The impact of emotional intelligence on the emotional state of nurses in public hospitals in Cyprus

IntroductionThe term emotional intelligence (EI) has gained more and more popularity in the last two decades and has been studied in various workplace settings.Objectives/aimsThe purpose of the present study was to estimate the EI in nursing personnel, to examine which factors are associated with EI and how EI correlates with their emotional state.MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted from April to May 2016 in a representative sample of nursing personnel from seven public hospitals of Cyprus. A total of 585 nurses completed the Greek Emotional Intelligence Scale (GEIS), consisting of 52 items measuring four basic emotional skills and scored on a 5-point Likert scale (from low (52) to high (260) EI). Furthermore, the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS 21) was applied. Statistical analyses were performed using the SPSS v.20.0.ResultsOverall mean EI scores were 184.11 for males and 184.82 for females. Being married and having children as well as having leading position was associated with higher EI (P = 0.024, P = 0.002, P = 0.012, respectively). The highest EI scores were identified between the middle aged nurses (36–50 years, EI = 191.5, P = 0.000) and nurses with more years of work (> 12 years, EI = 189.59, P = 0.000). The overall EI scores have moderate negative correlation with the emotional state of the nurses (P = 0.000).ConclusionsThe present study reveals under-optimal EI scores and confirms the negative relationship with the emotional state of nurses. Based on the literature, the EI can be developed, thus suitable programs could substantially improve the emotional skills in nursing personnel.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

Background. Stroke is a devastating disease. It is a major cause for the neurological admission to hospitals all over the world. Limited knowledge among the critical care nurses about stroke in general and specifically about the risk factors, signs, and symptoms of stroke usually is a main source of delayed prompt stroke management and non-compliance with follow-up rehabilitation. Therefore, there is a need for a study that examines the impact of these factors in order to promote stroke management and improve nursing care outcomes.Aim. This study aimed at measuring the knowledge of Jordanian nurses working in critical care units toward stroke patients.Methods. This cross-sectional study used the descriptive approach in order to measure the knowledge of the Jordanian nurses working in critical care units regarding stroke patients in the Jordanian hospitals. Data were collected from Jordanian critical care units' nurses from seven hospitals; five private and two public hospitals. Critical care units’ nurses were selected conveniently based on specific inclusion criteria. Eligible participants were required to complete self–reported questionnaires about knowledge in addition to completing demographic questionnaires. The descriptive and inferential statistics were conducted using the SPSS software. Results. A total of (200) Critical care units’ nurses from public and private hospitals participated in the study. The nurses in this study exhibited poor knowledge on the study scales. There were statistically significant differences among nurses according to the type of hospital on the one scales (P< .05). There is a negative relationship between the knowledge and years of nursing practice in ER or ICU (P= .013).Conclusions. The measures of knowledge among the nurses in critical care units in the Jordanian hospitals towards stroke patients seem to be highly poor. Nurses in critical care units seem to have acceptable information, but inadequate to correctly enhance stroke awareness. There is a gap that should be stuffed via planning and implementation of educational and instructional programs focused on hospital nurses as well as community sectors in order to improve the stoke focus and experience and avoid the delay in accessing the medical help which would, in return, improve stroke management and reduce its effect in Jordan.

Objectives: 1) To explore the possible impact of the pandemic on the health seeking behavior of the patients, 2) To explore the relation of socio-demographics on the utility of health-care facilities. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted by enrolling all patients ≥15 years of age presenting to the Out-Patient-Department of three main public-hospitals after obtaining ethical committee approval. A questionnaire with validated Urdu translation was filled by each participant that included socio-demographic data, pre-Covid and Covid-19 era health seeking behaviors and the impact of the pandemic on the utilization of healthcare facilities. Data was analyzed using SPSS V.19. Results: A total of 393 patients were enrolled with a male preponderance (72%) and a median age range of 31-45 years. Fifty-eight percent of the study population was unemployed and 47.3% were seeking follow up care. The frequency of ER and multiple (>4 times) OPD visits were significantly decreased in the Covid-19 times whereas, the laboratory and radiology services were largely unaffected. A significant number of patients were not satisfied with the current healthcare facilities that was seen irrespective of the socio-demographic status. Emergency Room and radiology services were largely unaffected whereas, elective procedures and laboratory facilities were reported to be severely affected or delayed in relation to socio-demographic variables. Conclusions: Healthcare inequalities have widened and depression has shown a sharp rise during this pandemic. Orientation: Workplace bullying has detrimental effects on employee well-being. Emotional intelligence may moderate the relationship between workplace bullying and flourishing.Research purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the nature of the relationship between workplace bullying and flourishing and to investigate the moderating role of emotional intelligence in the workplace bullying–flourishing relationship.Motivation for the study: There is a paucity of studies exploring the moderating role of personal resources such as emotional intelligence in the relationship between workplace bullying and flourishing.Research approach/design and method: The study used a cross-sectional design, quantitative approach and a convenience sampling method. Employees from a higher education institution (N = 1102) participated in this research. Descriptive, correlation and moderation analysis was used to analyse the data.Main findings: The results showed that there was a significant negative relationship between workplace bullying and flourishing. Emotional intelligence significantly moderated the relationship between workplace bullying and flourishing.Practical/managerial implications: Organisations should develop and/or strengthen the level of emotional intelligence in employees in order to reduce the negative effect of workplace bullying on well-being.Contribution/value-add: The findings of this research contribute to the limited body of research investigating personal resources such as emotional intelligence as a moderator in the bullying-well-being relationship.

Background and objective: Surgeons and surgical practice are influenced greatly by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic all over the world, and this impact affects patients who need surgery, especially in emergency cases. This study aimed to assess the impact of COVID-19 on surgery in the Kurdistan Region, Iraq. Methods: A survey that consisted of four sections was prepared and sent by e-mail to over 1000 surgeons with different specialties. The survey was created by google forms and was kept online from 9 October 2020 to 9 November 2020. Results: A total of 207 surgeons have responded to the survey, 146 (70.5%) males and 61 (29.5%) females with different specialists. The data shows that both private and public hospitals were affected by the pandemic equally. Thirty five (16.9%) surgeons indicated that surgery has entirely collapsed in some hospitals. All phases of surgical practice have been affected from partial to complete abandonment of surgery. Conclusion: The pandemic greatly affected surgeons and surgical practice in the Kurdistan region. Additionally, few surgeons indicated that the pandemic did not affect the surgical practice and normal functioning of their hospital. However, most surgeons agreed that the pandemic significantly impels all stages of surgery and surgical practice. Most surgeons have adapted to the situation by using communication technology and new protective measures. Motivation is exceptionally crucial in influencing the quality of health care work outcomes. In view of the mounting challenges and stressful work environment faced by nurses, social support has been identified as an essential resource that helps promote their work motivation. The central aim of this study is to explore three forms of social support (perceived organizational support, perceived supervisory support, and perceived peer support) on nurses’ motivation. Cross-sectional data were collected via questionnaires from a sample of 354 nurses working in Malaysian public hospitals. The hypothesized model was tested using partial least squares method. Our results disclosed that all forms of social support have positive effects on motivation.

Abstract. Background: Worldwide prevalence of peripheral artery disease (PAD) is increasing and peripheral vascular intervention (PVI) has become the primary invasive treatment. There is evidence that multidisciplinary team decision-making (MTD) has an impact on in-hospital outcomes. This study aims to depict practice patterns and time changes regarding MTD of different medical specialties. Methods: This is a retrospective cross-sectional study design. 20,748 invasive, percutaneous PVI of PAD conducted in the metropolitan area of Hamburg (Germany) were consecutively collected between January 2004 and December 2014. Results: MTD prior to PVI was associated with lower odds of early unsuccessful termination of the procedures (Odds Ratio 0.662, p < 0.001). The proportion of MTD decreased over the study period (30.9 % until 2009 vs. 16.6 % from 2010, p < 0.001) while rates of critical limb-threatening ischemia (34.5 % vs. 42.1 %), patients´ age (70 vs. 72 years), PVI below-the-knee (BTK) (13.2 % vs. 22.4 %), and rates of severe TASC C/D lesions BTK (43.2 % vs. 54.2 %) increased (all p < 0.001). Utilization of MTD was different between medical specialties with lowest frequency in procedures performed by internists when compared to other medical specialties (7.1 % vs. 25.7 %, p < 0.001). Conclusions: MTD prior to PVI is associated with technical success of the procedure. Nonetheless, rates of MTD prior to PVI are decreasing during the study period. Future studies should address the impact of multidisciplinary vascular teams on long-term outcomes.

BACKGROUND The impact and quality of a faculty members publications is a key factor in promotion and tenure decisions and career advancement. Traditional measures, including citation counts and journal impact factor, have notable limitations. Since 2010, alternative metrics have been proposed as another means of assessing the impact and quality of scholarly work. The Altmetric Attention Score is an objective score frequently used to determine the immediate reach of a published work across the web, including news outlets, blogs, social media, and more. Several studies evaluating the correlation between the Altmetric Attention Score and number of citations have found mixed results and may be discipline-specific. OBJECTIVE To determine the correlation between higher Altmetric Attention Scores and citation count for journal articles published in major pharmacy journals. METHODS This cross-sectional study evaluated articles from major pharmacy journals ranked in the top 10% according to the Altmetric Attention Score. Sources of attention that determined the Altmetric Attention Score were obtained, as well each articles open access status, article type, study design, and topic. Correlation between journal characteristics, including the Altmetric Attention Score and number of citations, was assessed using the Spearman’s correlation test. A Kruskal-Wallis 1-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to compare the Altmetric Attention Scores between journals. RESULTS Six major pharmacy journals were identified. A total of 1,376 articles were published in 2017 and 137 of these represented the top 10% with the highest Altmetric Attention Scores. The median Altmetric Attention Score was 19 (IQR 15-28). Twitter and Mendeley were the most common sources of attention. Over half (56.2%) of the articles were original investigations and 49.8% were either cross-sectional, qualitative, or cohort studies. No significant correlation was found between the Altmetric Attention Score and citation count (rs=0.07, P = 0.485). Mendeley was the only attention source that correlated with the number of citations (rs=0.486, P<0.001). The median Altmetric Attention Score varied widely between each journal (P<0.001). CONCLUSIONS The overall median Altmetric Attention score of 19 suggests articles published in major pharmacy journals are near the top 5% of all scientific output. However, we found no correlation between the Altmetric Attention Score and number of citations for articles published in major pharmacy journals in the year 2017.

Background. Diarrheal diseases are still one of the major causes of morbidity in under-five children in sub-Saharan Africa. In Ethiopia, diarrhea is responsible for 9% of all deaths and is the major cause of under-five mortality. Objective. To assess the impact of community-led total sanitation and hygiene on the prevalence of diarrheal disease and factors associated among under-five children in Gamo Gofa Zone. Methods. Community-based comparative cross-sectional study design was used to compare the impact of community-led total sanitation and hygiene intervention on under-five diarrheal disease. Multistage sampling method was employed. The data were collected by using pretested structured questionnaires. Data quality was ensured by daily supervision completeness and consistency. The data were coded, entered, and cleaned by using Epi Info version 7 and were analyzed by using SPSS version 20. Bivariate and multivariable analyses were carried out by using binary logistic regression. Significance was declared by using p value of <0.05 and AOR with 95% confidence intervals. Results. The response rate of this study was 93.3%. The overall diarrhea prevalence was 27.5% (CI = (24.06, 30.97)) which was 18.9% (CI = (14.94, 23.2)) in implemented and 36.2%. (CI = (30.41, 41.59)) in nonimplemented woredas. Children whose age was between 12 and 23 months (AOR = 1.6) and greater than 24 months (AOR = 5), availability of handwashing facilities (AOR = 4), disposal of waste in open field (AOR = 9.7), unimproved source of drinking water (AOR = 6.5), using only water for handwashing (AOR = 6), children who started complementary feeding less than 6 months (AOR = 5.6) and greater than 6 months (AOR = 5.2), and utensils used to feed children such as bottle (AOR = 3.9) were the factors positively associated with diarrhea. Conclusion. The overall prevalence of under-five diarrhea was 27.5%. The prevalence was low in CLTSH woredas as compared with non-CLTSH woredas. The study showed that handwashing facility, using only water for handwashing, open refuse disposal, and unimproved source of drinking water among under-five had a statistically significant association with diarrhea occurrence in CLTSH nonimplemented areas. Integrated efforts are needed from the Ministry of Health together with the WASH Project in improving drinking water, handwashing facilities, and solid waste disposal practices.
