Carbon nanotube (CNT) is a new type of nanoscale materials, which has excellent adsorption and mechanical properties. In this paper, carbon nanotubes were added in the regenerated silk fibroin solution to get CNTs/silk fibroin composite fiber, which had more excellent mechanical property than the regenerated fibroin fiber. The results indicate that the optimum preparation conditions are summed up as follows: silk fibroin concentration 35%, spinning temperature 40oC, carbon nanotube mass fraction 1.0% and the longest storage time less than 7 days. The mechanical property of regenerated fibroin fiber which added with carbon nanotubes is obviously improved.

Mg-RE-B alloy with minuteness particle structure (MPS) were prepared by ingot metallurgy including as-cast and hot-extruded processing, and the microstructure and mechanical property of Mg-6RE-3B2O3 (wt%) alloys were investigated before and after hot-extruded. The Mg-RE-B alloy has satisfied grain size and particle structure, went with excellent mechanical property of tensile yield strength of 520 MPa and elongation of 5% at room temperature. The MPS Mg-RE-B alloy is a promising candidate among lightweight structural materials

With good biocompatibility, collagen is often used in cartilage tissue engineering. Collagen/alginate composite was hoped to improve the poor mechanical property of pure collagen but the biocompatibity was decreased. In this study, hydroxyapatite (HA) particles were used to get collagen/alginate/HA (CAHA) composite film to enhance the bioactivity properties. The bioactivity of the composite was investigated by in vitro co-culture with chondrocytes. During the 6-day cell culture in vitro, the composite showed a significant improvement in promoting proliferation and maintaining morphology/phenotype of the chondrocytes over collagen/alginate composite by MTT, SEM, fluorescent and immunohistochemical assays. Cytocompatibility and cytoviablility of CAHA even come up to that of collagen film alone. The results indicated that the composite film may provide an appropriate environment for the proliferation and maintaining the morphology and phenotype of chondrocytes and have a potential clinical application in the cartilage tissue engineering field.

Silk sericin (SS) is a type of natural macromolecular protein with excellent hydrophilicity, biocompatibility and biodegradability, but also has very poor mechanical properties. To develop sericin-based wound dressings, we utilized polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to reinforce the mechanical property of sericin by blending PVA and sericin, then modified zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) on SS/PVA film with the assistance of polydopamine (PDA) to endow SS/PVA film with antibacterial activity. Scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray powder diffraction demonstrated ZnO NPs were well grafted on PDA-SS/PVA film. Fourier transform infrared spectra suggested PDA coating and ZnONPs modification did not alter the structure of sericin and PVA. Water contact angle and swelling tests indicated the excellent hydrophilicity and swellability of ZnO NPs-PDA-SS/PVA composite film. Mass loss analysis showed ZnO NPs-PDA-SS/PVA film had excellent stability. The mechanical performance test suggested the improved tensile strength and elongation at break could meet the requirement of ZnO NPs-PDA-SS/PVA film in biomaterial applications. The antibacterial assay suggested the prepared ZnO NPs-PDA-SS/PVA composite film had a degree of antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The excellent hydrophilicity, swellability, stability, mechanical property and antibacterial activity greatly promote the possibility of ZnO NPs-PDA-SS/PVA composite film in antibacterial biomaterials application.
