This textbook describes the equipment, observational techniques, and analysis used in the investigation of stellar photospheres. Now in its fourth edition, the text has been thoroughly updated and revised to be more accessible to students. Readers theater productions are meaningful expressions of creative pedagogy in higher education. This article presents the script of a readers theater called Identify This… A Readers Theater of Women's Voices, which was researched, written, and produced by undergraduate and graduate students in a women's studies class called Intersections of Race, Class, and Gender. Section one of the article reproduces the script of Identify This that was based on life history interviews with a diverse selection of women to illustrate intersectional identities. Section two briefly describes the essential elements of the process we used to create and perform Identify This.

AbstractI have used the 1.2-m telescope and coudé spectrograph of the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory for more than 30 years in a program of radial-velocity observations of binary stars. The program was begun with photographic plates as detectors, but for 20 years the primary detector has been the radial-velocity scanner, which cross-correlates stellar spectra with an artificial mask.Since some of the binaries under observation have periods of several years, the instrument’s stability is an important consideration. I have therefore been obliged to observe standard stars and asteroids to check its performance. These observations are of relevance to efforts to improve the IAU standard star system.I will describe the telescope, spectrograph and scanner, and will briefly discuss some of the results obtained for a selection of binary and multiple stars.

The purpose of the article is to outline the specifics of the discourse of information psychological war on the material of fiction.As a result of consistent interpretation of the key concepts as the basis of the linguo-philosophical aspect of the study, it is concluded that information psychological war as a socio-and linguo-cultural phenomenon responds to all the features and categories of discourse. The object of this research consists in the implementation of the information psychological war subtype, the dominant attribute of which is the material / object of study (a combination of aesthetic function with a number of social ones) and the content heterogeneity of the text as a condition for the potential realization of any discourses in it. The author raises an is sue about the scientific and ethical pro and contra of the research of fiction from the information psychological war perspective. The conclusion is made about the necessity of introducing the factor of “degree” of confrontation / struggle and, accordingly, the study of the fiction for the individual symptoms / features of information psychological war.The conditions and criteria for their establishment in specific practices are formulated.The article presents the targets of information psychological war in the discursive practices studied earlier by the author.In conclusion, the criteria for the selection of fiction texts in the aspect of information psychological war and the criteria for distinguishing information psychological war symptoms from social criticism are summarized.

Research is the framework for the development of human social and scientific progress. Foundations for improved scientific thinking is often established at the post-graduate level where students undertake independent investigations aimed at exploring a chosen topic within their chosen area of specialization. Irrespective of the discipline, institution, or topic chosen, post-graduate students often adopt specific research framework(s) and processes which involves selecting design(s) and data analysis procedure. This seemingly routine task has been the bane of many post-graduate students. This chapter focuses on research methodology involving the selection of appropriate design that aims to establish the general data collection and analyses procedures, selection of a sample from population, and discussion of findings in line with existing literature or controlled observation. This chapter provides suggestions for improving the research engagement process through the adoption of appropriate research design and selection of statistical tool for data analysis.

This study aims to systematically evaluate the scoring errors made by psychologists in training, in the hopes of providing strong, empirically based guidelines to training programs. Survival analysis was used to determine the number of attempts required for graduate students to achieve proficiency in scoring standardized record forms from the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, Fourth Edition (WISC-IV). The results suggest that the majority of students will require at least six attempts prior to achieving proficiency in the standardized scoring procedure associated with the WISC-IV. The significant contribution of this study stems from its notably larger sample size ( N = 546 record forms) and increased ecological validity compared with previous studies. As a result, this study is likely to improve training in an area that has been established as a core competency for school, clinical, and counselling psychologists.

AbstractPython is considered to be a mature programming language, besides of being widely accepted as an engaging option for scientific analysis in multiple areas, as will be presented in this work for the particular case of solar physics research. SunPy is an open-source library based on Python that has been recently developed to furnish software tools to solar data analysis and visualization. In this work we present a graphical user interface (GUI) based on Python and Qt to effectively compute proper motions for the analysis of time series of solar data. This user-friendly computing interface, that is intended to be incorporated to the Sunpy library, uses a local correlation tracking technique and some extra tools that allows the selection of different parameters to calculate, vizualize and analyze vector velocity fields of solar data, i.e. time series of solar filtergrams and magnetograms.

ABSTRACT Transmitted light imaging is an important tool in biophysics for applications that include sample analysis, recording samples whose viability is compromised by high levels of illumination (e.g., live cell tracking), and finding regions of interest in a sample. Koehler transillumination is a powerful illumination method used in commercial microscopes; yet commercial Koehler condensers are expensive, are difficult to integrate into tabletop systems, and make learning the concepts of Koehler illumination difficult because of their closed-box nature. Here, we show a protocol to build a simple 4f Koehler illumination system that offers advantages with respect to commercial condensers in terms of simplicity, cost, and compatibility with tabletop systems, such as open-source light sheet fluorescence microscopes. We include step-by-step instructions that can be followed by advanced undergraduate or graduate students without experience in optics on how to align and assemble the illuminator, along with a list of the necessary parts for assembly. We also include supplemental material that describes 4 supporting educational activities students can conduct with the apparatus and helps in the understanding of key concepts relevant to Koehler illumination and optics. The performance of the system is comparable to that of commercial condensers and significantly better, in terms of illumination homogeneity and depth of field (optical sections are possible), than that of LED flashlights, such as those found in low-cost diagnostic devices and tabletop systems.

The problems of the Russian technical master degree are considered on the example of the “pain points” of the Russian bridge-building education. The analysis is carried out in the school-university group, and the university examines the chain of undergraduate, graduate, postgraduate studies, preparation and defense of a thesis and writing books, textbooks for bachelors, undergraduates and graduate students. It is noted that the selection of «humanists» and «techies» at the school level by allowing the first not to pass the exam in physics leads to a decrease in potential candidates for admission to technical specialties of universities and the creation in society of a large group of young people who are not ready for further activities in technical areas . Also, a large number of humanitarian subjects are taught in technical specialties of higher education institutions and therefore “techies” are also ready to work in these areas, but not even a general technical subject is studied in humanitarian and economic specialties. A brief description and comparison of 12 master’s programs (including foreign) in bridge building is given. The problems of modern 4 year postgraduate studies are described, as well as the organization of defending a thesis with a small number of dissertation councils and limiting the number of suitable opponents. We also briefly reviewed the «pain points» concerning teachers of engineering universities, their workload, salary, and the ability to engage in scientific research. In conclusion, considered a number of ways to solve these problems.
