Electrochromic composite film consisting of TiO2, chitosan (CS) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were fabricated on quartz and FTO substrates by the layer-by-layer self-assembly method (LbL). The multilayer film was characterized by UV-vis spectrum, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and chronoamperometric (CA) and in situ spectral electrochemicalmeasurements. The composite material shows high electrochromic performance, with the optical contrast of 11.5% and coloration efficiency of 21.7 cm2/C at 800 nm. The results indicate great promise for the TiO2-based film as a potential material in electrochromic devices.

An ECD based on electrochromic poly(1H-benzo[g]indole) was fabricated. The color of this ECD can switch between green and navy blue with good optical contrast, high coloration efficiency, fast response time, better optical memory and long-term stability.

Electrochromic devices (ECDs) that allow the modulation of light transmission are very attractive in the research field of energy saving. Here all-in-one gel switchable ECDs based on mixed-valence electroactive compounds were developed. The use of the thienoviologen/ferrocene couple as cathode and anode, respectively, leads to a significant electrochromic band in the visible range (550–800 nm), with a color change from yellow to green, and to a lower band in the NIR region (1000–1700 nm), due to the presence of one electroactive-chromic species. Replacement of the electroactive ferrocene with a fluorene-diarylamine electroactive-chromic species, allows to extend and intensify the absorption in the NIR region, thus affording modulation of the solar radiation from 500 up to 2200 nm. High optical contrast, fast coloration and bleaching times and outstanding coloration efficiencies were measured for all observed absorption bands upon the application of small potential differences (1.4 V < DV < 2 V).

Four new bis(tpy) unimers with different linkers between the thieno[3,2-b]thiophene-2,5-diyl central unit and terpyridine-4′-yl (tpy) end-groups: no linker (Tt), ethynediyl (TtE), 1,4-phenylene (TtPh) and 2,2′-bithophene-5,5′-diyl (TtB) are prepared, characterized, and assembled with Fe2+ ions to metallo-supramolecular polymers (Fe-MSPs). The Fe-MSP films prepared by spin-casting on Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) glass are characterized by atomic force microscope (AFM) microscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and UV/vis spectroscopy and studied for their electrochromism and effect of the unimer structure on their electrochromic performance. Of the studied MSPs, Fe-Tt shows the highest optical contrast as well as coloration efficiency (CE = 641 cm2 C−1) and the fastest optical response. This makes it an excellent candidate for possible use in electrochromic devices.

An aqueous suspension of WO3/PEDTS nanoparticles is facilely prepared, giving the hybrid electrochromic devices an enhanced optical contrast and electrochemical stability.
