The article discusses the fundamentals of traceological forensic analysis of visual artworks within both the framework of forensic traceological examination and comprehensive forensic research with the participation of expert-traceologists. Works of art are investigated to identify them, diagnose their condition, and establish the origin of various negative changes. Forensic traceology methods can play an essential role in the controversial attributions of paintings, drawings, and sculptures. The necessity and feasibility of developing a modern forensic traceological research methodology of fine artworks are substantiated.

There is a new area flourishing within qualitative research based on methods using all forms of art: music, theatre, visual arts, and literature. In this paper we present an overview of the basic features of arts-based research; emphasizing on their meaning on education research, on the freedom of expression given to the participants in the research, and on the method the researcher applies to evaluate the collected data. We then present an arts-based research case study where the research questions relate to teachers’ reactions to the use of smartphones by students in the classroom. In this case study, teachers, especially those working on secondary education, are invited to portray their thoughts, emotions, and images that respond to these questions by painting them on a paper using markers. The findings show that the majority of the teachers are negative about the children using their smartphone in the classroom, along with evidence for teachers’ emotional response and how to confront the phenomenon.

The following study of selected works of art by Zulkiflee Anwar Haque or better known as Zunar, a Malaysian political cartoonist from his book ‘Twit Twit Cincin’. This study is guided by the visual rhetoric theory that has three areas of study - nature, function and evaluation. The study looks at selected cartoons that addressed political figures, politics and social issues. The research looked at the way the caricatures portrayed Malaysian politicians, his perspectives on the political and social issues and how these issues were addressed. The researcher also looked at metaphors used by the cartoonist to communicate his ideas to the audiences. The study found that Zunar’s portrait of Malaysian politicians is not always positive. He is critical but not in an inflammatory way. The metaphors found in Zunar’s work are found to be common themes and simple to understand. They are also very well-known, visually appealing and a tool to tie his messages together and to get his ideas across. Zunar has managed to resist the oppression of the state through his cartoons while looking at institutional reform, puts forth an alternative articulation of history and nation that juxtapose the current government. The article considers methods of involving artificial intelligence in artistic practices. Based on the analysis of ways to use this technology in visual arts and music, the basic principles of working with artificial intelligence technology are identified, including: imitation of historical art, implemented in projects The Next Rembrandt and Choral; generative art, which is found in the works “Hyperbolic Composition І” and “Hyperbolic Composition ІІ” of S. Eaton and also in the AIVA program (Artificial Intelligence Virtual Artist). The importance of the mechanisms of neurobiology in the process of working with artificial intelligence on the example of the project “Neural Zoo” of S. Crespo, Iamus program, in which the development of musical material is based on the principle of evolution, is stated. In the application Endel and in the opera “Emotionally intelligent” Artificially Intelligent Brainwave Opera» of E. Perlman, a neural network is used to read information about the human condition and its further processing for modification into a sound landscape or image. The development of artificial intelligence and its use in artistic practices opens up new opportunities, expanding both the field of authors of artistic content and attracting new audience. This phenomenon provokes many issues, including: the ability to think artificially of artificial intelligence, the ability to create works of art without human intervention, as well as issues related to copyright.

This essay examines the much-contested “neuroscientific turn” in art history, taking the cues of the best of the turn while rejecting its false starts. The most promising transdisciplinary encounters spanning the brain sciences and the humanities begin from the premise that human experience is embodied, but the “body” itself is interwoven across biological, ecological, phenomenological, social and cultural planes. Certain media artworks critically engaged with neuroscience productively model such an approach. Taking Mariko Mori’s brainwave interface and multimedia installation Wave UFO (1999–2002) as a case study, the author explores how works of art may complicate and augment brain science research as well as its dissemination into other social and cultural arenas.

The research examined the relevance of the visual arts curriculum content with the view of assessing the extent to which it equips pre-service visual arts teachers with the knowledge and skills required for effective teaching. The study adopted a descriptive case study design. Data were collected from three purposively selected National Teacher Colleges (NTCs), six tutors and 90 final year pre-service visual arts teachers participated in this study. The research findings showed that teacher education institutions are inadequately preparing pre-service visual arts teachers because of the gaps in the Visual Arts Curriculum (VAC) used in NTCs. Some of these gaps are attributed to the structure of the visual arts curriculum tutors use in NTCs. The visual arts curriculum lacks explicit visual arts assessment strategies; it has wide and combined visual arts content to be covered within a short period of two years and the limited knowledge of the available art materials, tools and equipment. The research recommended the restructuring of the VAC to accommodate more practical; and the introduction of specialized knowledge in the visual arts education (VAE) to enable tutors decipher practical knowledge from the theory studied so as to adopt an integrated approach in VAE curriculum.
