Field experiments were conducted during the winter seasons of 1998–1999 and 1999–2000 at Houfa in northern Jordan, to study the effect of the date and rate of sowing on the yield and yield components of narbon vetch (Vicia narbonensis L.). Progressive delays in sowing beyond 1 st January led to yield reductions of 11.1 and 17.9 at successive 15-day intervals. Plant height, pods stem –1, stems m –2 and 1000-grain weight followed the same trend as the yield. Grain yield was not significantly affected by the sowing rate.

SUMMARYA series of trials were conducted during 1979–82 under semi-arid conditions in a Mediterranean-type environment to study the edge effects in mechanized durum wheat and barley variety trials when uncropped pathways are left between plots. Varietal differences in edge effects on grain yield were in most trials not significant. Thus, edge effects do not distort significantly the relative ranking of varieties.Edge effects were significant for all traits studied and higher in grain and straw yields. These effects were also higher in drier seasons. The overestimation of grain yield from whole plots was 13–18% in relatively high rainfall seasons and 29% in a dry season. In two seasons the scores on the two outer rows were higher than on the two central rows by 89 and 117 % for grain yield, by 72 and 73% for straw yield, by 44 and 48% for numbers of tillers, by 6% for 1000-grain weight and by 14 and 40% for number of grains per tiller. The edge effect was not confined to the outer rows, but it extended to the inner rows of the plot; the magnitude of this effect varied with season and trait.Rows adjacent to the pathway and unprotected from wind had a lower value for all traits than the opposite rows of the pathway, which were protected by the inner rows.

Aiming to evaluate the postharvest quality of ‘Roxo de Valinhos’ fig fruits grown in semi-arid conditions, this experiment was carried out in November, 2014, where fig fruit variety ‘Roxo de Valinhos’ were harvested from plants located at the didactic orchard of the Federal Rural University of Semi-Arid (UFERSA), Mossoró-RN, Brazil. Fruits were randomly harvested from 30 fig plants, spaced 2 m x 1.5 m, with 2 years old, according to three the fruit development stages (50%, 75% and 100% mature). The fruits were analyzed in Postharvest Physiology Laboratory, where the physical and chemical characteristics were evaluated, using 10 fruits for each stage. The evaluated characteristics were: weight, length, diameter, firmness, soluble solids, pH, titratable acidity and vitamin C. For the physical characteristics, fruits 100% mature presented the best results for weight, length and diameter, except for firmness which in fruits 50% mature presented the best results. For the chemical characteristics, only the soluble solid variable was signiicant and fruits 100% mature showed the best result, in this way, the fig tree ‘Roxo de Valinhos’ achieved the postharvest fruit quality and is viable for the semiarid region of the Rio Grande Norte State.

Lentil (Lens culinaris Medikus) is a protein-rich cool-season food legume with an excellent source of protein, prebiotic carbohydrates, minerals, and vitamins. With climate change, heat, and drought stresses have become more frequent and intense in lentil growing areas with a strong influence on phenology, grain yield, and nutritional quality. This study aimed to assess the impact of heat and drought stresses on phenology, grain yield, and nutritional quality of lentil. For this purpose, 100 lentil genotypes from the global collection were evaluated under normal, heat, and combined heat-drought conditions. Analysis of variance revealed significant differences (p < 0.001) among lentil genotypes for phenological traits, yield components, and grain quality traits. Under no stress conditions, mineral concentrations among lentil genotypes varied from 48 to 109 mg kg−1 for iron (Fe) and from 31 to 65 mg kg−1 for zinc (Zn), while crude protein content ranged from 22.5 to 32.0%. Iron, zinc, and crude protein content were significantly reduced under stress conditions, and the effect of combined heat-drought stress was more severe than heat stress alone. A significant positive correlation was observed between iron and zinc concentrations under both no stress and stress conditions. Based on grain yield, crude protein, and iron and zinc concentrations, lentil genotypes were grouped into three clusters following the hierarchical cluster analysis. Promising lentil genotypes with high micronutrient contents, crude protein, and grain yield with the least effect of heat and drought stress were identified as the potential donors for biofortification in the lentil breeding program.

SUMMARYGrain barley was grown either continually or in rotation with fallow in a 12-year experiment. Annual rainfall ranged from 120 to 297 mm. As the water requirement of the crop is 240 mm, growth in most seasons occurred under water stress. The amount of water conserved under fallow was only significant (75–100 mm) in three of the 12 years and only once did the water conserved increase barley yield in the following year. The total grain yield over the experimental period was twice as high in the barley–barley sequence as in the barley–fallow sequence.Cultiuo continuo de cebada o después de barbecho
