Palladium catalysts have been used to study the hydrogenation of 1-phenyl-2-butene-1-ol which is accompanied by several side reactions considered to be acid-catalysed. Another model reaction studied was dehydration and subsequent hydrogenation or hydrogenolysis of 1-phenyl-1,3-propanediol to 3-phenyl-1-propanol, accompanied by formation of propylbenzene. The dehydration and propylbenzene formation can be again classified as acid-catalysed reactions. Another one is methanolysis of styrene oxide taking place under conditions of liquid phase hydrogenation due to the acid properties of Pd-H systems. Hydrogenation activity of Pd catalysts was tested by hydrogenation of cyclohexene. Sixteen Pd catalysts on different supports and with different content of active component were used, their activity and selectivity was determined and the effect of variable parameters in the synthesis of these catalysts on the activity and selectivity is discussed.

Background: Plants of genus Cichorium are known for their therapeutic and nutraceutical properties determined by a wealth of phytochemical substances contained in the whole plant. The aim of this paper was to characterize the metabolic profiles of local Salento chicory (Cichorium intybus L.) varieties (“Bianca”, “Galatina”, “Leccese”, and “Otranto”) in order to describe their metabolites composition together with possible bioactivity and health beneficial properties. Methods: The investigation was performed by 1H-NMR spectroscopy and Multivariate Analysis (MVA), by which the metabolic profiles of the samples were easily obtained and compared. Results: The supervised Partial Least Squares Discriminant Analysis (PLS-DA) analysis showed as “Bianca” and “Galatina” samples grouped together separated by “Leccese” and “Otranto” varieties. A different content of free amino acids and organic acids was observed among the varieties. In particular a high content of cichoric and monocaffeoyl tartaric acid was observed for the “Leccese” variety. The presence of secondary metabolites adds significant interest in the investigation of Cichorium inthybus, as this vegetable may benefit human health when incorporated into the diet. Conclusions: The 1H-NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy) based characterization of Salento chicory varieties allowed us to determine the potential usefulness and nutraceutical properties of the product, also providing a method to guarantee its authenticity on a molecular scale.

Group discussions were conducted, in five different occupational categories, in a medium-sized Swedish town. The occupational areas were media, politics, business, culture and civil service. An analysis is presented of how the interviewees expressed their alcohol habits in serious speech as compared to humorous speech. The participants' statements concerning their own alcohol consumption are related to expressions of what are called modulations in systemic functional linguistics. These form part of the ideational component of language, which concerns the way we communicate experience. Our choice of modulations demonstrates our attitude to the conditions that we describe regulate our ability to act. In serious speech, the speakers tend to value cautious drinking, setting sharp limits to how and when the use of alcohol is appropriate. As regards humorous speech, however, the situation is to a large extent the opposite: the interviewees picture themselves as under external constraints in connection to alcohol. The issues where we find humour are also where we find controversy in serious speech. The differences of opinion that arise, concerning everyday habits and the role model one represents as a parent, give rise to a number of jokes. The parts of serious discource that concern other people display a very different content, having to do with drinking too much, not being able to handle one's liquor consumption and not being permitted to drink alcohol – a content reflected in humorous form when the interviewees talk about themselves.

Three medium carbon Cr-Mn-Mo structural steels with different content of alloying elements were studied. The austenite transformation during continuous cooling was investigated using dilatometer and metallographic analysis. The CCT diagrams were plotted showing the effect of the increased alloying elements content and B and Nb micro-alloying on the hardenability of the studied steels. The hardness dependences on the cooling rate were obtained.

In traditional symbol-level network coding (SLNC)-based cooperative content distribution approaches, they ignore nodes in the vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) having various network-coded content pieces and distinct levels of interests and selfishness for different kinds of content data, which further prevents these vehicular nodes from forwarding their content information to other nodes. With these approaches, these nodes suffer from the low ratio and the long latency to receive all content information. In this paper, based on distinct levels of node interests and selfishness on different content information, we first categorize vehicular nodes into four classes, that is, the destination, intermediate, irrelevant and overhearing ones and then designate their associated credit-based incentive approaches. Second, we modify the flow of traditional SLNC-based cooperative content distribution operations and propose the content bitmap to realize the difference of network-coded content pieces among vehicular nodes. Further, we rigidly combine the proposed credit-based incentive approach with the modified SLNC-based cooperative content distribution operations in SocialCode to encourage all classes of vehicular nodes to rise their incentives for sharing content data in the cooperative content distribution process. Finally, we perform NS-2 simulations on a street map of downtown Taipei, Taiwan to exhibit the high efficiency of SocialCode over related credit-based incentive approaches by analyzing the following performance metrics, that is, average decoding percentage, file downloading delay and credits, with respect to different file sizes and total numbers of vehicular nodes. As the best knowledge we have, SocialCode is one of the first few researches that works on the integration between the credit-based incentive protocol and the SLNC-based cooperative content distribution.
