Territorial analysis is related to the complexity of an area where human activities and environmental characteristics are the main development factors. Human activities have a direct (e.g. farm activities) and indirect (e.g. urban development/sprawl) influence on a territory and its environment, which gives an important function to such activities when strategies for territorial planning have to be defined. Several actors are involved in the assessment of a territory, which is a complicated feature of decision making to be achieved with the use of complex data-analysis process. The evolution of personal computer and specific software for the analysis of spatial data is giving important contribution to “Territorial Planning Strategies.” Spatial Decision Support System is an example of how problems occurred during a decision making process can be solved using methodologies that combine “Multicriteria Approach” and “Geographic Information System.” One of these methodologies is represented by “Spatial Multicriteria Decision Analysis.”

From “natural dynamics” to “uses and conflicts”: a reflection on the epistemologic evolution of the “coastal” Abstract This article discusses the pertinence of a specific line of research about the uses of and conflicts in coastal environments, since research lines dealing with traditional urban and rural cuts could have the necessary potential to accomplish interdisciplinary research about coastal areas. Academic reasons for the creation of the line, as well as arguments in favor of its specificity as a territorial analysis cut, are presented here. The complexity and the “novelty” of some coastal area phenomena, as scientific objects, don’t allow us to see them as particular cases of the conventional urban and rural issue. Based on examples taken from a round table on the theme, conflict is championed as a category capable of organizing coastal interdisciplinary research. The research about conflicts invokes all the natural and social dynamics necessary for its equation, with the advantage of allowing for more direct application of discoveries to the management process.

A territorial analysis of Aedes aegypti density was conducted in two Colombian cities using an ecosystem and chorematic approach. Entomological and behavioral data (by cluster) and information on the urban context were used to analyze the relationship between territorial structures and dynamics and vector density. The results were represented in graphic (chorematic) models. Arauca showed higher vector density than Armenia. Higher density was related to unplanned urbanization, flood-prone areas, low socioeconomic strata, household water tanks, higher temperature, and recall of control measures for adult mosquitos. Zones with low density indices coincided with diverse socioeconomic, ecological, and behavioral conditions. The study found a relationship between territorial structures and dynamics and vector density in both Arauca and Armenia, where the interaction between ecological and social systems shape areas with high and low A. aegypti density.

[full article is in Spanish]EnglishThis article seeks to contribute to the understanding of polycentric systems in socio-territorial contexts, and its link with modern governance, in which multiple social actors interact at different scales and levels. The concept of polycentrism, its dimensions, predominant approaches and assumptions on which its use is based in the socio-territorial analysis is discussed. The text highlights two of the most influential approaches in the theoretical–methodological development of polycentric systems: the European, key in territorial and regional development; and the American, focused on the analysis of institutional development and socio-ecosystem governance. Assumptions of the polycentric systems are highlighted in order to solve integrally socio-territorial problems from multilevel, multiscale and multiactor interactions. Finally, its relation with modern governance is analyzed and it is concluded that it is important to continue the study of polycentric systems.
