The influence of the natural hydraulic lime-based grout on the dynamic behaviour of injected multi-leaf stone masonry elements is discussed in the paper. Shaking table experiments on two stone masonry buildings, tested before and after grout injection, have been performed. The paper focuses on the analysis of both the recorded accelerations and related displacements, at the bottom and at each further storey. This leads to evaluate the stiffness of the unstrengthened and injected structures. The input at increasing PGA allowed the stiffness decay to be studied, simulating a gradual damaging of the structures. These results were also interpreted in the light of both computed frequencies and mode shapes. Finally, the comparison among these results, obtained from all the models, allows to deepen the knowledge concerning the effects induced by the lime-based grout injection and on its capability to modify the dynamic behaviour, when intervening on a damaged (repairing) or on an undamaged (strengthening) structure.

Most of the human casualties in past earthquakes were attributed to the collapse of buildings, particularly masonry constructions in developing countries. Most of these buildings are categorized into “Non-Engineered Construction.” In effect, these structure are spontaneously and informally constructed in various countries in a traditional manner without any or with little intervention in their design by qualified architects and engineers. Unfortunately, these types of buildings have been extensively constructed in most of the seismic prone areas in developing countries. Therefore, the safety of “Non-Engineered Construction” has become one of the most urgent issues in recent years. The concrete hollow block (CHB) masonry structures have recently become common residential structures in the Philippines. A full-scale shaking table test on CHBmasonry structures of Philippine ordinary houses was conducted in Japan. This experiment aims to acquiring a better understanding of the behavior of these structures during major earthquakes, and its results will be used to produce simple seismic evaluation methods as awareness tools, and to disseminate information on safer construction of houses in the Philippines.

Damping is one of the important issues related to isolated structures, including the newly proposed low-cost spring-asphalt isolation system. In this study, the damping properties of the system in terms of displacement dependence, frequency dependence and temperature dependence were studied by a cyclic simple shear experiment. Then, the direct least-square method was used to identify the damping properties from the experimental data. Furthermore, to validate the effectiveness of the damping device, a modal analysis was conducted based on multi-dimensional shaking table tests. The results indicate that (1) the hysteretic curves are similar to an ellipse, which means that the asphalt shows characteristics of viscoelastic materials; (2) the damping properties are positively related to the loading frequency and inversely related to the temperature and displacement; and (3) asphalt can provide adequate damping and reduce the displacements of the superstructure by nearly half. On the basis of the experimental test results, an analysis of the modal information with multi-dimensional input is also presented.

The document concerns with the design and study of a large masonry model of Hagia Irene in Istanbul. The goals of experimentation were to acquire a deeper structural behaviour knowledge than that possible to acquire with numerical models only and to assess the effectiveness of the consolidation works foreseen on Hagia Irene. The scale factor chosen is equal to 1:10. The tests were arranged into two different phases: for not reinforced and reinforced scale model .The displacements of the markers placed on the structure were registered by an innovative monitoring technique measuring 3D motion time histories.

The seismic performance of timber-framed structures filled with stones and earth mortar has been analyzed by introducing the structural subscales (cell, wall, house) at which monotonic and cyclic loadings were considered. This article aims to present the dynamic behavior of a house as determined through shaking table tests. Based on this experimental multiscale analysis, this paper confirms that timbered masonry structures offer effective seismic resistance; moreover, such a comprehensive analysis helps enhance understanding of the seismic-resistant behavior of timber-framed structures with infill. This paper also aids ongoing development of a numerical tool intended to predict the seismic-resistant behavior of this type of structure.

Abstract. Turkey and neighborhood countries like Greece and Iran are situated on an active earthquake region. Masonry type structures are very common on these countries, especially on the rural areas. During the last earthquakes, several masonry type houses were collapsed, causing loss of life and property. Strengthening methods of masonry houses were discussed in this study. The paper summarizes the results of a experimental programme carried out on models, scaled 1/10, of one-storey masonry buildings. First specimen tested was the reference specimen and used for comparison purposes. Other specimens contained several strengthening strategies. A total of 9 specimens were tested. The results allow to assess the efficiency of the various strengthening techniques employed.
