Introduction:Fibromyalgia is an entity with idiopathic etiology affecting 2-4% of population. It is a frequent cause of disability, its most usual symptoms being diffuse pain and fatigue. There is evidence that alterations in several chemical and hormonal factors could explain changes in pain perception mechanisms, accounting for some of the symptoms. However, the high incidence of comorbid psychiatric disorders tends to indicate there is an associated psychopathology in fibromyalgia patients, especially regarding affectivity. Some authors believe fibromyalgia could be considered an evolution of the concept of neurasthenia already defined by Beard in 1860.Materials and methods:Comprehensive review of the scientific literature (Medline, Psychoinfo, Medex) on fibromyalgia and pain mechanisms published over the last three years.Results:Mood regulation has been linked to pain perception through neurotransmitters and brain structures. Also, several studies state that depression changes the neuroendocrine, immune and processing regulation of pain.However, some researchers believe there is enough evidence for a psychiatric approach to fibromyalgia, as there is a relationship between depression and fibromyalgia. Thus, fibromyalgia could be considered an affective disorder.Conclusion:Current research does not clearly show whether pain precedes affective alteration or the other way round, or whether mood and pain depend on common mechanisms.

More than ten new species of colonial volvocine algae were described in world literature during recent years. In present review, the published data on taxonomy, geographical distribution and the species problem in this group of algae, mainly from the genera Gonium, Pandorina, Eudorina, and Volvox, are critically discussed. There are both cosmopolitan volvocalean species and species with local or disjunct distribution. On the other hand, the description of new cryptic taxa in some genera of the colonial family Volvocaceae, such as Pandorina and Volvox, complicates the preparation of a comprehensive review on their geography.

Abstract The article presents the military cooperation between the King of Galician-Volhynian Ruthenia, Daniel Romanowicz, and the Dukes of Mazovia, Konrad and his son Siemowit. The alliance, based as a counterweight for the cooperation between the King of Hungary and the Piast princes of Lesser Poland, who were trying to conquer Ruthenia and dominate all Piast principalities in then fragmented Poland. It lasted for several decades from the 1220’s to the 1260’s and was primarly aimed at mutual protection against the invasions of the pagan Yotvingians and supporting each other in armed conflicts. The text contains an analysis of war expeditions, tactics and ways of support that were given by both sides of the allianace. It is a new point of view on this aspect of political strategy of both sides that in some ways defined the regional situation. Ruthenians granted masovian Piasts some mobile and political uncommited support in fight with their relatives in Poland, and also secured their border with the Yotvingians. On the other hand, masovian knights were an additional strike force in ruthenian plundering expeditions to Yotvingia. The research was based on the analysis of preserved historical sources and scientific literature using historical methodology.

Deaths occurring among agitated or violent individuals subjected to physical restraint have been attributed to positional asphyxia. Restraint in the prone position has been shown to alter respiratory and cardiac physiology, although this is thought not to be to the degree that would cause asphyxia in a healthy, adult individual. This comprehensive review identifies and summarizes the current scientific literature on prone position and restraint, including experiments that assess physiology on individuals restrained in a prone position. Some of these experimental approaches have attempted to replicate situations in which prone restraint would be used. Overall, most findings revealed that individuals subjected to physical prone restraint experienced a decrease in ventilation and/or cardiac output (CO) in prone restraint. Metabolic acidosis is noted with increased physical activity, in restraint-associated cardiac arrest and simulated encounters. A decrease in ventilation and CO can significantly worsen acidosis and hemodynamics. Given these findings, deaths associated with prone physical restraint are not the direct result of asphyxia but are due to cardiac arrest secondary to metabolic acidosis compounded by inadequate ventilation and reduced CO. As such, the cause of death in these circumstances would be more aptly referred to as “prone restraint cardiac arrest” as opposed to “restraint asphyxia” or “positional asphyxia.”

Tomato production in Trinidad has suffered considerable losses in yield and fruit quality due to infections of hitherto surmised etiology. In order to develop strategies for controlling viral diseases in tomato, the relative distribution and incidence of seven viruses that commonly infect tomato were determined. Of the 362 samples tested, Potato yellow mosaic Trinidad virus (PYMTV) was found in every farm except two and was present at relatively high incidence throughout the country. Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) and Tobacco etch virus (TEV) were found in fewer farms and at lower incidences while the other viruses were absent. Single infections of either virus were more common than double infections and multiple infections were rare but present. The results indicated that PYMTV is the predominant and most important viral pathogen in tomato production systems in Trinidad; however, begomovirus disease management strategies will also have to accommodate controls Accepted for publication 10 January 2006. Newton's Opticks is a classic of scientific literature which is readily accessible to the general reader and from which his powers of observation, measurement and deduction may be recognized unequivocally. The fourth (1730) edition, last reprinted by Dover Publications in 1979, includes a Preface by I. Bernard Cohen, a Foreword by Albert Einstein and an Introduction by Sir Edmund Whittaker. More recently A. Rupert Hall's All Was Light: An Introduction to Newton's Opticks 1 provides a comprehensive review and analysis of the book, its preparation and subsequent reception. The object of this note is to examine a small but significant part of Newton's work in the Opticks , that of his measurements of the thicknesses of air, water and muscovy glass (i.e. muscovite) films and their corresponding interference colours, which appear in Parts I and II of the second book.

One of the chief characteristics of heritage speakers is that they range in proficiency from “overhearers” to “native” speakers. To date, the vast majority of linguistic and psycholinguistic studies have characterized the non-target-like linguistic abilities of heritage speakers as a product of incomplete acquisition and/or attrition due to reduced exposure and opportunities to use the language during childhood. This article focuses on the other side of the problem, emphasizing instead the high incidence of native-like abilities in adult heritage speakers. I illustrate this issue with recent experimental evidence from gender agreement in Spanish, a grammatical feature that is mastered at almost 100% accuracy in production by native speakers;yet it is one of the most difficult areas to master for non-native speakers, including near-natives.I discuss how age of acquisition and language-learning experience explain these effects.

Abstract A set of well defined signaling molecules responsible for normal functioning of human physiology including nitric oxide along with carbon monoxide and hydrogen sulphide are referred as “gasotransmitters”. Due to their involvement in almost every system of a human body, the care of highly sensitive organs using these molecules as drugs represents highly fascinating area of research. In connection with these interesting aspects, the applied aspects of these gaseous molecules in maintaining healthy eye and vision have been targeted in this review. Several examples of eye-droppers including NORMs like latanoprost and nipradiol, CORMs like CORM-3 and CORM-A1, and Hydrogen sulfide releasing system like GYY4137 have been discussed in this context. Therefore the relation of these trio-gasotransmitters with the ophthalmic homeostasis on one hand, and de-infecting role on the other hand has been mainly highlighted. Some molecular systems capable of mimicking gasotransmitter action have also been introduced in connection with the titled theme.

Over the course of his 14-year career at Chicago's Field Museum of Natural History, artist and engraver John Conrad Hansen rendered hundreds of beautiful and accurate scientific illustrations of animals – mostly extinct fossil vertebrates. His principal media were oil paintings, pencil, pen-and-ink and wash drawings. Many of his illustrations have been published in the scientific literature. His oil paintings, on the other hand, were made for display alongside specimens in the Field Museum's exhibits. Despite the quality of Hansen's full-colour reconstructions, few of them have been seen outside the Museum. A small, representative sample of his work is reproduced here, along with a brief account of his troubled life and career.

Summary Objective: To summarize the best papers in the field of Knowledge Representation and Management (KRM). Methods: A comprehensive review of medical informatics literature was performed to select some of the most interesting papers of KRM and natural language processing (NLP) published in 2013. Results: Four articles were selected, one focuses on Electronic Health Record (EHR) interoperability for clinical pathway personalization based on structured data. The other three focus on NLP (corpus creation, de-identification, and co-reference resolution) and highlight the increase in NLP tools performances. Conclusion: NLP tools are close to being seriously concurrent to humans in some annotation tasks. Their use could increase drastically the amount of data usable for meaningful use of EHR.

A young science serves its purpose if it leads not only to new knowledge, but to new insights and concepts. This article opens with examples to illustrate some former thinking that the introduction of pharmacogenetic has overcome. Pharmacogenetic case histories from discovery to the present illustrate the interlocking of observations, technical advances, and changing concepts. There are striking biological similarities between pharmacogenetics and those inborn factors that cause resistance to infectious disease: Both represent person-to-person variations that may help the survival of populations, one when facing massive toxic exposures, the other when facing plagues and epidemics. Thus pharmacogenetics represents a biologically necessary variability of the defenses against chemical intruders, and this includes drugs. While this variability is desirable, drug toxicity occurring on the basis of this variability must be avoided. The most successful defendants against toxicity due to polymorphic (ie, high incidence) variants should be the designers of new drugs. The only defender concerned with rare variants can be the attentive clinician.
