ABSTRACTAnalysis of the performance of a 1/4.71 model-scale and full-scale Sikorsky S-76 main rotor in hover is presented using the multi-block computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solver of Glasgow University. For the model-scale blade, three different tip shapes were compared for a range of collective pitch and tip Mach numbers. It was found that the anhedral tip provided the highest Figure of Merit. Rigid and elastic full-scale S-76 rotor blades were investigated using a loosely coupled CFD/Computational Structural Dynamics (CSD) method. Results showed that aeroelastic effects were more significant for high thrust cases. Finally, an acoustic study was performed in the tip-path-plane of both rotors, showing good agreement in the thickness and loading noise with the theory. For the anhedral tip of the model-scale blade, a reduction of 5% of the noise level was predicted. The overall good agreement with the theory and experimental data demonstrated the capability of the present CFD method to predict rotor flows accurately.

From the aspect of reducing the risk of crystallization on nozzle surface, a new design of nozzle protective cover was to solve the problem in selective catalytic reduction (SCR) urea injection system. The simulation calculation and experimental verification methods were used to compare different schemes. The results show that reducing the height of nozzle holder can reduce the vortex currents near nozzle surface and effectively reduce the risk of crystallization on the nozzle surface. It is proposed to install a protective cover in the nozzle holder under the scheme of reducing the height of nozzle holder, which can further eliminate the vortex. Simulation and test results demonstrate good agreement under the rated running condition. The scheme of adding a protective cover in the nozzle holder shows the least crystallization risk by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method. The crystallization cycle test shows that, after the height of nozzle holder is reduced, the risk of crystallization on the nozzle surface is reduced correspondingly. The addition of a protective cover in the nozzle holder solves the problem of crystallization on the nozzle surface, which provides a new method for anti-crystallization design.

A windcatcher is a structure for providing natural ventilation using wind power; it is usually fitted on the roof of a building to exhaust the inside stale air to the outside and supplies the outside fresh air into the building interior space working by pressure difference between outside and inside of the building. In this paper, the behavior of free wind flow through a three-dimensional room fitted with a centered position two-canal bottom shape windcatcher model is investigated numerically, using a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software package and LES (Large Eddy Simulation) CFD method. The results have been compared with the obtained results for the same model but using RANS (Reynolds Averaged Navier–Stokes) CFD method. The model with its surrounded space has been considered in both method. It is found that the achieved results for the model from LES method are in good agreement with RANS method’s results for the same model.

Abstract The aerodynamic and aeroelastic behaviour of a rotor become more complex as advance ratios increase to achieve high-speed forward fight. As the rotor blades encounter large regions of cross and reverse flows during each revolution, strong variations in the local Mach regime are encountered, inducing complex elastic blade deformations. In addition, the wake system may remain in the vicinity of the rotor, adding complexity to the blade loading. The aeroelastic behaviour of a model rotor with advance ratios ranging from 0·5 to 2·0 has been evaluated with aerodynamics provided via a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method. Significant radial blade-vortex interaction can occur at a high advance ratio; the advance ratio at which this occurs is dependent on the rotor configuration. This condition is accompanied by high vibratory loads, peak negative torsion, and peak torsion and in-plane loads. The high vibratory loading increases the sensitivity of the trim model, so that at some high advance ratios the vibratory loads must be filtered to achieve a trimmed state.

Estimating ship resistance accurately in different water depths is crucial to design a resistance-optimized hull form and to estimate the minimum required power. This paper presents a validation of a new procedure used for resistance correction of different water depths proposed by Raven, and it presents the numerical simulations of a Kriso container ship (KCS) for different water depth/draught ratios. Model-scale and full-scale ship resistances were predicted using in-house computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code: HUST-Ship. Firstly, the mathematical model is established and the numerical uncertainties are analyzed to ensure the reliability of the subsequent calculations. Secondly, resistances of different water depth/draught ratios are calculated for a KCS scaled model and a full-scale KCS. The simulation results show a similar trend for the change of model-scale and full-scale resistance in different water depths. Finally, the correction procedure proposed by Raven is briefly introduced, and the CFD resistance simulation results of different water depth/draught ratios are compared with the results estimated using the Raven method. Generally, the reliability of the HUST-Ship solver used for predicting ship resistance is proved, and the practicability of the Raven method is discussed.

In this paper, we outline and validate a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method for determining the hydrodynamic forces of an escort tug in indirect towing mode. We consider a range of yaw angles from 0° to 90° and a travel speed of 8 knots. We discuss the effects of scaling on prediction of flow separation and hydrodynamic forces acting on the vessel by carrying out CFD studies on both model and full-scale escort tugs performing indirect escort maneuvers. As the escort performance in terms of maximum steering forces is strongly dependent on the onset of flow separation from the hull and skeg of the tug, the model-scale simulations under-predict the maximum steering force by 12% relative to the full-scale simulations. In addition, we provide a method for converting the hydrodynamic forces of the CFD escort study into towline and thrust forces.

When two vessels are positioned close to each other in a current, significant shielding or interaction effects can be observed. In this paper the current loads are determined for a LNG carrier alone, a Shuttle tanker alone and both vessels in side-by-side configuration. The current loads are determined by means of tow tests in a water basin at scale 1:60 and by CFD calculations at model-scale and full-scale Reynolds number. The objective of the measurements was to obtain reference data including shielding effects. CFD calculations at model-scale Reynolds number are carried out and compared with the model test results to determine the capability of CFD to predict the side-by-side current load coefficients. Furthermore, CFD calculations at full-scale Reynolds number are performed to determine the scale effects on current loads. We estimate that the experimental uncertainty ranges between 3% and 5% for the force coefficients CY and CMZ and between 3% and 10% for CX. Based on a grid sensitivity study the numerical sensitivity is estimated to be below 5%. Considering the uncertainties mentioned above, we assume that a good agreement between experiments and CFD calculations is obtained when the difference is within 10%. The best agreement between the model test results and the CFD results for model-scale Reynolds number is obtained for the CY coefficient with differences around 5%. For the CX coefficient the difference can be larger as this coefficient is mainly dominated by the friction component. In the model tests this force is small and therefore difficult to measure. In the CFD calculations the turbulence model used may not be suitable to capture transition from laminar to turbulent flow. A good agreement (around 5% difference) is obtained for the moment coefficient for headings without shielding effects. With shielding effects larger differences can be obtained as for these headings a slight deviation in the wake behind the upstream vessel may result in a large difference for the moment coefficient. Comparing the CFD results at full-scale Reynolds number with the CFD results at model-scale Reynolds number significant differences are found for friction dominated forces. For the CX coefficient a reduction up to 50% can be observed at full-scale Reynolds number. The differences for pressure dominated forces are smaller. For the CY coefficient 5–10% lower values are obtained at full-scale Reynolds number. The moment coefficient CMZ is also dominated by the pressure force, but up to 30% lower values are found at full-scale Reynolds number. The shielding effects appear to be slightly smaller at full-scale Reynolds number as the wake from the upstream vessel is slightly smaller in size resulting in larger forces on the downstream vessel.

A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method has been applied to gear configurations with and without shrouding. The goals of this work have been to validate the numerical and modeling approaches used for these applications and to develop physical understanding of the aerodynamics of gear windage loss. Several spur gear geometries are considered, for which experimental data are available. Various canonical shrouding configurations and free spinning (no shroud) cases are studied. Comparisons are made with experimental data from open literature, and data recently obtained in the NASA Glenn Research Center Gear Windage Test Facility, Cleveland, OH. The results show good agreement with the experiment. The parametric shroud configuration studies carried out in the Glenn experiments and the CFD analyses elucidate the physical mechanisms of windage losses as well as mitigation strategies due to shrouding and newly proposed tooth contour modifications.

The presented research validates the capability of a loosely coupled computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and comprehensive rotorcraft analysis (CRA) code to calculate the flowfield around a rotor and test stand mounted inside a wind tunnel. The CFD/CRA predictions for the Full-Scale UH-60A Airloads Rotor inside the National Full-Scale Aerodynamics Complex (NFAC) 40- by 80-Foot Wind Tunnel at NASA Ames Research Center are compared with the latest measured airloads and performance data. The studied conditions include a speed sweep at constant lift up to an advance ratio of 0.4 and a thrust sweep at constant speed up to and including stall. For the speed sweep, wind tunnel modeling becomes important at advance ratios greater than 0.37 and test stand modeling becomes increasingly important as the advance ratio increases. For the thrust sweep, both the wind tunnel and test stand modeling become important as the rotor approaches stall. Despite the beneficial effects of modeling the wind tunnel and test stand, the new models do not completely resolve the current airload discrepancies between prediction and experiment.

Pilot-control globe valve (PCGV) can use the pressure drop caused by fluid flowing through the orifice located at valve core bottom to open or close the main valve using a small pilot valve. In this paper, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method is adopted to analyze the pressure drop before and after valve core of PCGV and minor loss of orifice under different structural parameters and inlet velocities, and the simulation results show a good agreement with the experimental results. It turns out that the valve diameters, orifice diameters, and pilot pipe diameters have great influences on the pressure drop and the loss coefficient. Moreover, an expression is proposed which can be used to calculate minor loss coefficient, then to estimate the pressure drop and driving force of a PCGV within limited conditions. This paper can be referenced as guidance for deciding the dimension of structural parameters and spring stiffness during design process of a PCGV.
