Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate how speech naturalness relates to masculinity–femininity and gender identification (accuracy and reaction time) for cisgender male and female speakers as well as transmasculine and transfeminine speakers. Method Stimuli included spontaneous speech samples from 20 speakers who are transgender (10 transmasculine and 10 transfeminine) and 20 speakers who are cisgender (10 male and 10 female). Fifty-two listeners completed three tasks: a two-alternative forced-choice gender identification task, a speech naturalness rating task, and a masculinity/femininity rating task. Results Transfeminine and transmasculine speakers were rated as significantly less natural sounding than cisgender speakers. Speakers rated as less natural took longer to identify and were identified less accurately in the gender identification task; furthermore, they were rated as less prototypically masculine/feminine. Conclusions Perceptual speech naturalness for both transfeminine and transmasculine speakers is strongly associated with gender cues in spontaneous speech. Training to align a speaker's voice with their gender identity may concurrently improve perceptual speech naturalness. Supplemental Material https://doi.org/10.23641/asha.12543158

Aim. To determine the response of the populations of Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae and Leptospira interrogans pathogenic microorganisms to the impact of broadleaf cattail (Thypha latifolia) root diffusates. Methods. Aqueous solutions of T. latifolia root diffusates were sterilized by vacuum fi ltration through the fi lters with 0.2-micron pore diameter. The experimental samples contained cattail secretions, sterile water, and cultures of E. rhusiopathiae or L. interrogans. The same amount of sterile water, as in the experimental samples, was used for the purpose of control, and the same quantity of microbial cultures was added in it. After exposure, the density of cells in the experimental and control samples was determined. Results. Root diffusates of T. latifolia caused an increase in cell density in the populations of E. rhusiopathiae throughout the whole range of the studied dilutions (1:10–1:10000). In the populations of the 6 studied serological variants of L. interrogans spirochetes (pomona, grippotyphosa, copenhageni, kabura, tarassovi, canicola), the action of broadleaf cattail root diffusates caused the decrease in cell density. A stimulatory effect was marked in the experimental samples of the pollonica serological variant of leptospira. Conclusions. The populations of E. rhusiopathiae and L. interrogans pathogenic microorganisms respond to the allelopathic effect of Thypha latifolia by changing the cell density. The obtained results provide the background to assume that broadleaf cattail thickets create favorable conditions for the existence of E. rhusiopathiae pathogen bacteria. The reduced cell density of L. interrogans in the experimental samples compared to the control samples observed under the infl uence of T. latifolia root diffusates suggests that reservoirs with broadleaf cattail thickets are marked by the unfavorable conditions for the existence of pathogenic leptospira (except L. pollonica).

AbstractThe NASA GeneLab Data System (GLDS) was recently developed to facilitate cross-experiment comparisons in order to understand the response of microorganisms to the human spaceflight environment. However, prior spaceflight experiments have been conducted using a wide variety of different hardware, media, culture conditions, and procedures. Such confounding factors could potentially mask true differences in gene expression between spaceflight and ground control samples. In an attempt to mitigate such confounding factors, we describe here the development of a standardized set of hardware, media, and protocols for liquid cultivation of microbes in Biological Research in Canisters (BRIC) spaceflight hardware, using the model bacteria Bacillus subtilis strain 168 and Staphylococcus aureus strain UAMS-1 as examples.

В эндотелиальных клетках линии EA.hy926, инкубированных в растворе, содержащем 2 мкг/мл наносеребра, измеряли боковое светорассеяние. По сравнению с контрольными образцами этот параметр возрастал, в то время как прочие значимые характеристики не изменялись. Это подтверждает чувствительность метода к изменившемуся состоянию клеток и указывает на поглощение наночастиц серебра клетками при концентрации ниже токсической. The study demonstrated a possibility for detection of intracellular silver nanoparticles using flow cytometry. The parameter used in this work, side scattering, was measured in EA.hy926 endothelial cells incubated in a 2 mg/ml silver nanoparticle solution. This parameter was increased compared to control samples. Therefore, this technique was sensitive to changes in the cell status and suggested the cell uptake of the particles under the subtoxic conditions.

Aim: To search the genes related to the mechanisms of the occurrence of glioma and to try to build a prediction model for glioblastomas. Background: The morbidity and mortality of glioblastomas are very high, which seriously endangers human health. At present, the goals of many investigations on gliomas are mainly to understand the cause and mechanism of these tumors at the molecular level and to explore clinical diagnosis and treatment methods. However, there is no effective early diagnosis method for this disease, and there are no effective prevention, diagnosis or treatment measures. Methods: First, the gene expression profiles derived from GEO were downloaded. Then, differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the disease samples and the control samples were identified. After that, GO and KEGG enrichment analyses of DEGs were performed by DAVID. Furthermore, the correlation-based feature subset (CFS) method was applied to the selection of key DEGs. In addition, the classification model between the glioblastoma samples and the controls was built by an Support Vector Machine (SVM) based on selected key genes. Results and Discussion: Thirty-six DEGs, including 17 upregulated and 19 downregulated genes, were selected as the feature genes to build the classification model between the glioma samples and the control samples by the CFS method. The accuracy of the classification model by using a 10-fold cross-validation test and independent set test was 76.25% and 70.3%, respectively. In addition, PPP2R2B and CYBB can also be found in the top 5 hub genes screened by the protein– protein interaction (PPI) network. Conclusions: This study indicated that the CFS method is a useful tool to identify key genes in glioblastomas. In addition, we also predicted that genes such as PPP2R2B and CYBB might be potential biomarkers for the diagnosis of glioblastomas.
