Impact of emotional intelligence on level of academic achievement in a sample of Saudi female medical student

BackgroundEmotional intelligence (EI) assessment has become an effective technique in exploring individual competencies. In the medical educational, there is a growing evidence for relation between academic achievement and emotional intelligence.ObjectiveTo examine relation between academic achievement and emotional intelligence among medical students.MethodA cross-sectional study of 189 female university students using paper-based Bar-On Emotional Quotient Inventory: Youth Version was conducted. BarOn EQ-i:YV consists of 7 sub-scores which estimate various domains of emotional intelligence along with general mood. The academic achievement was assessed via self-reported Grade Point Average (GPA).ResultThe average Intrapersonal score of participating students was 14.9 ± 3.4 and Interpersonal was 41.7 ± 4.9. The students scored 32.0 ± 5.0 in stress management scale and 31.9 ± 4 in adaptability. The lowest score achieved in the Emotional Inelegance scale was 32.5 whereas the top score was 71.3. The average general mood was 47.1 ± 6.4 and the positive impression ranged between 6 and 23 (17.3 ± 2.8). Positive week correlations were defined between the GPA and self-efficacy (r = 0.13) and Adaptability (r = 0.08) though these correlations were statistically insignificant (P > 0.05). Linear regression model showed that domains of Bar-On scale could explain up to 33% of changes in GPA (R2 = 0.33) with significant effect of self-efficacy, adaptability and general mood scores (P < 0.05).ConclusionMedical students showed high level of emotional intelligence which positively affect their academic achievement. Introduction: Recent studies in last few decades are revealing that Intelligence Quotient (IQ) alone is not a reliable factor of students’ academic achievement. It has been claimed that only 20% of a person’s success can be attributed to IQ and rest 80% to Emotional Quotient. Since, many researchers had claimed the influence of emotional intelligence on academic performance; the aims of this study were to find out the level of emotional intelligence and its relation with academic performance among Nepali undergraduate students. Methods: A cross sectional study was carried out in 280 medical students (120 male, 160 female). The data of this research was obtained through the use of a questionnaire which elicits information about their Emotional Intelligence level and academic performance. The obtained data was analyzed by SPSS. The degree of relationship between marks obtained and emotional intelligence were established by Correlation coefficient and Fischer exact test. The level of significance was set at p-value less than 0.05. Results: The mean level of emotional intelligence was high (5.055±0.798) among Nepalese medical students. The respondents were reported to have high level of emotional intelligence with (5.544±0.929) for Self- awareness, (5.035±1.01) for Social awareness, (5.394±1.11) for Social skill and moderate level of emotional intelligence (4.24±1.37) for Self-management. Conclusion: There was a positive and strong relationship between the respondents’ overall emotional intelligence and their academic achievement which means that the higher their level of emotional intelligence, the better they perform academically.

Abstract Objectives The purpose of this study was to explore the domains of emotional intelligence among medical students and ascertain its relationship to academic achievement. Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 2340 undergraduate medical students from different Egyptian and Saudi Arabian universities using a semi-structured online abstract including two parts: Socio-demographic data and emotional intelligence questionnaire. Results The study was conducted on 2340 medical students aged (21.5 ± 1.9, range = 17–24 years) from two countries, Saudi Arabia (28.8%) and Egypt (71.2%). Females represented 68.4%. Academic achievement was distributed as excellent 54.1%, very good (28%), good (14.5%) and accepted (3.4%). The total EI score reported that 63.9% of the students had strength while 35.9% needed attention. Managing emotion, motivating oneself and total EI score were significantly higher among Egyptian students in comparison to Saudi Arabia students (P < 0.001). Females showed significantly higher EI scores than males. Egyptian males showed significantly higher EI scores than Saudi Arabian males (P < 0.001). Self-awareness was significantly high in Saudi Arabian females while managing emotions was significantly high among Egyptian females (P < 0.01). Academic achievement showed that EI scores were significantly higher among very good and excellent achievement in comparison to good or accepted achievement except self-awareness which showed that those with accepted achievement had higher self-awareness than those with high achievement. Significant positive correlation was found between EI scores and academic achievement (P < 0.001) Conclusion Emotional intelligence domains relate significantly to academic achievements in medical students. Therefore, this study recommended the necessity of improving the students ‘emotional intelligence in the scientific and community environment with proper interventions strategies through developing program that enhances their academic achievement to play a pivotal role when transforming into business world and recently in academic study.

Objective: Performing basic life support (BLS) in patients with cardiopulmonary arrest decreases mortality and morbidity. In addition, BLS knowledge is a prerequisite for medical graduation. The present study was conducted to determine the awareness level of undergraduate medical students in Jordan regarding BLS and background knowledge. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted between 17 April 2021 and 12 May 2021. A validated questionnaire was used as an online Google form and was posted in all medical student groups and Jordanian universities through various social medias. We categorized level of awareness into two groups: adequate awareness for those who got 60% or more, and inadequate awareness for those who got less than 60% in BLS test. Chi-square test was used to compare different variables. Results: A total of 886 students with a mean age of 21.5 (± 2.2) years completed the survey, including 552 females (62.3%). Among participated students, only 281 (31.7%) had adequate awareness, whereas 605 (68.3%) had inadequate awareness, with a mean score of 10 (± 3.8) out of 20. Surprisingly, there was no statistically significant correlation (P=0.210) between grade point average (GPA) and awareness level among participated students. On the contrary, we detected statistically significant relationships (P<0.001) between various variables and awareness level. Conclusion: Overall, we found that awareness of BLS among medical students in Jordan is not adequate. We can improve the awareness of medical students in this regard through obligating them to educate the general population, especially school students, as a volunteer campaign.

Objective: To determine the level of and factors associated with empathy among medical students.Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study surveyed all first- to sixth-year medical students at the Facultyof Medicines, Prince of Songkla University, at the end of the 2020 academic year. The questionnaires consisted of:1) The personal and demographic information questionnaire, 2) The Toronto Empathy Questionnaire, and 3) ThaiMental Health Indicator-15. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and factors associated with empathylevel were assessed via chi-square and logistic regression analyses.Results: There were 1010 participants with response rate of 94%. Most of them were female (59%). More than half(54.9%) reported a high level of empathy. There was a statistically significant difference in empathy levels betweenpre-clinical and clinical medical students; in regards to empathy subgroups (P-value < 0.001). The assessment ofemotional states in others by demonstrating appropriate sensitivity behavior, altruism, and empathic respondingscores among the pre-clinical group were higher than those of the clinical group. Multivariate analysis indicatedthat female gender, pre-clinical training level, and minor specialty preference were factors associated with empathylevel. The protective factor that significantly improved the level of empathy was having fair to good mental health.Conclusion: More than half of the surveyed medical students reported a high level of empathy. The protective factorthat improved the level of empathy was good mental health. However, future qualitative methods, longitudinalsurveillance, or long-term follow-up designs are required to ensure the trustworthiness of these findings.

Introduction: Student can be stressed due to different stressors such as academic, financial, health related or loss of close family member or friend, etc. Stress is the bodies’ reaction both neurologically and physiologically to adapt to the new condition. Stress has a negative effect on the academic performance of the students. This study was aimed to explore the stress and stressors and also to determine the association between stress levels and the academic performances in terms of cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of undergraduate medical students. Methods: It was a cross-sectional study conducted among all 234 year-4 medical students of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), session 2011-2012. Sample size comprised of 179 students after fulfilling all inclusion and exclusion criteria. A validated Medical Students’ Stressor Questionnaire (MSSQ) was used to collect the data. Stress level and its association with CGPA of semester-1 examination were analysed. Results: Response rate was 76.49%, where 72% were female and 69% resided in the hostel. Academic Related and Social-related Stressors caused for severe and high stress in 84% and 49% respondents respectively, with insignificant differences between gender and residency. Respondents with a high and severe stress level were observed to have higher CGPA. Conclusion: UKM medical students are highly resourceful to manage their stress well and thus denying the negative effect of stress towards their academic performance. Medical schools should train students exposing various personal and professional developmental activities that able to face the everyday challenges and manage stress well and thereby achieve better academic performance.

Numerous studies have investigated the impact of self-esteem and intelligence on academic achievement. The findings are generally inconsistent. The aim of this study was to understand the relationship between intelligence, self-esteem and academic achievement among young people in Kosovo. It was a quantitative cross-sectional study. The sample consisted of 1856 participants, aged 10-18 years old (Mage = 15.29, SD = 1.76). Participants completed the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and The Raven Standard Progressive Matrices. Grade Point Average (GPA) was used to measure academic achievement. Data processing was done with SPSS 21.0 and Microsoft Excel 2013. Participants according to self-reported academic achievement were classified as follows: fail (0.1%), sufficient (2%), good (15.6%), very good (26.7%) and excellent (55.7%). As regards self-esteem participants were classified as follows: low self-esteem (26.9%), and normal self-esteem (73.1%). A significant positive correlation was found between academic achievement and intelligence (r = .31; p = .00) but not between achievement and self-esteem. This significant correlation resulted for both genders separately. The Mann-Whitney test found significant differences in academic achievement between genders and between groups with high intelligence and those with normal intelligence. Intelligence, but not self-esteem revealed a significant relationship with academic achievement. Future studies on the topic might focus on explanatory factors or the possibility of interaction of other variables related to academic achievement.

Objective: To find out the correlation between internet addiction and depression, anxiety and stress among undergraduate medical students in Azad Kashmir. Methods: A cross-sectional study including 210 undergraduate medical students (first to the fifth year) was done in Poonch Medical College, Azad Kashmir. The data collection tools were DASS21 questionnaire and Young’s internet addiction questionnaire. Spearman rank correlation test was done to see the correlation between internet addiction and depression, anxiety, and stress. Data were analyzed by SPSS v23 at a 95% confidence interval. Results: A very high prevalence (52.4%) of moderate to extremely severe internet addiction was observed among the respondents. The mild positive correlation between internet addiction and depression was identified (p <0.001) and similar type of correlation was observed between internet addiction and stress (p 0.003). However, anxiety and internet addiction were not significantly correlated. The prevalence of anxiety and depression among the males were higher than the females, whilst the stress level was almost the same across gender. Conclusion: Internet addiction has been found to be associated with various psychiatric diseases. In this study, we also observed such correlation. We have also observed a very high level of internet addiction among medical students. The prevalence of internet addiction may further increase in the coming years as the internet will become more cheap, available and include more high quality psychologically addictive contents. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the physical activity level in medical students of Ziauddin university in Karachi. MATERIALS AND METHODS This is a cross-sectional study. The data analysis included total 300 medical students, 60 students from each of Ziauddin College of Physical Therapy, Ziauddin College of Medicine, Ziauddin College of Nursing, Ziauddin College of Dentistry and Ziauddin College of Pharmacy of the Ziauddin University, Karachi. International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) was used to evaluate physical activity level of the students. RESULT Physical therapy students achieved the highest level of physical activity, with 33% performing high level of physical activity compared to medicine (18%), pharmacy (12%), dentistry (28%) and nursing (28%). CONCLUSION Medical students found satisfactory results of physical activity level. But the majority of students did not meet the recommended criteria of physical activity. Therefore medical students improve their own habits because they are well trained and qualified to promote healthy habits.

Abstract Background To become a doctor with a high level of professionalism and ethical standards, it is important to have and maintain a high level of motivation from the time of admission to medical school. However, no studies in Japan have quantitatively investigated the factors related to motivation immediately after enrollment. In this study, we identified the background factors that influence the motivation of medical students immediately after admission. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted. First-year medical students answered our questionnaire three weeks after admission. The questionnaire comprised 16 demographic items, and the 28-item Academic Motivation Scale was used to quantify motivation. Results Our analysis showed that amotivation, representing low self-determinant motivation, was significantly higher in students whose parents were medical professionals and in students who did not talk about their problems than in those whose parents were not medical professionals and those who did talk about their problems, respectively. Intrinsic motivation, which indicates the level of self-determinant motivation, was significantly lower in students who belonged to a sports club. Conclusions No previous studies have suggested that having parents who are medical professionals might be a factor associated with their children’s decreased motivation when entering medical school in Japan. However, further research is needed to analyze this relationship.
