Biochar is an efficient soil amendment used for promoting plant resistance to heavy metal (HM)-contaminated soils. There is a need for further investigation of its impacts on plants and soil. This study was undertaken as a pot experiment to assess the effect of biochar (0, 2.5, and 5% mass fractions) on the morphological, physiological and biochemical responses of white willow seedlings (Salix alba L.) cultured in uncontaminated soil and mixed soil contaminated with HM (Cu, Pb, and Cd). Additionally, some chemical properties and HM bioavailability were evaluated. Biochar increased height and diameter, root elongation, leaf area and dry biomass of the seedlings in both soils. Its addition to the contaminated soil reduced electrolyte leakage, the malondialdehyde and proline contents but increased the chlorophyll content, net photosynthesis rate, intercellular CO2 concentration and transpiration rate in the leaf. Use of biochar (especially at 5% rate) in both soils, increased soil pH, total nitrogen, soil organic carbon and available P and K, while in the contaminated soil the availability of Cu, Pb, and Cd decreased. The results showed that biochar is a suitable amendment to contaminated soils that improves plant properties by improving soil chemical features and immobilizing HMs.

AbstractChromium (Cr) is a common toxic heavy metal that is widely used in all kinds of industries, causing a series of environmental problems. Nanoscale zero- valent iron (nZVI) is considered to be an ideal remediation material for contaminated soil, especially for heavy metal pollutants. As a material of low toxicity and good activity, nZVI has been widely applied in the in situ remediation of soil hexavalent chromium (Cr(vi)) with mobility and toxicity in recent years. In this paper, some current technologies for the preparation of nZVI are summarized and the remediation mechanism of Cr(vi)-contaminated soil is proposed. Five classified modified nZVI materials are introduced and their remediation processes in Cr(vi)-contaminated soil are summarized. Key factors affecting the remediation of Cr(vi)-contaminated soil by nZVI are studied. Interaction mechanisms between nZVI-based materials and Cr(vi) are explored. This study provides a comprehensive review of the nZVI materials for the remediation of Cr(vi)-contaminated soil, which is conducive to reducing soil pollution.

Miscanthus × giganteus (M. × giganteus) is a perspective plant produced on marginal and contaminated lands with biomass used for energy or bioproducts. In the current study, M. × giganteus development was tested in the diesel-contaminated soils (ranged from 250 mg kg−1 to 5000 mg kg−1) and the growth dynamic, leaves quantity, plants total area, number of harvested stems and leaves, SPAD and NPQt parameters were evaluated. Results showed a remarkable M. × giganteus growth in a selected interval of diesel-contaminated soil with sufficient harvested biomass. The amendment of soil by biochar 1 (produced from wastewater sludge) and biochar 2 (produced from a mixture of wood waste and biohumus) improved the crop’s morphological and physiological parameters. Biochar 1 stimulated the increase of the stems’ biomass, while biochar 2 increased the leaves biomass. The plants growing in the uncontaminated soil decreased the content of NO3, pH (KCl), P2O5 and increased the content of NH4. Photosynthesis parameters showed that incorporating biochar 1 and biochar 2 to the diesel-contaminated soil prolonged the plants’ vegetation, which was more potent for biochar 1. M. × giganteus utilization united with biochar amendment can be recommended to remediate diesel-contaminated land in concentration range 250–5000 mg kg−1.

This paper describes the model of heavy metal-Cu contaminated soil remediation standard value based on risk assessment. In the Cu contamination risk assessment model, the main exposure methods are oral ingestion and inhalation through breathing, which not only simplifies the calculation but also make people get a clearer understanding of the way of Cu contamination. We get the simplified formula, calculate and discuss Cu contaminated soil remediation target value in specific parameters to provide reference and basis for the remediation of Cu contaminated soil.
