The subject of this chapter revolves around how Industry 4.0 is changing our way of life. The way we communicate, travel, socialize, learn, relax, or do business changed significantly. As a major architecture and design offices, Industry 4.0 technologies are adding new layers to our business every day. This affects the design of offices, houses, communities, and cities. The relation with contractors, customers, and all stakeholders have changed creating new interfaces, channels, and touch points. Terms such as “collective intelligence” or “crowdsourcing” come into the picture with development in the mobile technology, collaboration tools, and Industry 4.0 ecosystem. It is interesting to see how this advanced means are facilitating new mindsets in design architects and construction industry. Customer expectations are being elevated as well. This is adding a lot of touch points with suppliers and consumers, and that is why a new innovative contracts and contracting is required.

One of the most important stages in the construction process is selecting the right contractor considering the smallest price that may raise many doubts. The cheapest option may be uneconomi­cal in view of a failure of technical quality and assessment of building lifetime. The article reviews literature and worldwide used practice to establish the most important factors of contrac­tor’s competitiveness. The paper also determines the main factors of the competitiveness of roofing contractors and evaluates qual­ity as a competitive advantage of the companies having influence on other factors of competitiveness. In conclusion; important proposals for assessing the competitiveness of the contractor and recommendations for future research are provided. Santrauka Vienas svarbiausių statybos proceso etapų – parinkti tinkamą rangovą. Rangovo pasirinkimas pagal mažiausią kai­ną kelia daug abejonių. Pigiausias pasirinkimas gali būti neekonomiškas, atsižvelgiant į nepakankamą pagamintos produkcijos techninę kokybę ir įvertinant statybos objekto gyvavimo trukmę. Norint išsiaiškinti svarbiausius rangovo konkurencingumo veiksnius, buvo atlikta pasaulinės literatūros ir praktikos apžvalga. Straipsnyje nustatyti pagrindiniai įmonių, klojančių prilydo­mąsias stogų medžiagas, konkurencingumo veiksniai. Įvertinta kokybės, kaip įmonės konkurencinio pranašumo, įtaka kitiems jos konkurencingumo veiksniams. Pateikti siūlymai rangovo konkurencingumui vertinti, taip pat būsimų tyrimų pasiūlymai.

In recent years, concrete repair has become an integral part of the construction industry. With the vast quantity of concrete used in the South African construction industry over the past 100 years, one can expect an increase in repair and rehabilitation requirements during the extended lifecycle of exposed concrete structures. Crack repair, re-profiling of spalled areas and surface sealing with polymer related materials forms the bulk of such repair and rehabilitation operations. Due to the complexity of these projects and the variety of professionals and other stakeholders involved from the diagnostics to the implementation phase (specialists consultants, contractors, suppliers and owners of the structures), considerable problems seem to have surfaced to ensure cost-effective but sustainable and durable outcomes. It has been found that in many concrete repair projects, the responsibility for the repair work, adequate quality control and the assessment of successful patch repairs are not fully embraced by the various stakeholders.This concern has led to the research as reported in this paper. The research entailed a series of questionnaires drawn up specifically for the four different stakeholder sectors of the concrete repair industry. The results indicate that, although there is agreement that concrete repair is a highly specialized field, there is not enough training in the correct use of the repair materials, nor enough knowledge regarding the diagnostics or material specification and selection processes. Knowledge on polymer modified mortar are also minimal. These problems are compounded by inadequate quality control and lack of ongoing monitoring of patch repair failure. The paper concludes with suggestions on the way forward.

The article explains the necessity to implement new methodological approaches to the establishment of regulatory support of the construction industry based on the parametric normalization method and defines the first priority steps towards regulatory framework reformation. A comfort environment is the main goal of architectural activities. However, in the majority of cases, this goal is implemented by overcoming various artificially created obstacles. One of the obstacles includes the current regulatory support that does not allow project designers to develop new interesting architectural and engineering solutions due to its content and excessive specification, as well as slows down the adoption of advanced technologies appearing in global designing and construction practice and entering the Ukrainian market. There is the way out. It is referred to the implementation of the parametric method for defining regulatory requirements, which will help project designers solve construction object creation issues unlike the current prescriptive (or administrative) method. The introduction of the parametric method means not only changes in approaches to the definition of regulatory requirements, but also fundamental changes in the whole structure of regulatory support.

The adoption of sustainable practices has become increasingly common in the professional field. In order to avoid wasting materials and using products that cause less environmental impact, the construction industry seeks to put sustainability into practice. Environmental certifications play a key role in this sector as a way to ensure that such practices are performed correctly. In this context, the objective of the article was to conduct a study on the role of environmental certifications in the civil construction sector, taking into account the way they are disclosed and applied. Although the professionals of the area are aware of the possibility of a building receiving a certain certification, it was verified that the information regarding the concept and the process to obtain an environmental certification are scarce.

Knowledge management has largely been considered from the perspective of internal generation. It is posed that external provision will increase due to the diversity of problems and scarce resources, the arising issues being explored through a case study. The aim is to explore this process for construction projects. It will be shown that the successful delivery of knowledge services for the construction industry depends upon the way in which the provider conducts its marketing and the operation of gatekeepers in the project organisation. Blockchain provides a secure decentralized information management system that can solve many common problems facing the construction industry. The loose structure of the construction industry, the way that public and private projects are tendered, and the supply chain system it uses for material and service delivery provide unique challenges and problems. New information technology management systems such as BIM and RFID are used to address some of these issues, though not completely. Blockchain technology can be used to further improve the information management systems in construction, provide more automation and mitigate many possible legal conflicts by default. Implementation of blockchain technology in the construction industry can also result in the use of smart contracts with fewer administrative struggles, improve the flow of the project, material, and service delivery, and increase the security and currentness of BIM or project documents. This study aims to explore the applications of blockchain technology in improving the construction industry's information management systems. It is concluded that not only the blockchain technology has potential in addressing some of the common problems in the construction industry but also it is adaptable to the construction industry structure and the way it is practiced. Thus, blockchain technology is a viable option for adaptation in the construction industry.
