INTELLIGENCE, SELF-ESTEEM AND ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT IN KOSOVO YOUTH

Numerous studies have investigated the impact of self-esteem and intelligence on academic achievement. The findings are generally inconsistent. The aim of this study was to understand the relationship between intelligence, self-esteem and academic achievement among young people in Kosovo. It was a quantitative cross-sectional study. The sample consisted of 1856 participants, aged 10-18 years old (Mage = 15.29, SD = 1.76). Participants completed the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and The Raven Standard Progressive Matrices. Grade Point Average (GPA) was used to measure academic achievement. Data processing was done with SPSS 21.0 and Microsoft Excel 2013. Participants according to self-reported academic achievement were classified as follows: fail (0.1%), sufficient (2%), good (15.6%), very good (26.7%) and excellent (55.7%). As regards self-esteem participants were classified as follows: low self-esteem (26.9%), and normal self-esteem (73.1%). A significant positive correlation was found between academic achievement and intelligence (r = .31; p = .00) but not between achievement and self-esteem. This significant correlation resulted for both genders separately. The Mann-Whitney test found significant differences in academic achievement between genders and between groups with high intelligence and those with normal intelligence. Intelligence, but not self-esteem revealed a significant relationship with academic achievement. Future studies on the topic might focus on explanatory factors or the possibility of interaction of other variables related to academic achievement.

Abstract BackgroundSpirituality in nurses is considered an important aspect of nursing care today. Often, the palliative care ward environment teaches nurses the philosophies of life of dying patients but can leave them feeling powerless from the impact of facing death, which can place them in a state of crisis. However, there are no existing studies that have examined the relationship between the factors of spirituality and self-esteem in nurses working in palliative care wards. This study thus aimed to investigate the relationship between spirituality and self-esteem and to identify the factors of spirituality in nurses working in a palliative care ward.MethodsA survey was conducted on 300 nurses working in a palliative care ward in the Chugoku Region[1]. This study is a cross-sectional study using an anonymous self-administered questionnaire. Higa’s spirituality rating scale A (SRS-A) and a self-esteem scale was used. Data were analyzed using the Mann–Whitney U test and Spearman’s rank correlation. ResultsThe nurses surveyed and analyzed had long experience as nurses and all demonstrated motivation in palliative care and were highly interested in spirituality. Among SRS-A subscales, they scored highest for “motivation (M = 9.41 ± 2.04),” and they were strongly affected by items “I want to fulfill my dreams and wishes” about self-realization and “I can choose the way I live.” There were significant differences in transfer to the palliative care ward (self-requested or ordered) (p < 0.01) and whether they had training (p < 0.05). Moreover, there was a positive correlation between spiritual and self-esteem (r = .518, p < 0.01).ConclusionsThe survey outcomes suggested that the important factors of spirituality intrinsic to nurses working in palliative care wards were a sense of purpose and will to envision self-realization; motivation, which is the source of energy; self-esteem, which increases self-affirmation and self-acceptance; and “educational support,” which translates “experience” into experiential knowledge. Nurses working in palliative care words possess the viewpoints on mortality and life developed through a wealth of experiences in palliative care. Educational support should aim to allow nurses to integrate their experiential knowledge with theoretical knowledge. Various risk factors including blood iron may create coronary artery diseases and lead to myocardial infarction. There are controversies with regard to the impact of blood iron on myocardial infarction. Therefore, the aim of this paper was to investigate the relationship between iron reserves and the intensity of coronary artery stenos is among angiographic candidates in Zanjan, Iran. This was a cross sectional study. Samples were consisted of patients who were hospitalized for diagnostic coronary angiography in hospitals in an urban area of Iran. A convenient sampling method was used to recruit samples via interviews and laboratory examinations for FBS, iron, TIBC, ferritin, creatinine serum, CBC, cholesterol, HDL and LDL. The samples were divided into control and intervention groups. After coronary angiography, the intervention group was evaluated by four different methods including the extent score, stenos is score, vessel score and Duke CAN Index. The samples were consisted of 89 men (60.1%) and 59 women (39.9%). The levels of ferritin (p=0.003) and iron (p=0.002), and transferrin saturation percent (p=0.002) showed significant differences between males and females (p=0.004)

Bullying merupakan perilaku negatif yang dilakukan secara berulang-ulang oleh seseorang atau sekelompok orang yang bersifat menyerang karena adanya ketidakseimbangan kekuatan antara pihak yang terlibat.Tindakan bullying dapat berdampak buruk bagi korban maupun pelakunya di masa depannya. Dampak tersebut meliputi kesepian, pencapaian akademik yang buruk, kesulitan penyesuaian (adaptasi), meningkatnya risiko penggunaan zat, keterlibatan dalam tindakan kriminal dan kerentanan gangguan mental emosional seperti cemas, insomnia, penyalahgunaan zat, depresi, mempunyai self-esteem rendah, kesulitan interpersonal, gangguan konsep diri, dan depresi (ketidakberdayaan). Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui hubungan antara konsep diri dan ketidakberdayaan dengan risiko bunuh diri pada remaja yang mengalami bullying di SMA Negeri 7 Kota Bogor. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kuantitatif dengan menggunakan metode cross-sectional study dengan bentuk pendekatan rancangan correlation study. Sampel dalam penelitian ini berjumlah 183 orang didapat dari teknik randomsampling. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa berdasarkan hasil uji hubungan dengan menggunakan Chi-Square antara konsep diri dengan ketidakberdayaan didapatkan nilai ρ (0,000) lebih kecil daripada nilai α (0,05), sedangkan uji hubungan antara konsep diri dengan risiko bunuh diri didapatkan nilai ρ (0,013) lebih kecil daripada nilai α (0,05). Dengan demikian bahwa ada hubungan antara konsep diri dan ketidakberdayaan dengan risiko bunuh diri pada remaja yang mengalami bullying di SMA Negeri 7 Kota Bogor. Kata kunci: bullying, konsep diri, ketidakberdayaan, risisko bunuh diri SELF-CONCEPT AND INEQUALITY CONNECTED WITH RISK OF SELF-SUFFICIENT IN ADOLESCENTS WHO HAVE BULLYING ABSTRACTBullying is a negative behavior that is carried out repeatedly by a person or group of people who are attacking because of an imbalance of power between the parties involved. Bullying actions can have a negative impact on victims and perpetrators in the future. These impacts include loneliness, poor academic achievement, adaptation difficulties, increased risk of substance use, involvement in criminal acts and susceptibility to mental emotional disorders such as anxiety, insomnia, substance abuse, depression, low self-esteem, interpersonal difficulties, disturbances self concept, and depression (helplessness). The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between self-concept and powerlessness with the risk of suicide in adolescents who experienced bullying in SMA Negeri 7 Kota Bogor. This research is a quantitative study using a cross-sectional study method with a correlation study design approach. The sample in this study amounted to 183 people obtained from random sampling techniques. The results showed that based on the results of the relationship test using Chi-Square between self-concept and powerlessness, the value of ρ (0,000) was smaller than the value of α (0.05), while the test of the relationship between self-concept and risk of suicide obtained a value of ρ (0.013 ) is smaller than the value of α (0.05). Thus that there is a relationship between self-concept and powerlessness with the risk of suicide in adolescents who experience bullying in SMA Negeri 7 Kota Bogor. Keywords: bullying, self-concept, helplessness, suicide risk

Studies on academic achievement worldwide are sporadic, focusing on variables more or less have been taken by the researchers, and provided knowledge. This cross-sectional study aimed to determine how the school effect influences secondary school students' academic achievements by two important significant (study habits and self-esteem). With a covenient sampling method, 400 students from eight secondary schools in Bangladesh were selected for the study. Though the students were equally divided regarding gender (Boys, 200; Girls, 200), they were different regarding school types (Public, 188; Private, 212). Their ages range from 14 to 17, with an average of 14.8. They provided responses on two Bangla version scales: Study Habit Scale and Self-Esteem Scale. Academic achievement was significantly positively correlated with both study habits (r=.268, p<.01) and self-esteem (r=.291,p<.01). Two predictors of the study were also correlated with each other (r=.283, p<.01). Public and private school students were not varied significantly in studying habits and academic achievement, but they were significantly different in self-esteem. The study habits and self-esteem jointly explained 12.3% for public school students' academic achievement whileit explained 7.5% variance for the private school students. The discussion implies that how students’ study habits and self-esteem facilitates their academic achievement.Further studies will reflect more factors influencing academic achievement.

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health is an emerging problem globally. This study aimed to examine the mediating effect of chronic illnesses in the relationship between psychological health and the acceptance of the COVID-19 vaccine, prior to the national vaccine rollout in Malaysia. An online cross-sectional study was conducted in Malaysia between December 10, 2020, and February 9, 2021. In addition to the descriptive analyses, a mediation analysis was performed to examine the mediating effect of chronic illnesses in the relationship between psychological distress and the willingness to accept the vaccine. A total of 1738 participants completed the survey. The psychological distress levels were found to be significantly different across demographic factors such as age, gender, and social economic status. This study demonstrated a partial mediating effect of chronic illnesses in the relationship between psychological distress and vaccine acceptance.

Bone is influenced by physical activity (PA) throughout life, but childhood and adolescence provide a key opportunity to maximize peak bone mass. Thus, it is important to identify the relationship between PA practiced in childhood and young adulthood to design a promotion plan for bone health. The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between different impact-loading PAs (and their continuity throughout school periods from childhood to young adulthood) and bone stiffness index (SI). In this cross-sectional study, which was conducted on 145 university students aged 18–21 years, bone measurements were measured by quantitative ultrasonometry (QUS), and PA information was recalled using a self-administered questionnaire. Associations between the SI and the impact of PA performed during secondary school (p = 0.027), high school (p = 0.002), and university (p = 0.016) periods were observed. The continuity of PA over a longer period of time was related to a higher SI (p = 0.007). Those who practiced PA throughout all school periods had a higher SI than those who practiced during primary school only (p = 0.038) or through primary and secondary schools (p = 0.009). These results suggest that impact-loading PA practiced during different school periods is related to higher values of the SI. Therefore, continuous PA from an early age may be an important contributing factor to achieving and maintaining adequate bone health.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to describe the mental health issues among teachers globally and to investigate the significant factors that specifically impact the mental health of school teachers in Okinawa, Japan.Design/methodology/approachThis cross-sectional study examined depression, anxiety, stress, self-esteem and resiliency among 174 teachers from seven schools in Okinawa, Japan. The study questionnaire consisted of four parts, including demographic data, Depression, Anxiety, and Stress scale (DASS-42), Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSE), and Connor-Davidson Resiliency Scale (CD-RISC). Multiple regression analyses were performed to identify predictors of mental health variables.FindingsOf the 174 teachers, 111 were females (64%) and 60 were males (35%). Average age of participants was 41.65 (SD = 10.07). Average number of years being a teacher was 15.50 (SD = 9.88). There was a significant gender difference in the level of self-esteem. Significant differences in anxiety were found among varying grade levels taught. Regression analyses indicated that resiliency and self-esteem significantly predicted depression, anxiety and stress among school teachers in Okinawa.Originality/valueThis is the first study among school teachers in Okinawa that examined the impact of resiliency and self-esteem on their mental health. To reduce psychological distress common within the teaching profession, social and environmental support should be provided within the school to better foster the successful promotion of teacher resiliency and self-esteem.

AbstractHearing loss is often associated with the phantom sound of tinnitus. However, the degree of the association between severity of hearing loss and tinnitus loudness taking into account the impact of other variables (e.g., emotional disturbances) is not fully understood. This is an important question for audiologists who are specialized in tinnitus rehabilitation as patients often ask whether the loudness of their tinnitus will increase if their hearing gets worse.To explore the relationship between tinnitus loudness and pure tone hearing thresholds.This was a retrospective cross-sectional study.445 consecutive patients who attended a Tinnitus and Hyperacusis Therapy Specialist Clinic in UK were included.The results of audiological tests and self-report questionnaires were gathered retrospectively from the records of the patients. Multiple-regression analysis was used to assess the relationship between tinnitus loudness, hearing loss and other variables.The regression model showed a significant relationship between the pure tone average (PTA) at the frequencies 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 kHz of the better ear and the tinnitus loudness as measured via visual analogue scale (VAS), r (regression coefficient) = 0.022 (p < 0.001). Other variables significantly associated with tinnitus loudness were tinnitus annoyance (r = 0.49, p < 0.001) and the effect of tinnitus on life (r = 0.09, p = 0.006). The regression model explained 52% of the variance of tinnitus loudness.Although increased tinnitus loudness was associated with worse PTA, the relationship was very weak. Tinnitus annoyance and impact of tinnitus on life were more strongly correlated with tinnitus loudness than PTA.

Background: Sexual dysfunction is common in females with schizophrenia and is attributed to multiple causes, including individual psychopathology and antipsychotics. Understanding the impact of relationship satisfaction on sexual functioning is not widely studied in schizophrenia. Women caregivers also experience sexual problems and were not studied in the past. Aim: To assess the nature and occurrence of sexual dysfunction in women with schizophrenia in comparison to caregivers of males without severe mental disorder. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted. A total of 30 women with schizophrenia were recruited as cases and 26 age-matched controls were recruited from female caregivers. All subjects were assessed using standardized tools such as Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) and Relationship Assessment Scale along with sociodemographic questionnaire. Results: There was a significant difference in FSFI scores and relationship scores between women with schizophrenia and caregiver control subjects. The relationship quality was better in patients with schizophrenia when compared to caregivers unlike sexual functioning. Conclusion: Sexual functioning in women is a complex phenomenon. A holistic biopsychosocial approach is necessary to understand women’s sexual function.

Abstract Objective: To compare the impact of trait emotional intelligence between students of different faculties and associated factors. Methods: the cross-sectional analytical study was conducted from August 2016 to March 2017 at the University of Faisalabad, Faisalabad, Pakistan, and comprised trait undergraduate students, both boarders and day scholars, from seven different faculties. Data was collected using the trait emotional intelligence questionnaire–short form. Student’s yearly test scores were obtained as a measure of academic achievement. Data was analysed using SPSS 20. Results: Of the 498 students, 109(21.9%) were studying medicine, 56(11.2%) dental sciences, 76(15.2%) optometry, 83(16.6%) nutrition and dietetics, 109(21.9%) physiotherapy, 35(7%) pharmacy, and 30(6%) social sciences. The overall mean age was 19.84±1.30 years. There were 210(42.2%) boarders compared to 288(57.8%) day scholars. There was significant difference in emotional intelligence based on student’s faculty (p<0.0001). Significant impact was seen on test scores of faculty residing status (p<0.05). Significant relation of emotional quotient and residing status with student’s test scores (p<0.05). Conclusion: Emotional intelligence was found to be an important factor in academic achievement and important variable in different faculties and different living conditions.
