The original version of Attitudes toward Mathematics Inventory (ATMI) was adapted and translated into Arabic language and administered to middle school students in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The data were analysed to establish the reliability and construct validity as well as the factor structure of the instrument. Our results showed that four factor model was the best fit using confirmatory factor analysis. The findings from this study indicated that the translated version of the inventory can be effectively used in Arabic speaking countries. As part of the Ministry of Education (MoE) language policies, the UAE government made Arabic language a compulsory subject for non-speakers in all private schools. The UAE government stipulates that private schools must offer a core programme in Arabic as a second language. Thus, non-Arab expatriates are required to study Arabic as an Additional Language (AAL) from Grade 1 to Grade 9. This qualitative case study aims to explore the attitudes of parents towards the implementation of Arabic as an Additional Language (AAL) in one of the private British schools in Dubai, wherein AAL has been rated ‘Acceptable’. This exploration is a snapshot of attitudes held by parents as key stakeholders in the triad of school, teachers, and parents’ partnership towards the learning and teaching of AAL- whether approving or disapproving of it. It will illuminate some of the arising issues related to potential gaps between the implementation of AAL (practice) and the MoE framework (Theory). Ultimately, this paper aims to uncover challenges and proffer recommendations. To enhance the implementation of AAL in schools, this paper will propose potential parental engagement initiatives that can yield valuable policy decisions.

Abstract This study examines the news selection processes followed by fact-checking organizations in the Middle East, specifically Egypt, Jordan, and the United Arab Emirates, and gatekeeping such organizations face while working under authoritarian rule. By reviewing fact-checked news posted on the Facebook pages of six Arabic language organizations: Da Begad, HereszTruth, Fatabyyano, Matsad2sh, MisbarFC, and Saheeh Masr, this study manually analyzes about 5,000 fact-checked news stories to understand the extent of political fact-checking performed on Arab presidents, heads of government, and rulers, along with the most verified news topics. Results show that organizations in the Middle East rarely fact-check Arab rulers or refute their claims, while their news selection process prioritizes human interest topics. The study suggests that Arab fact-checkers resort to self-censorship due to gatekeeping influences that impact the region’s media climate.

The offering of Arabic in Management and Science (MSU) is not new, even since its inception. It is in line with government policy through the Ministry of Education Malaysia to promote Arabic as an international professional field. To date, there have been no specific studies related to the journey of Arabic teaching and learning at MSU as there are no such requirements today. Therefore, this study was conducted by those with a background in Arabic seeking to determine what factors are likely to be of interest to MSU students in Arabic during the current semester of September 2019. Researcher adopt a library study through a qualitative approach that leads to text analysis through application of methods descriptive surveys, a set of online surveys using google sheets and distributed to 30 students who took Arabic from a variety of programs and faculties. This study shows that the dominant factor is the desire to learn a new language among students compared to other factors such as refining their knowledge, working in the Arab world, understanding the Quran, responding to challenges and fun teaching aids. This study also records some of the important factors that influence this factor: gender, semester of study, program, faculty, age and subject. This proves that students' interest in the subject matter of the Arabic is not only due to certain factors, but also by other influences which also play an important role in the formation of the student's own interest.
