Plasma and brain angiotensin concentrations associated with water response behavior in the desert anuran, Scaphiopus couchii under natural conditions in the field

SUMMARYPopulations of Pseudodiplorchis americanus infecting the desert toad, Scaphiopus couchii, have previously been shown to be remarkably stable from year to year, despite wide variation in conditions promoting invasion. The present study aimed to document the survival of both first-year and pre-existing adults under controlled laboratory temperatures. First-year worm survival in experimentally infected toads was shown to be very high for the first 5 months after migration to the definitive site, and there was no difference in survival at 25 °C or 15–20 °C. There was also no density-dependent survival during the same period: 20% of worms were recovered from the host urinary bladder, irrespective of initial intensities. After the first 5 months, there was a progressive loss of worms in toads maintained at 25 °C but not at 15–20 °C. Pre-existing adult populations were shown to be virtually identical to those under natural conditions for the first 4 months after toad capture. Following this, at 25 °C, populations declined and no pre-existing adults were recovered after 11–14 months. There was no such loss of pre-existing adults at 15–20 °C for up to 14 months. A diurnal temperature cycle of 20–34 °C (simulating temperatures during the desert summer) did not lead to a significant loss of worms. These observations suggest that during one annual cycle in the desert, when temperatures remain above 20 °C for less than 6 months, most adult worms established in the host urinary bladder will survive to the next transmission opportunity. However, the similar longevity of first-year and pre-existing adults in laboratory maintained toads shows that loss of worms cannot be due solely to parasite ageing. Temperature-dependent survival of P. americanus is suggestive of a host immune response. Low temperatures, which inhibit parasite growth and development, are essential for the survival of P. americanus.

To examine whether starting a response scale with the positive or the negative categories affects response behavior, a split-ballot design using reverse forms of an 8-point scale assessing the subjective importance of job characteristics was used. Response behavior varied according to the scale format employed. Responses were more positive on the scale starting with the category “very important” (split 2). By contrast, the scale starting with the category “not at all important” (split 1) did not elicit more negative responses, but rather less positive ones. However, differences in response behavior did not systematically reflect the direction of the respective scales. Starting with the differences between the two split versions, the factorial structure of indicators assessing two dimensions of job motivation was tested for each scale type separately and then for both scale types simultaneously. Finally, models placing increasingly severe equality constraints on both scale types were tested. The paper concludes with a discussion of the results and desiderata for further research.

If the center pivot or linear moving irrigation machines are operated with their own individual irrigation technologies, but the irrigation machines with combined center-pivot and linear moving mode are operated on one field in turn as a center pivot and as a linear. The goal of this work is creation of theoretical base for calculation of improved irrigation machines parameters and existing irrigation equipment modernizing, according to the different natural conditions. The research object is investigation of characteristics of rain delivered from irrigation machines with combined center-pivot and linear moving mode, assuring uniform irrigation distribution according to the irrigation technology and operation parameters, size and configuration of seasonal norm as well as to the irrigation scheduling. The pointed goal is achieved by the given problem solving, when having basic data on the irrigation norm and time, as well as operation characteristics and the irrigation area configuration, the predicted hydro modulus are calculated for the irrigation machine working in a center pivot and in a linear mode. The simulation of sprinkling devices operation on the machine is made by one universal formula, when on the plots irrigated in center pivot and linear mode is achieved equality of arranged hydro modulus to the corresponding calculated data. At that, are considered all the possible combinations of the total irrigated area parts, irrigated with different technologies.
