Droplet deformation and heat transfer in isotropic turbulence

The heat and mass transfer of deformable droplets in turbulent flows is crucial to a wide range of applications, such as cloud dynamics and internal combustion engines. This study investigates a single droplet undergoing phase change in isotropic turbulence using numerical simulations with a hybrid lattice Boltzmann scheme. Phase separation is controlled by a non-ideal equation of state and density contrast is taken into consideration. Droplet deformation is caused by pressure and shear stress at the droplet interface. The statistics of thermodynamic variables are quantified and averaged over both the liquid and vapour phases. The occurrence of evaporation and condensation is correlated to temperature fluctuations, surface tension variation and turbulence intensity. The temporal spectra of droplet deformations are analysed and related to the droplet surface area. Different modes of oscillation are clearly identified from the deformation power spectrum for low Taylor Reynolds number $Re_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}}$, whereas nonlinearities are produced with the increase of $Re_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}}$, as intermediate frequencies are seen to overlap. As an outcome, a continuous spectrum is observed, which shows a decrease in the power spectrum that scales as ${\sim}f^{-3}$. Correlations between the droplet Weber number, deformation parameter, fluctuations of the droplet volume and thermodynamic variables are also developed.

AbstractAtmospheric motions in clouds and cloud surrounding have a wide range of scales, from several kilometers to centimeters. These motions have different impacts on cloud dynamics and microphysics. Larger-scale motions (hereafter referred to as convective motions) are responsible for mass transport over distances comparable with cloud scale, while motions of smaller scales (hereafter referred to as turbulent motions) are stochastic and responsible for mixing and cloud dilution. This distinction substantially simplifies the analysis of dynamic and microphysical processes in clouds. The present research is Part 1 of the study aimed at describing the method for separating the motion scale into a convective component and a turbulent component. An idealized flow is constructed, which is a sum of an initially prescribed field of the convective velocity with updrafts in the cloud core and downdrafts outside the core, and a stochastic turbulent velocity field obeying the turbulent properties, including the -5/3 law and the 2/3 structure function law. A wavelet method is developed allowing separation of the velocity field into the convective and turbulent components, with parameter values being in a good agreement with those prescribed initially. The efficiency of the method is demonstrated by an example of a vertical velocity field of a cumulus cloud simulated using SAM with bin-microphysics and resolution of 10 m. It is shown that vertical velocity in clouds indeed can be represented as a sum of convective velocity (forming zone of cloud updrafts and subsiding shell) and a stochastic velocity obeying laws of homogeneous and isotropic turbulence.

Aerodynamic heating due to turbulence significantly affects the operation of high-speed vehicles and the entrainment of fluid by turbulent plumes. In this paper, the heat generated and convected by fluid turbulence is examined by rearranging the Navier-Stokes equations into a single equation for the fluctuating dependent variables external to unsteady chaotic motions. This equation is similar to the nonhomogeneous heat equation where sources are terms resulting from this rearrangement. Mean and fluctuating quantities are introduced, and under certain circumstances, a heat equation for the fluctuating density results with corresponding mean and fluctuating source terms. The resultant equation is similar to Lighthill’s acoustic analogy and is a “heat analogy.” A solution is obtained with the use of Green’s function as long as the observer is located outside the region of chaotic motion. Predictions for the power spectrum are shown for high Reynolds number isotropic turbulence. The power spectrum decays as the inverse of the wavenumber of the turbulent velocity fluctuations. The developed theory can easily be applied to other turbulent flows if the statistics of unsteady motion can be estimated.

The addition of dispersants, water and oil soluble surfactants that lower the interfacial tension of the crude oil, along with oceanic turbulence can breakdown oil spills into droplets. Knowledge of the dispersion rate of these droplets by oceanic turbulence is essential for the development of better models to assess the environmental impact of spills. The objective of this research is to study, experimentally, the dispersion of oil droplets in turbulent flows. The measurements are performed in a specialized laboratory facility that enables generation of carefully controlled, isotropic, homogeneous turbulence at a wide range of fully characterized intensities and length scales. The oil dispersion is visualized using high-speed inline digital holographic cinematography. Holographic data has been analyzed and Lagrangian statistics of droplet velocity, dispersion and acceleration has been calculated. As the relative size of the droplet diameter to the Kolmogorov length scale and its Stokes number increases, the acceleration autocorrelation shifts from dropping to zero faster than the fluid particles to slower.

AbstractIn an experimental procedure, a voltage rise anemometry is developed as a measurement technique for turbulent flows. Initially, fundamental investigations on a specific wind tunnel were performed for basic understanding and calibration purpose. Thus, a mathematical correlation is derived for calculating flow from measured secondary voltage of an ignition system under different thermodynamic conditions. Subsequently, the derived method was applied on a spark-ignited engine to measure in-cylinder flow. Therefore, no changes on combustion chamber were necessary avoiding any interferences of the examined flow field. Comparing four different engine configurations, a study of mean flow and turbulence was performed. Moreover, the results show a clear correlation between measured turbulence and analysed combustion parameters. Graphic abstract

This paper reports a numerical investigation of the transcritical droplet vaporization phenomena. The simulation is based on the time-dependent conservation equations for liquid and gas phases, pressure-dependent variable thermophysical properties, and a detailed treatment of liquid-vapor phase equilibrium at the droplet surface. The numerical solution of the two-phase equations employs an arbitrary Eulerian-Lagrangian, explicit-implicit method with a dynamically adaptive mesh. Three different equations of state (EOS), namely the Redlich-Kwong (RK), the Peng-Robinson (PR), and Soave-Redlich-Kwong (SRK) EOS, are employed to represent phase equilibrium at the droplet surface. In addition, two different methods are used to determine the liquid density. Results indicate that the predictions of RK-EOS are significantly different from those obtained by using the RK-EOS and SRK-EOS. For the phase-equilibrium of n-heptane-nitrogen system, the RK-EOS predicts higher liquid-phase solubility of nitrogen, higher fuel vapor concentration, lower critical-mixing-state temperature, and lower enthalpy of vaporization. As a consequence, it significantly overpredicts droplet vaporization rates, and underpredicts droplet lifetimes compared to those predicted by PR and SRK-EOS. In contrast, predictions using the PR-EOS and SRK-EOS show excellent agreement with each other and with experimental data over a wide range of conditions. A detailed investigation of the transcritical droplet vaporization phenomena indicates that at low to moderate ambient temperatures, the droplet lifetime first increases and then decreases as the ambient pressure is increased. At high ambient temperatures, however, the droplet lifetime decreases monotonically with pressure. This behavior is in accord with the reported experimental data.

This paper examines and compares spectral measurements from a turbulent round jet and a turbulent boundary layer. The conjecture that is examined is that both flows consist of coherent structures immersed in a background of isotropic turbulence. In the case of the jet, a single size of coherent structure is considered, whereas in the boundary layer there are a range of sizes of geometrically similar structures. The conjecture is examined by comparing experimental measurements of spectra for the two flows with the spectra calculated using models based on simple vortex structures. The universality of the small scales is considered by comparing high-wavenumber experimental spectra. It is shown that these simple structural models give a good account of the turbulent flows.

Turbulent flows carry mechanical energy distributed over a range of temporal and spatial scales and their interaction with a thin immersed piezoelectric beam results in a strain field which generates electrical charge. This energy harvesting method can be used for developing self-powered electronic devices such as flow sensors. In the present experimental work, various energy harvesters were placed in a turbulent boundary layer or inside a decaying flow field of homogeneous and isotropic turbulence. The role of large instantaneous turbulent structures in this rather complex fluid-structure interaction is discussed in interpreting the electrical output results. The forces acting on the vibrating beams have been measured dynamically and a theory has been developed which incorporates the effects of mean local velocity, turbulence intensity, the relative size of the beam’s length to the integral length scale of turbulence, the structural properties of the beam and the electrical properties of the active piezoelectric layer to provide reasonable estimates of the mean electrical power output. Experiments have been carried out in which these fluidic harvesters are immersed first in inhomogeneous turbulence like that encountered in boundary layers developing over solid walls and homogeneous and isotopic turbulence for which a simplified analytical description exists. It was found that there is a non-linear effect of turbulence length scales on the power output of the fluidic harvesters.

Abstract Turbulent magnetically flows occur in a wide range of material processing systems involving electrically conducting melts. This paper presents a parallel higher order scheme for the direct numerical simulation of turbulent magnetically driven flows in induction channels. The numerical method is based on the higher order finite difference algorithm, which enjoys the spectral accuracy while minimizing the computational intensity. This, coupled with the parallel computing strategy, provides a very useful means to simulate turbulent flows. The higher order finite difference formulation of magnetically driven flow problems is described in this paper. The details of the parallel algorithm and its implementation for the simulations on parallel machines are discussed. The accuracy and numerical performance of the higher order finite difference scheme are assessed in comparison with the spectral method. The examples of turbulent magnetically driven flows in induction channels and pressure gradient driven flows in regular channels are given, and the computed results are compared with experimental measurements wherever possible.

Abstract Dilute combustion, either using exhaust gas recirculation or with excess-air, is considered a promising strategy to improve the thermal efficiency of internal combustion engines. However, the dilute air-fuel mixture, especially under intensified turbulence and high-pressure conditions, poses significant challenges for ignitability and combustion stability, which may limit the attainable efficiency benefits. In-depth knowledge of the flame kernel evolution to stabilize ignition and combustion in a challenging environment is crucial for effective engine development and optimization. To date, comprehensive understanding of ignition processes that result in the development of fully predictive ignition models usable by the automotive industry does not yet exist. Spark-ignition consists of a wide range of physics that includes electrical discharge, plasma evolution, joule-heating of gas, and flame kernel initiation and growth into a self-sustainable flame. In this study, an advanced approach is proposed to model spark-ignition energy deposition and flame kernel growth. To decouple the flame kernel growth from the electrical discharge, a nanosecond pulsed high-voltage discharge is used to trigger spark-ignition in an optically accessible small ignition test vessel with a quiescent mixture of air and methane. Initial conditions for the flame kernel, including its thermodynamic state and species composition, are derived from a plasma-chemical equilibrium calculation. The geometric shape and dimension of the kernel are characterized using a multi-dimensional thermal plasma solver. The proposed modeling approach is evaluated using a high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics procedure to compare the simulated flame kernel evolution against flame boundaries from companion schlieren images.
