Excessive intake of zinc is a known but often forgotten cause of copper deficiency, and its consequences in the context of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) are not widely discussed. Zinc-induced copper deficiency (ZICD) can result in erythropoietin (EPO)-resistant anemia and may not be considered as a possible etiology when conducting the work-up. We present a case wherein an ESRD patient had been receiving excess zinc for several months and subsequently experienced EPO-resistant anemia. Our patient’s GI work-up was negative, and increased doses of iron and EPO-stimulating agent were ineffective. She underwent a bone marrow biopsy and more serological testing. She was ultimately diagnosed with ZICD, and cessation of her zinc supplement and initiation of copper replacement proved effective in restoring EPO responsiveness. Awareness of ZICD as a possible factor in EPO-resistant anemia could lead to an expedited diagnosis and avoid an unnecessary and extensive work-up.

Abstract Background In order to enhance the antibacterial activity and reduce the toxicity of Zn2+, novel complexes of Zn(II) were synthesized. Results A water-soluble zinc-glucose-citrate complex (ZnGC) with antibacterial activity was synthesized at pH 6.5. The structure, morphology, characterization, acute toxicity, antibacterial and antioxidant activities, and in situ intestinal absorption were investigated. The results showed that zinc ion was linked with citrate by coordinate bond while the glucose was linked with it through intermolecular hydrogen bonding. The higher the molecular weight of sugar is, the more favorable it is to inhibit the formation of zinc citrate precipitation. Compared with ZnCl2, ZnGC complex presented better antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus, Gram-positive) and Escherichia coli (E. coli, Gram-negative). Conclusions The results of acute toxicity showed no obvious toxicity in this test and in situ intestinal absorption study, suggesting that ZnGC complex could be used as a potential zinc supplement for zinc deficiency.

Background: Although previous studies suggested the protective effect of zinc for type-2 diabetes, the unitary causal effect remains inconclusive. Objective: We investigated the causal effect of zinc as a single intervention on glycemic control in type-2 diabetes patients, using a systematic review of RCTs and two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR). Methods: Four outcomes were identified: fasting blood glucose/fasting glucose, hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), and serum insulin/fasting insulin level. In the systematic review, four databases were searched up to June 2021. Results were synthesized through the random-effects meta-analysis. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that are independent and are strongly related to zinc supplements were selected from MR-base to perform the two-sample MR with inverse-variance weighted (IVW) coefficient. Results: In the systematic review, 14 trials were included. The zinc supplement led to a significant reduction in the post-trial mean of fasting blood glucose (mean difference (MD): -26.52, 95%CI: -35.13, -17.91), HbA1C (MD: -0.52, 95%CI: -0.90, -0.13), and HOMA-IR (MD: -1.65, 95%CI: -2.62, -0.68), compared to the control group. In the two-sample MR, zinc supplement with 2 SNPs associated with lower fasting glucose (IVW coefficient: -2.04, 95%CI: -3.26, -0.83), but not specified type-2 diabetes. Conclusion: Although the study was limited by the few trials (review) and SNPs (two-sample MR), we demonstrated that the single zinc supplementary improved glycemic control among type-2 diabetes patients with causal evidence to a certain extent.

Zinc is an indispensable trace element required for several critical functions of the human body. Deficiencies of micronutrients can impair immune function and increase susceptibility to infectious disease. It is noteworthy that higher susceptibility to the SARS-CoV-2 viral infection is seen in individuals with micronutrient deficiencies and poorer overall nutrition. Research in the last two decades suggests that one-third of the global population may be deficient in zinc, which affects the health and well-being of individuals of all ages and gender. Zinc deficiency is now considered one of the factors associated with susceptibility to infection and the detrimental progression of COVID-19. The trace element is essential for immunocompetence and antiviral activity, rendering zinc supplements highly popular and widely consumed. Zinc supplements are required in small doses daily, and their absorption is affected by food rich in fiber and phytase. The organic forms of zinc such as picolinate, citrate, acetate, gluconate, and the monomethionine complexes are better absorbed and have biological effects at lower doses than inorganic salts. Considering the present global scenario, choosing the right zinc supplement is essential for maintaining good health. In the present review, we reexamine the role of zinc in immunity and antiviral activity and a comparative account of different forms of zinc supplements.

Zinc (Zn) is one of the essential micronutrients required for optimum plant growth. Substantial quantity of applied inorganic zinc in soil is converted into unavailable form. Zinc solubilising bacteria are potential alternates for zinc supplement. Among 10 strains screened for Zn solubilisation, P29, P33, and B40 produced 22.0 mm clear haloes on solid medium amended with ZnCO3. Similarly, P17 and B40 showed 31.0 mm zone in ZnO incorporated medium. P29 and B40 showed significant release of Zn in broth amended with ZnCO3(17 and 16.8 ppm) and ZnO (18 and 17 ppm), respectively. The pH of the broth was almost acidic in all the cases ranging from 3.9 to 6.1 in ZnCO3and from 4.1 to 6.4 in ZnO added medium. Short term pot culture experiment with maize revealed that seed bacterization with P29 @ 10 g·kg−1significantly enhanced total dry mass (12.96 g) and uptake of N (2.268%), K (2.0%), Mn (60 ppm), and Zn (278.8 ppm).

Physiological problems due to deficiency of minerals and vitamins level in Bangladeshi female population are on the rise. The primary goal of this study was to find out the intake of nutritional supplements among urban female population. A survey on nutritional supplements was designed for females in some selected area of Dhaka city. One hundred fifty females were recruited, segmented under two sections (non-pregnant / pregnant) and most of them were interviewed face-to-face systematically. 10.7% of the sample was pregnant women and the rest (89.3%) was the non-pregnant category. Participants were asked questions about their prescription drug patterns and intake of nutritional supplements. The study revealed that 53.0% of the female patients were not aware of the value of daily intake of nutritional foods. So, we also found that nutritional supplements were given to the patients continuously (34.48%), occasionally (18.39%) and at first (28.74%). Calcium supplement (36.90%), zinc supplement (14.10 %) and iron supplement (19.90 %) were prescribed most. Bangladesh Pharmaceutical Journal 23(1): 39-43, 2020

This study demonstrates that Thelephora ganbajun had a strong ability to absorb zinc, and zinc can be compartmentally stored in the small vesicles and mainly accumulated in the form of zinc-enriched polysaccharides (zinc content was 25.0±1.27 mg/g). Mycelia zinc polysaccharides (MZPS) and its fractions were isolated. The main fraction (MZPS-2) with the highest antioxidant activity in vitro was composed of mannose : galacturonic acid : glucose : galactose in a molar ratio of 61.19 : 1 : 39.67 : 48.67, with a weight-averaged molecular weight of 5.118×105 Da. MZPS-2 had both α-pyranose and β-pyranose configuration and had a triple helical conformation. By establishing zebrafish models, we found that MZPS-2 can significantly scavenge free radicals, reduce the generation of reactive oxygen species caused by inflammation, and inhibit the recruitment of neutrophils toward the injury site. Therefore, MZPS-2 exhibited antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects and can be used as a zinc supplement with specific biological activities to alleviate zinc deficiency complications, such as chronic oxidative stress or inflammation.
