Today, working in paid employment is the norm for women in France, and many of them are working in associations, which the authors regard as a specific type of civil society organisations. In this chapter, the authors enquire whether working in associations can lead to women’s emancipation. Firstly, they show that associations play an important economic role for women and create a particularly distinctive relationship to work, but they also emphasise the poor quality of the jobs in which women are disproportionately represented. The authors then discuss the effects of women’s employment in associations in terms of emancipation: they suggest that associations tend to maintain gendered norms rather than challenging them even when the organisations are feminist oriented. The risk is then that women may not achieve real recognition for their contribution unless the associations engage in a clear policy in favour of equality between men and women.

Democracy, pluralism, Pancasila, and religious freedom become a heated debate in Indonesia because they are not only theoretical and conceptual but also have a significant influence on many aspects of the nation’s life. Moreover, the demand for the implementation of sharī’ah from a small number of Muslim groups continues to echoe in this country which, off course, concern also the Christians who become the second largest population in this country. This paper is an attempt to examine the Christians’ participation in democracy and Pancasila amids the demand for the implementation of sharī’ah in Indonesia. It discusses theological perspectives for Christians’ participation in the public space, a brief history of the struggle on sharī’ah law and Pancasila, and how Christians have and should respond through civil society. The paper argues that Christians can participate in many ways in democratization and defending Pancasila in Indonesia through the channels of civil society. Keywords: Democracy, Pancasila, Shari’ah, Indonesian Christians

The goal is to study the essence of dialectical principles for-other and for-self and their modes, which form one of the levels of the spatiotemporal structure of human existence — personal chronotopology. The theoretical and methodological basis is due to the synthesis of the cultural centrism, dialectical and organicist models of the universe, the relational interpretation of time and space and the chronotopological concept. As a result, the dialectical foundations of the formation of the spatiotemporal frame of the human personality are revealed according to the principles for-other and for-self. The principle for-other forms the personal chronotope, placing it in a situation of communication with others, depriving the personal being of independence, isolation, immersing it in the sphere of alienation and care that characterizes the public space of social chronotopology. But it is precisely in the event of alienation and the existential fall of communication for-other that the personal world is reconstructed through deformation and destruction into a sphere that has the ability to copresence with the personal worlds of Others, who are firstly discovered as equal and independent actors of social sphere. At the for-other stage, the person joins social chronotopology, gets the ability to orientate in the world around him and opens the way to finding the next for-self stage. The chronotopological principle for-self serves as the final generative model of space and time of the human personality, according to which the personal world opens up the possibility of existence, freedom, involvement with the transcendent, catharsis and ecstatic experience, fullness of being, existentially genuine coexistence with the Other. The principle for-self finally constructs a personal chronotope and enriching him with an ethical, aesthetic, axiological and existential horizon.

In the theoretical literature on global democracy, the influential transmission belt model depicts transnational civil society as a transmission belt between the public space and the empowered space (decision-making loci), assuming that civil society actors contribute to the democratization of global governance by transmitting peoples’ preferences from the public space to the empowered space through involvement in the political decision-making. In this article, two claims are made. First, I argue that the transmission belt model fails because insofar as civil society has formalized influence in the decision-making, it is illegitimate, and insofar as it has informal influence, it is legitimate, but civil society’s special status as transmitter is dissolved. Second, I argue that civil society is better understood as a transmission belt, not between the public space and the empowered space, but between the private space (lifeworld) and the public space. It is here that civil society is essential for democracy, with its unique capacity to stay attuned to concerns in the lifeworld and to communicate those in a publically accessible form.
