danio rerio. The juvenile growth test according to OECD 215 was used in the experiments. Fish weight was measured at the beginning of the experiment and then using the same method, fish weight was observed 28 days after fish stocking. Compared to the control, growth suppression was detected from the concentration of 73 mg l-1 NO2- (P < 0.05) and a significant inhibition of fish body growth was shown from 130 mg l-1 NO2- (P < 0.01). An exponential relationship between nitrite concentrations and specific growth rate (R2 = 0.896) was detected.

In this present investigation titanium dioxide (TiO2) nano-fluid was blended with aphanizomenon flos (AF) biodiesel (20%)-diesel (80%) blend. Different percentages of TiO2 such as 5%, 10%, and 15%, was added with AF-D (aphanizomenon flos-diesel) blends. The blends are named as AFD-5TiO2, AFD-10TiO2, and AFD-15TiO2. The performance and emission parameters of a single cylinder CI engine fueled with AFD-TiO2 blends were experimentally investigated. The results reveal that, with the use of TiO2 nano particles, AFD-10TiO2 blend gave optimum results. BSFC decreased by about 5% and BTE increased by about 2% with the addition of TiO2 nano-particle as a catalyst. The tailpipe emissions such as CO, HC, smoke reduced drastically, but the NO emission increased, with the use of TiO2 nano-particles.

Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2NP) have gained interest in the dental field because of their multiple uses in addition to their antimicrobial effect. One of the applications in dentistry involves the incorporation into poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) resin. However, there is a lack of evidence on their effects on the behavior of the resulting nanocomposite. Therefore, the present review aims to screen literatures for data related to PMMA/TiO2nanocomposite to figure out the properties of TiO2nanoparticles, methods of addition, interaction with PMMA resin matrix, and finally the addition effects on the properties of introduced nanocomposite and evidence on its clinical performance. Regardless of the latest research progress of PMMA/TiO2nanocomposite, the questionable properties of final nanocomposite and the lack of long-term clinical evidence addressing their performance restrict their wide clinical use. A conclusive connection between nanoparticle size or addition method and nanocomposite properties could not be established.
