Autism comorbidities and social deficits in children aged 7–14

IntroductionAlong with other neurodevelopmental disorders, recently, interest in studying the comorbidities of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) has grown. According to previous findings many ASD children often do experience a number of comorbid medical conditions and about 60–70% of them present with additional neuropsychiatric Disorders.AimWe aimed to examine the comorbidities of autistic children and identify whether or not the comorbidities affect their social and behavioral profile.MethodsOne hundred and seven children with ASD were surveyed. For all subjects, their parents were asked to complete three forms as the ATEC (autism treatment evaluation checklist), Vineland Social Maturity and a checklist for general and biomedical information.We then compared the subjects as two groups with and without comorbidities.ResultsFifty one (44.3 %) of subjects had at least one comorbid condition, and thirty six (31.3%) had at least one additional neuropsychiatric condition. Children with comorbidities showed significant lower score in social quotient against the others without comorbidities (p < 0.05, CI 1.6: 20.5). There was a significant correlation between number of comorbidites and physical-behavioral profile of children (r = 0.172, p < 0.05). Comparison of means between two groups showed a trend of higher severity in all dimensions of ATEC in Children with comorbidities but not significantly.ConclusionOur results extended the autism literature in association of comorbidities with lower performance in social and behavioral issues.

Abstract Background During the COVID-19 pandemic, children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and neurotypical siblings of children with ASD and their parents and caregivers have been required to change their daily schedule. In this study, we focused on siblings of children with ASD to reveal their adjustment to their daily life. In addition, we examined their caregivers’ stress. Methods An online Qualtrics survey was given to caregivers of children with ASD on February, 2021 at Thomas Jefferson University in the United States. First, we assessed the severity of children with ASD. In addition, we examined how their neurotypical siblings adjusted to their daily life using the validated Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). Moreover, we analyzed caregivers’ stress and their socioeconomic status. Results Fifteen caregivers responded to the survey. 42% of children with ASD had behavioral issues beforehand, 80% of which showed worse behaviors during this pandemic. Siblings of children with ASD showed higher scores of difficulties in adapting to new routines during COVID-19. Some caregivers lost their jobs and caregivers of those with behavioral issues reported stress levels that were 4.4 points higher on the scale. Conclusions Siblings of children with ASD and their caregivers are facing difficulties in their daily life during this pandemic. Appropriate support systems for children with ASD, their siblings, and their parents and caregivers may help them with their better adjustment. Key messages Siblings of children with ASD show difficulties in adjusting, and their caregivers feel more stress during COVID-19 pandemic.

This descriptive study evaluates the speech disfluencies of 8 verbal children between 3 and 5 years of age with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Speech samples were collected for each child during standardized interactions. Percentage and types of disfluencies observed during speech samples are discussed. Although they did not have a clinical diagnosis of stuttering, all of the young children with ASD in this study produced disfluencies. In addition to stuttering-like disfluencies and other typical disfluencies, the children with ASD also produced atypical disfluencies, which usually are not observed in children with typically developing speech or developmental stuttering. Alterations of tactile processing have long been identified in autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, the extent to which these alterations are disorder-specific, rather than disorder-general, and how they relate to the core symptoms of each disorder, remains unclear. We measured and compared tactile detection, discrimination and order judgment thresholds between a large sample of children with ASD, ADHD, ASD + ADHD combined and typically developing controls. The pattern of results suggested that while difficulties with tactile detection and order judgement were more common in children with ADHD, difficulties with tactile discrimination were more common in children with ASD. Strikingly, subsequent correlation analyses found that the disorder-specific alterations suggested by the group comparisons were also exclusively related to the core symptoms of each respective disorder. These results suggest that disorder-specific alterations of lower-level sensory processes exist and are specifically related to higher-level clinical symptoms of each disorder.

Children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are at risk for oral health disparities. With the dramatic rise in ASD prevalence to 1 in 54 children, it is likely that an increasing number of dental practitioners will encounter or be asked to treat children with ASD. This paper reviews explanations related to the increasing prevalence of ASD, provides reasons why children with ASD are at increased risk for poor oral health, and discusses unique interprofessional collaborations between dental practitioners and occupational therapists. Occupational therapists and dentists can work together to plan modifications to the dental environment or adapt dental protocols to reduce some of the barriers encountered by those with ASD, provide desensitization strategies before the clinic visit, or help a child with emotional regulation during clinical treatments.

Background. Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are complex disorders where the pathogenesis is not fully understood. Several proinflammatory and immunoinflammatory disturbances have been observed in the etiology of ASD. There is, however, limited knowledge on variations of adipokines in ASD. The present study aimed to analyze the serum levels of resistin, visfatin, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) in children with ASD in relation to body weight, gender, and ASD severity level. Method. In total, 30 children with ASD (mean age: 7.72±2.65 y; range; 4–12 y) and 30 healthy children (mean age: 8.4±2.66 y; range: 4–12 y), including males and females, were matched for age, gender, and body mass index (BMI). Serum samples were collected, and visfatin, resistin, and TNF-α serum levels were measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit. Result. Serum visfatin, resistin, and TNF-α levels in children with ASD were significantly higher than that in the healthy patients (p<0.05). Two significant correlations were found: a correlation between resistin and visfatin with TNF-α in children with ASD (R = 0.8 and R = 0.62, resp.) and a correlation between resistin and visfatin in children with ASD (R = 0.66). Conclusion. Higher TNF-α, resistin, and visfatin levels were found in children with ASD in comparison with controls, suggesting that elevated levels of serum proinflammatory agents may be implicated in the pathophysiology of ASD.

Children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) have a less definitive hand preference for certain actions as opposed to neurotypical children. Moreover, left-handedness in children with ASD has been associated with more echolalia. The objective was to conduct a screening of potential risk and associated features for autism spectrum disorders, among which the hand preference of the child. The current aim is to compare the perceived handedness of children with autism spectrum disorders with that of children with other psychiatric pathologies.MethodsEight hundred and forty-two parents completed our risk and associated features screening questionnaire. Out of these, 494 answered the question regarding handedness (209 had children diagnosed with ASD). This asked the parents to state how they perceived their child's handedness. An ADOS assessment has been conducted for 170 of the children whose parents were included in the study, based on clinical relevance for the case. The data were analysed using Excel and SPSS 22.0. For the comparisons, Chi2 and the Kruskal–Wallis test were used.ResultsChildren with ASD had more left-handedness (χ2(2) = 12.54, P = 0.002). There were no differences between boys and girls in terms of perceived handedness in any of the groups. There were no differences in the ADOS scores according to the perceived hand laterality (χ2(2) = 0.58, P = 0.74).ConclusionRightward-asymmetry in regions of corpus callosum has been reported to correlate with symptoms severity in ASD. The finding of different perceived handedness in children with ASD versus children with other psychiatric pathologies is useful for designing appropriate, individualized training programs for motor therapy.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

Children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) struggle to develop appropriate social skills, which can lead to later social rejection, isolation, and mental health concerns. Educators play an important role in supporting and monitoring social skill development for children with ASD, but the tools used by educators are often tedious, lack suitable sensitivity, provide limited information to plan interventions, and are time-consuming. Therefore, we conducted a study to evaluate the use of a sensor system to measure social proximity between three children with ASD and their peers in an inclusive preschool setting. We compared video-coded data with sensor data using point-by-point agreement to measure the accuracy of the sensor system. Results suggest that the sensor system can adequately measure social proximity between children with ASD and their peers. The next steps for sensor system validation are discussed along with clinical and educational implications, limitations, and future research directions.

Abstract Study question Does the risk of neurodevelopmental disorders differ between singletons born after various assisted reproductive techniques (ART) and spontaneous conception (SC) until young adulthood? Summary answer ART children had a slightly increased rate of learning and motor functioning disorders, autism spectrum disorders (ASD), and ADHD and conduct disorders. What is known already Studies on the impact of ART on offspring have reported both increased risk and comparable incidences of neurodevelopmental disorders between ART and SC offspring. The most studied neurodevelopmental disorders with ART are autism spectrum disorders (ASD.) There is, however, no consensus on the risk of ASD for ART children. The risk for other neurodevelopmental disorders, like attention-deficit hyperactivity disorders (ADHD) or tic disorder among ART children, is also a debated issue, as studies are scarce. Study design, size, duration A Nordic register-based cohort study including all singleton live births (N = 5 076 444) after ART (n = 116 909) or SC (n = 4 959 535) between 1995 and 2014 in Denmark and Finland, 1995 and 2015 in Sweden; and 2005 and 2015 in Norway. Children with intellectual disability (ICD-10: F70-F79) are excluded. The children are followed up to young adulthood (the year 2014 in Denmark and Finland, and 2015 in Norway and Sweden). Participants/materials, setting, methods Offspring outcomes were defined as following ICD-10 diagnoses: learning and motor functioning disorders (F80-83), ASD (F84), ADHD and conduct disorders (F90-F92), and tic disorders/Tourette (F95). We calculated crude and adjusted hazard ratios (HR) for neurodevelopmental diagnoses using Cox regression. Adjustments were made for the country, maternal age at the delivery, parity, smoking, and maternal psychiatric morbidity. Main results and the role of chance The cumulative incidences of neurodevelopmental disorders in the cohort were 1.74% for F90-F92, 1.40% for F80-83, 0.66% for F84, and 0.22% for F95. In crude Cox-regression ART children had an increased likelihood during the follow-up of being diagnosed with F84 (HR 1.12 [95% CI 1.04-1.21]) and F95 (HR 1.21 [95% CI 1.06-1.38]), but not with F80-83 (HR 1.01 [95% CI 0.96-1.07]) or F90-92 (HR 0.82 [95% CI 0.77-0.86]). After adjustments the likelihood was increased for F80-83 (HR 1.20 [95% CI 1.13-1.27]), F84 (HR 1.12 [95% CI 1.03-1.24]), and F90-92 (HR 1.09 [95% CI 1.04-1.19]), but nor for F95 (HR 1.13 [95% CI 0.99-1.30]). After adjustments, intracytoplasmic sperm injection children compared with in vitro fertilization children had similar likelihood during follow-up for F80-83 (1.06 [95% CI 0.89–1.25]), for F84 (HR 0.92 [95% CI 0.76–1.11]), for F90-92 (HR 0.96 [95% CI 0.83–1.12]), and for F95 (HR 1.16 [95% CI 0.83–1.63]). After adjustments, frozen embryo transfer children compared with fresh embryo transfer children had similar likelihood during follow-up for F80-83 (HR 1.11 [95% CI 0.90–1.37]), F84 (HR 0.98 [95% CI 0.76–1.27]), F90-92 (HR 0.96 [95% CI 0.78–1.19]), and F95 (HR 0.83 [95% CI 0.51–1.35]). Limitations, reasons for caution There may be residual confounding by unknown or unmeasured confounders. We lack information on possible confounders like the reason and length of infertility, maternal substance use other than self-reported smoking status, paternal age, and parental somatic morbidity. Additional limitations are differences in registration practice and data availability between study countries. Wider implications of the findings This is the largest singleton cohort and the first multinational study on the risk for neurodevelopmental disorders among ART children. While the rate of some neurodevelopmental disorders was increased among ART children, the absolute risk was moderate. The type of ART did not associate with the incidence of neurodevelopmental disorders. Trial registration number ISRCTN11780826

<p>In the article recent technologies of formation and development of social and communication skills in children with autism spectrum disorders are analyzed. A systematic review summarizes the most effective and verified interventions of support to socialization of children with ASD: applied behavior analysis (ABA); cognitive-behavioral training (CBT); social stories method; social skills training (SST). We pay special attention to virtual technologies and video simulations so these methods allow to form social skills in children with ASD more efficiently and psychologically safe. Problems and prospects of using virtual technologies for children with ASD needs are discussed.<strong> </strong>The specificity of Russian practical experience and researches in development of heuristic technologies of development of social communication of persons with ASD is described: animal-assisted therapy, somatosensory correction, author art therapy and folk forms of intervention. On the basis of analytical work it is concluded that the gap between theory and practice needs to be neutralized, when scientifically unfounded practical developments are introduced in helping autistic people and researches of scientists are not always verified in an empirical manner.</p>
