Effect of an internal nonlinear rotational dissipative element on vortex shedding and vortex-induced vibration of a sprung circular cylinder

We computationally investigate coupling of a nonlinear rotational dissipative element to a sprung circular cylinder allowed to undergo transverse vortex-induced vibration (VIV) in an incompressible flow. The dissipative element is a ‘nonlinear energy sink’ (NES), consisting of a mass rotating at fixed radius about the cylinder axis and a linear viscous damper that dissipates energy from the motion of the rotating mass. We consider the Reynolds number range $20\leqslant Re\leqslant 120$, with $Re$ based on cylinder diameter and free-stream velocity, and the cylinder restricted to rectilinear motion transverse to the mean flow. Interaction of this NES with the flow is mediated by the cylinder, whose rectilinear motion is mechanically linked to rotational motion of the NES mass through nonlinear inertial coupling. The rotational NES provides significant ‘passive’ suppression of VIV. Beyond suppression however, the rotational NES gives rise to a range of qualitatively new behaviours not found in transverse VIV of a sprung cylinder without an NES, or one with a ‘rectilinear NES’, considered previously. Specifically, the NES can either stabilize or destabilize the steady, symmetric, motionless-cylinder solution and can induce conditions under which suppression of VIV (and concomitant reduction in lift and drag) is accompanied by a greatly elongated region of attached vorticity in the wake, as well as conditions in which the cylinder motion and flow are temporally chaotic at relatively low $Re$.

The flow of grid-generated turbulence past a circular cylinder is investigated using hot-wire anemometry over a Reynolds number range from 4·25 × 103 to 2·74 × 104 and a range of intensities from 0·025 to 0·062. Measurements of the mean velocity distribution, and r.m.s. intensities and spectral energy densities of the turbulent velocity fluctuations are presented for various radial and circumferential positions relative to the cylinder, and for ratios of the cylinder radius a to the scale of the incident turbulence Lx ranging from 0·05 to 1·42. The influence of upstream conditions on the flow in the cylinder wake and its associated induced velocity fluctuations is discussed.For all measurements, detailed comparison is made with the theoretical predictions of Hunt (1973). We conclude the following. The amplification and reduction of the three components of turbulence (which occur in different senses for the different components) can be explained qualitatively in terms of the distortion by the mean flow of the turbulent vorticity and the ‘blocking’ or ‘source’ effect caused by turbulence impinging on the cylinder surface. The relative importance of the first effect over the second increases as a/Lx increases or the distance from the cylinder surface increases.Over certain ranges of the variables involved, the measurements are in quantitative agreement with the predictions of the asymptotic theory when a/Lx [Lt ] 1, a/Lx [Gt ] 1 or |k| a [Gt ] 1 (where k is the wavenumber).The incident turbulence affects the gross properties of the flow in the cylinder wake, but the associated velocity fluctuations are probably statistically independent of those in the incident flow.The dissipation of turbulent energy is greater in the straining flow near the cylinder than in the approach flow. Some estimates for this effect are proposed.

We study the nonlinear fluid-structure interaction of an elastically supported rigid circular cylinder in a laminar flow. Periodic shedding of counter-rotating vortices from either side of the cylinder results in vortex-induced vibration of the cylinder. We demonstrate the passive suppression of the limit cycle oscillation (LCO) of the cylinder with the use of an essentially nonlinear element, the nonlinear energy sink (NES). The computational study is performed at a Reynolds number (Re) of 100; Re is defined based on the cylinder diameter and inlet velocity. The variational multiscale residual-based stabilized finite-element method is used to compute approximate solutions of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The NES is comprised of a small mass, an essentially nonlinear spring, and a linear damper. With appropriate values for the NES parameters, the coupled system of flow-cylinder-NES exhibits resonant interactions, resulting in targeted energy transfer (TET) from the flow via the cylinder to the NES, where the energy is dissipated by the linear damper. The NES interacts with the fluid via the cylinder by altering the phase relation between the lift force and the cylinder displacement; this brings about significant reduction in the LCO amplitude of the cylinder for several set of values of the NES parameters.

The vortex-induced vibration (VIV) suppression of a circular cylinder with the axial-slats is numerically investigated using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method for Reynolds number range of 8.0 × 103–5.6 × 104. The two-dimensional unsteady Reynolds averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) equations and Shear-Stress-Transport (SST) turbulence model are used to calculate the flow around the cylinder in ANSYS Fluent. The Newmark-β method is used to evaluate structural dynamics. The amplitude response, frequency response and vortex pattern are discussed. The suppression effect of the axial-slats is the best when the gap ratio is 0.10 and the coverage ratio is 30%. Based on the VIV response, the whole VIV response region is divided into four regions (Region I, Region II, Region III and Region IV). The frequency ratio of isolated cylinder jumps between region II and region III. However, the frequency ratio jumps between region I and region II for a cylinder with the axial-slats. The axial-slats destroy the original vortex and make the vortex easier to separate. The online amplitude ratio is almost completely suppressed, and the cross-flow amplitude ratio is significantly suppressed.

The vortex induced vibration (VIV) on a circular cylinder with low mass-damping parameter and low Reynolds number is investigated numerically as basis for applications on dynamics of risers used in the offshore oil and gas industry and as a first step before tackling the harder high Reynolds number problem. The cylinder is supported by a spring and a damper and free to vibrate in the transverse direction. The numerical solution of the Reynolds average Navier-Stokes equations written in curvilinear coordinates is obtained using an upwind and Total Variation Diminishing conservative scheme and the k-ε turbulence model is used to simulate the turbulent flow in the wake of the body. Results were obtained for the phase angle, response amplitude, frequency, and lift coefficient for a variation of reduced velocity from 2 to 12 and three different proportional variations of Reynolds number, 2000–6000, 2000–12000, and 2000–24000. The numerical results indicate the strong effect of the Reynolds number range on the response amplitude, lift coefficient, and frequency of oscillation for a low mass-damping parameter.

Numerous experimental and numerical studies have been carried out to better understand and to improve prediction of cylinder VIV (vortex Induced Vibration) phenomenon. The behavior of cylinder due to in-line vibration (VIVx) has been neglected in the earlier studies because of its lower amplitude in comparison with cross flow vibration (VIVy). However, some researchers have studied VIVx in 2DOF along with VIVy. Recent investigations show that response amplitude of structure caused by VIVx is large enough to bring it to consideration. This study focuses on understanding the origin and prediction of VIVx amplitude exclusively in 1DOF and subcritical flow regime. The experiments were performed in current channel on bare circular cylinder with low mass-damping ratio in Reynolds number range Re = 10000 ∼ 45000.

Experiments have been carried out with models of free-to-rotate parallel and oblique plates fitted to a rigid section of circular cylinder to investigate the effect of plate length and oblique angle on the stability of this type of vortex-induced vibration (VIV) suppressor. Measurements of the dynamic response and trajectories of motion are presented for models with low mass and damping which are free to respond in the cross-flow and streamwise directions. It is shown that, depending on a combination of some geometric parameters, the devices might not be able to completely suppress VIV for the whole range of reduced velocities investigated. Plates with larger oblique angles turned to be less stable than parallel plates and induced high-amplitude vibrations for specific reduced velocities. Systems may present streamwise vibration due to strong flow separation and reattachment on the outer surface of plates with large oblique angles. Large angles may also increase drag. Experiments with a plain cylinder in the Reynolds number range from 3000 to 20,000 have been performed to serve as reference. Reduced velocity was varied between 2 and 13. Two-dimensional numerical simulation of static systems at Re = 10,000 revealed that complex and fully separated flow regimes exist for almost all investigated cases. There is a good chance that systems with such geometric characteristics will be unstable unless other structural parameters are positively verified.

While it has been known that an afterbody (i.e. the structural part of a bluff body downstream of the flow separation points) plays an important role affecting the wake characteristics and even may change the nature of the flow-induced vibration (FIV) of a structure, the question of whether an afterbody is essential for the occurrence of one particular common form of FIV, namely vortex-induced vibration (VIV), still remains. This has motivated the present study to experimentally investigate the FIV of an elastically mounted forward- or backward-facing D-section (closed semicircular) cylinder over the reduced velocity range $2.3\leqslant U^{\ast }\leqslant 20$, where $U^{\ast }=U/(f_{nw}D)$. Here, $U$ is the free-stream velocity, $D$ the cylinder diameter and $f_{nw}$ the natural frequency of the system in quiescent fluid (water). The normal orientation with the body’s flat surface facing upstream is known to be subject to another common form of FIV, galloping, while the reverse D-section with the body’s curved surface facing upstream, due to the lack of an afterbody, has previously been reported to be immune to VIV. The fluid–structure system was modelled on a low-friction air-bearing system in conjunction with a recirculating water channel facility to achieve a low mass ratio (defined as the ratio of the total oscillating mass to that of the displaced fluid mass). Interestingly, through a careful overall examination of the dynamic responses, including the vibration amplitude and frequency, fluid forces and phases, our new findings showed that the D-section exhibits a VIV-dominated response for $U^{\ast }<10$, galloping-dominated response for $U^{\ast }>12.5$, and a transition regime with a VIV–galloping interaction in between. Also observed for the first time were interesting wake modes associated with these response regimes. However, in contrast to previous studies at high Reynolds number (defined by $Re=UD/\unicode[STIX]{x1D708}$, with $\unicode[STIX]{x1D708}$ the kinematic viscosity), which have showed that the D-section was subject to ‘hard’ galloping that required a substantial initial amplitude to trigger, it was observed in the present study that the D-section can gallop softly from rest. Surprisingly, on the other hand, it was found that the reverse D-section exhibits pure VIV features. Remarkable similarities were observed in a direct comparison with a circular cylinder of the same mass ratio, in terms of the onset $U^{\ast }$ of significant vibration, the peak amplitude (only approximately 6 % less than that of the circular cylinder), and also the fluid forces and phases. Of most significance, this study shows that an afterbody is not essential for VIV at low mass and damping ratios.

A two-dimensional numerical simulation is applied to study the forces and responses associated with vortex-induced vibration of an elastically mounted circular cylinder with two degrees-of-freedom, i.e. the cylinder vibrates in in-line and cross-flow directions. This work could be regarded as a first step to carry out the prediction of vortex-induced-vibration responses of a long flexible beam with a number of two-dimension sections along the spanwise based on strip theory. A direct comparison has been made between the numerical results and measured data from the experiment by Jauvtis and Williamson in 2004. The peak cross flow response reaches 1.28 diameters in the present simulations. The profiles between the displacement and transverse force are found to have a good match with the experimental results, and a typical figure of ‘8’ trace is observed between the lift and drag forces in the initial and super-upper branches. Two typical in-line wake structures SS mode and AS mode are well reproduced in the low reduced velocity range. The newly discovered wake pattern 2T mode corresponds to the super-upper branch is also recaptured. Comparison shows that most features of the experiment can be reproduced by the present numerical model, and this model can be regarded a robust tool to investigate the responses, forces and the basic mechanics of vortex induced vibrations of an elastically mounted cylinder with two degrees-of-freedom.

Experiments have been conducted in a water channel in order to investigate the vortex-induced vibration (VIV) response of a rigid section of a curved circular cylinder. Two curved configurations were tested regarding the direction of the approaching flow, a concave or a convex cylinder, in addition to a straight cylinder that served as reference. Amplitude and frequency response are presented versus reduced velocity for a wide Reynolds number range between 750 and 15,000. Trajectories in the cross-flow and streamwise direction are presented as well for several reduced velocities. Results show a distinct behaviour from the typical VIV of a straight cylinder highlighting the effect of curvature on vortex formation and excitation. The concave configuration presents relatively high amplitudes of vibration that are sustained beyond the typical synchronisation region. The mechanism behind the response is not yet clear, although authors suggest it might be related to some kind of buffeting excitation due to the disturbed flow from the upstream horizontal part.
