The turbulent flow field in a practical gas turbine combustor is very complex because of the interactions between various flows resulting from components like multiple types of swirlers, dilution holes, and liner effusion cooling holes. Numerical simulations of flows in such complex combustor configurations are challenging. The challenges result from (a) the complexities of the interfaces between multiple three-dimensional shear layers, (b) the need for proper treatment of a large number of tiny effusion holes with multiple angles, and (c) the requirements for fast turnaround times in support of engineering design optimization. Both the Reynolds averaged Navier–Stokes simulation (RANS) and the large eddy simulation (LES) for the practical combustor geometry are considered. An autonomous meshing using the cut-cell Cartesian method and adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) is demonstrated for the first time to simulate the flow in a practical combustor geometry. The numerical studies include a set of computations of flows under a prescribed pressure drop across the passage of interest and another set of computations with all passages open with a specified total flow rate at the plenum inlet and the pressure at the exit. For both sets, the results of the RANS and the LES flow computations agree with each other and with the corresponding measurements. The results from the high-resolution LES simulations are utilized to gain fundamental insights into the complex turbulent flow field by examining the profiles of the velocity, the vorticity, and the turbulent kinetic energy. The dynamics of the turbulent structures are well captured in the results of the LES simulations.

In contrast to conventional multiblade centrifugal pumps, single-blade pumps are characterized by a significant fluctuation of head and highly transient and circumferentially nonuniform flow field even in the best-efficiency point. For a contribution to a better understanding of the flow field and an improvement of numerical methods, a combined experimental and numerical study is performed with special emphasis on the analysis of the transient pressure field. In an open test rig, piezoresistive pressure sensors are utilized for the measurement of transient in- and outflow conditions and the volute casing wall pressure fluctuations. The quality of the numerical simulations is ensured by a careful adoption of the real geometry details in the simulation model, a grid study and a time step study. While the power curve is well reproduced by the numerical simulations, the time-averaged head is systematically overpredicted, probably due to underestimation of losses. Transient pressure boundary conditions for the numerical simulation show a better prediction of the measured pressure amplitude than constant boundary conditions, whereas the time-averaged head prediction is not improved. For a more accurate prediction of the transient flow field and the time-averaged characteristics, the utilization of scale-resolving turbulence models is assumed to be indispensable.

Abstract Aerodynamic measurements and numerical simulations carried out on a model of a high-pressure valve assembly used for nozzle governing of a turbine with 135MW output are described in this paper. Aim of the study is to investigate effects of control valve’s strainers on pressure losses and unsteadiness in the flow field. It is an important task since undesirable flow fluctuations can lead to operational reliability issues. Measurements were carried out in the Aerodynamic laboratory of the Institute of Thermomechanics of the Czech Academy of Sciences (IT) where an aerodynamic tunnel is installed. Numerical simulations were carried out in the Doosan Skoda Power (DSP) Company using ANSYS software tools. The experimental model consists of one of two identical parts of the real valve assembly. It means it consists of an inlet pipeline, a stop valve, a valve chamber with two independent control valves, its diffusers and outlet pipelines. The numerical model consists of both assembly parts and includes also an A-wheel control stage in order to simulate the real turbine operating points. The different lifts of the main cone in each control valve for its useful combinations were investigated. Results were evaluated on the model with control valve’s strainers, which were historically used in order to stabilize the flow, and without them. The results of the experimental measurement were compared with the numerical results in the form of pressure losses prediction. From measured pressure fluctuations, it was found out where and for which conditions a danger of flow instabilities occurs. It can be concluded that there is a border, in terms of operating conditions, where the flow field starts to be unstable and this border is different dependent of the fact whether the control valve’s strainers are used or not. Therefore, the areas of safe and danger operational reliability can be predicted. The influence of the control valve’s strainers on the maximal amplitude of periodic fluctuations appears only for the cases when valves are highly overloaded. For normal operating conditions, there is no difference. As a result, the control valve’s strainers do not have to be used in standard applications of valve assemblies. Furthermore, a loss model for valve pressure loss estimation could be updated. Therefore, a pressure loss should be predicted with a sufficient accuracy for each new turbine bid with similar valve assemblies.

Purpose This paper aims to demonstrate the capabilities of a diffuse interface free energy lattice Boltzmann method to perform direct numerical simulations of liquid–liquid dispersions in a well-controlled turbulent environment. The goal of this research study is to develop numerical techniques that can visualize and quantify drop interaction with the turbulent vortices. The obtained information will be used for the development of sub-models of drop breakup for multi-scale simulations. Design/methodology/approach A pure binary liquid system is considered that is subject to fully developed statistically stationary turbulent flow field in a cubic fully periodic box with the edge size of 300 lattice units. Three turbulent flow fields with varying energy input are examined and their coherent structures are visualized using a normalized Q-criterion. The evolution of the liquid–liquid interface is tracked as a function of time. The detailed explanation of the numerical method is provided with a highlight on a choice of the numerical parameters. Findings Drop breakup mechanisms differ depending on energy input. Drops break due to interaction with the vortices. Quantification of turbulent structures shows that the size of vortices increases with the decrease of energy input. Drop interacts simultaneously with multiple vortices of the size comparable to or smaller than the drop size. Vortices of the size smaller than the drop size disturb drop interface and pinch off the satellites. Vortices of the size comparable to the drop size tend to elongate the drop and tear it apart producing daughter drops and satellites. Addition of the second phase enhances turbulent dissipation at the high wavenumbers. To obtain physically realistic two-phase energy spectra, the multiple-relaxation-time collision operator should be used. Originality/value Detailed information of drop breakup in the turbulent flow field is crucial for the development of drop breakup sub-models that are necessary for multi-scale numerical simulations. The improvement of numerical methods that can provide these data and produce reliable results is important. This work made one step towards a better understanding of how drops interact with the turbulent vortices.

Numerical simulations for the Ahmed model with 25° slant angle are performed under three different turbulent parameters, intensity and length scale, intensity and viscosity ratio, k and epsilon. The external flow field of ahmed model with 25° slant angle is got, and all the velocity vectors, pressure distribution and the drag coefficient of the flow field are obtained as well. The comparison between the numerical simulations and the experimental statistics shows that intensity and viscosity and k and epsilon characterized by higher computation accuracy are more suitable for numerical simulation of automotive external flow field.

Abstract Flow-induced vibration of a single cylinder and two cylinders in tandem and side-by-side configurations is experimentally investigated in this paper in the subcritical regime. The natural frequency of the system varied from 8.8 Hz to 46.2 Hz. The mass ratio, m*, ranged between 158 and 643 while the damping ratio, ζ, between 0.0005 and 0.009. The pairs of cylinders present a spacing ratio of 1.26 (P/D and L/D). In all cases, one and both cylinders (BV) were free to vibrate. Experiments were performed in an aerodynamic channel with a constant height and a variable width, for the evaluation of the influence of the blockage ratio (BR), using accelerometers and hot wire anemometry. The reference velocity, measured at the entrance of the test section was used to calculate the reduced velocity, Vr = U/fnD, with values from 4 to 132 and the Reynolds number between 3 × 103 and 8 × 104. The root-mean-square-values of the displacement amplitudes, Y/D, were obtained through the integration of the acceleration signals. Fourier and continuous wavelets were employed in the analysis. For a single cylinder free to vibrate, the higher amplitudes occur at two distinct reduced velocities, associated with the vibration modes of the cylinder. The vibration amplitude of a single cylinder increased as the blockage ratio increased, decreasing for the highest blockage ratio investigated. For the case of cylinders in tandem, the presence of the fixed cylinder in the wake of the cylinder free to vibrate amplifies the vibration response at high reduced velocities. When the blockage ratio is increased, a sudden increase in the vibration amplitude is observed. When both cylinders are free to vibrate, the relation between the natural frequencies of both cylinders influences the response amplitudes. In the case with two cylinders side-by-side, the vibration amplitude remains similar to a single cylinder, but when both cylinders are free to vibrate, the presence and the influence of flow bistability is observed.

This paper studied a concept of micromixer with a synthetic jet placed at the bottom of a rectangular channel. Due to periodic ejections from and suctions into the channel, the fluids are mixed effectively. To study the effects of the inlet velocity, the jet intensity and frequency, and the jet location on the mixing efficiency, 3-D numerical simulations of the micromixer have been carried out. It has been found that when the jet intensity and the frequency are fixed, the mixing efficiency increases when Re<50, and decreases when Re>50 with the best mixing efficiency achieved at Re=50. When the ratio of the jet velocity magnitude to the inlet velocity is taken as 10 and the jet frequency is 100Hz, the mixing index reaches the highest value. It has also been found that to get better mixing efficiency, the orifice of the synthetic jet should be asymmetrically located away from the channel’s centerline.
