An analysis of the shape memory effect of a NiTi alloy by using the spark plasma sintering approach has been carried out. Spark plasma sintering of Ti50Ni50 powder (20–63 µm) at a temperature of 900 °C produced specimens showing good shape memory effects. However, the sample showed 2.5% porosity due to a load of 48 MPa. Furthermore, an apparent shape memory effect was recorded and the specimens were characterized by uniformity in chemical composition and shape memory alloys of NiTi showed significant austenite phases with a bending strain recovery of >2.5%.

Porous Al with controlled pore size was prepared by the spacer method including spark plasma sintering and the dissolution of space-holding NaCl particles. The NaCl of the controlled pore size (particle diameter control range of 5˰ڌm~20˰ڌm) were prepared by precipitation method. The effects of sintering condition such as the sintering electric current intensity, voltage and the size, morphology and content of NaCl powder on the porosity and size of porous Al are investigated. The porous Al with higher porosity of 69.41% and smaller pore size of 5 ڌm was obtained.

In order to improve the machining performance of the new type porous metal bond wheel, a new attempt were carried out for fabricating porous metal bond matrix with adjustable and high porosity as well as large pore size by use of pore-forming agent ammonium bicarbonate (NH4HCO3) and a vacuum loose powder sintering process. The porosity, bending strength and microstructure of the as-sintered porous metal bond matrix have been studied. The results show that the pore-forming agent NH4HCO3 with a certain amount can effectively increase porosity and pore size. The porosity of the fabricated porous metal bond matrix increases linearly with addition of ammonium bicarbonate and reaches as high as 67.7%, while the size of pores is larger than 300 μm. Meanwhile, the use of the raw materials were given and the sintering mechanism was discussed.

The tribological behaviors of NiTi alloy produced by the spark plasma sintering (SPS) method before and after annealing were investigated at various loading conditions via indentation, scratch, and wear tests. Indentation tests were performed by a pyramidal Berkovich indenter, while scratch and wear tests were carried out by a diamond Rockwell spherical indenter at room temperature. The annealing of the as-prepared samples was performed at 350, 450, and 550 °C in the ambient atmosphere. The influence of the annealing temperature on the sample behavior towards tribological study was investigated here. The results indicated that the alloy annealed at 350 °C showed a higher hardness compared to the other annealed alloys. The scratch and wear resistance of the annealed sample at 350 °C showed a better performance in comparison to the other samples under a constant load. The high wear resistance of the annealed NiTi alloy may be attributed to its metastable R-phase. The detection and evaluation of acoustic emissions during the nano/micro-tribomechanical testing proved to be a very effective way for the exploration of the durability of SPS NiTi alloys.
