Late Roman imported red slip ware in the Metelis region (Alexandria, Egypt)

AbstractThe study of red slip ware (RSW) imports in the Metelis region was bolstered by the significant presence of fine wares at the site of Kom al-Ahmer. The ancient town is located 44 km southeast of Alexandria. The study of the pottery is based on over 32,000 sherds, of which 472 are fine ware and 364 are imports from the Mediterranean basin and Upper Egypt. The flow of imported fine wares reflects the political events affecting Africa Proconsularis, in particular the invasion of the Vandals. Imports from Africa represent almost a monopoly on fine pottery imports through the first half of the fifth century. After the invasion, these were significantly reduced. However, there was no decline in the number of imported vessels and, from the mid-fifth century onwards, a considerable amount of Cypriot RSW and a smaller quantity of examples from Upper Egypt could be found. Thus, the change in pottery imports involved their areas of origin. After the Byzantine Empire conquered the North African region, pottery imports from Africa resumed in many Mediterranean contexts. This does not seem to have been the case at Metelis, where Cypriot RSW remained dominant and the imports of Egyptian RSW A and Aswan fine ware increased.

Abstract We present for the first time the climatology of medium-scale traveling ionospheric disturbances (MSTIDs) by using Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver networks on geomagnetically quiet days (Kp ≤ 3) over the North African region during 2008-2016. The MSTIDs appear frequently as oscillating waves or wave-like structures in electron density induced by the passage of Atmospheric Gravity Waves (AGW) propagating through the neutral atmosphere and consequently, causing fluctuation in the ionospheric Total Electron Content (TEC). The TEC perturbations (dTEC) data are derived from dual frequency GPS-measurements. We have statistically analyzed the MSTIDs characteristics, occurrence rate, seasonal behavior as well as the interannual dependence. The results show a local and seasonal dependence of nighttime and daytime MSTIDs. The propagation direction is predominantly towards the South (equatorward), MSTIDs event period is (12 ≤ period ≤ 53 mins), and dominant amplitude (0.08 ≤ amp ≤ ~1.5 TECU), with a propagation velocity higher at daytime than nighttime. The amplitudes of the MSTIDs increase with solar activity. The local MSTIDs Spatio-temporal heat reveals variability in disturbance occurrence time, but seems to be dominant within the hours of (Northwest: 1200–1600 LT) and (Northeast: 1000–1400 LT) in December solstice during daytime, and around (NW: 2100–0200 LT) and (NE: 1900–0200 LT) in June solstice, but get extended to March equinox during solar maximum (2014) during the nighttime. The time series of MSTIDs regional distribution map is also generated. Atmospheric gravity waves (AGW) seems to be responsible for the daytime MSTIDs occurrence.

Abstract Opuntia stricta is a cactus species native to the Americas that has been introduced worldwide as a popular ornamental. This species escaped from cultivation and has become invasive in many countries across Africa and Australia, but also more recently in the Mediterranean basin. Large and serious invasions have been reported in Australia, South Africa, Namibia, Yemen, India, Sri Lanka, Madagascar and lately also Spain and some North African countries. It has also become naturalized in many other regions (primarily in Africa and Asia) where it has not yet been recorded as a pest. In South Africa and Namibia large infestations have been reported, mainly in dry savanna bushlands, while in Australia all states are invaded with widespread populations invading southeastern Queensland and northeastern New South Wales. Successful biological control programmes have, however, severely reduced the spread of this species in many areas where introduced, though there continues to be a risk of further introduction through the nursery trade.

Background The olive tree is a typical crop of the Mediterranean basin where it shows a wide diversity, accounting for more than 2,600 cultivars. The ability to discriminate olive cultivars and determine their genetic variability is pivotal for an optimal exploitation of olive genetic resources. Methods We investigated the genetic diversity within 128 olive accessions belonging to four countries in the Mediterranean Basin (Italy, Algeria, Syria, and Malta), with the purpose of better understanding the origin and spread of the olive genotypes across Mediterranean Basin countries. Eleven highly polymorphic simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers were used and proved to be very informative, producing a total of 179 alleles. Results Cluster analysis distinguished three main groups according to their geographical origin, with the current sample of Maltese accessions included in the Italian group. Phylogenetic analysis further differentiated Italian and Maltese olive accessions, clarifying the intermediate position of Maltese accessions along the x/y-axes of principal coordinate analysis (PCoA). Model-based and neighbor clustering, PCoA, and migration analysis suggested the existence of two different gene pools (Algerian and Syrian) and that the genetic exchange occurred between the Syrian, Italian and Maltese populations. Discussion The close relationship between Syrian and Italian and Maltese olives was consistent with the historical domestication and migration of olive tree from the North Levant to eastern Mediterranean basin. This study lays the foundations for a better understanding of olive genetic diversity in the Mediterranean basin and represents a step toward an optimal conservation and exploitation of olive genetic resources.

We present an update of the Moroccan Eulophidae following samples collected in the Maâmora forest between 2012 and 2014, and completed with a thorough bibliographic study. We report seven genera for the first time in Morocco: Allocerastichus Masi, 1924; Euderomphale Girault, 1916; Eulophus Geoffroy, 1762; Euplectrus Westwood, 1832; Microlycus Thomson, 1878; Tamarixia Masi, 1924 and Trjapitzinichus Kostjukov & Kosheleva, 2006 and six species: Baryscapus impeditus (Nees, 1864); Ceranisus menes (Walker, 1839); Elachertus lateralis (Spinola, 1808); Elasmus atratus Howard, 1897; Microlycus biroi (Erdös, 1951) and Trjapitzinichus politus (Graham, 1991). A possible new species (Baryscapus n. sp.) and two unidentified species (Allocerastichus sp. and Euderomphale sp.) are included in the list of Moroccan Eulophidae. The daytime and nighttime MSTIDs increase with solar activity, and its event period is (12 ≤ period ≤ 53 mins), while the dominant amplitude is (0.08 ≤ amp ≤ ~1.5 dTECU). The MSTIDs propagation velocity is dominantly higher at the daytime than nighttime. The study also shows that the disturbance occurrence time is more frequent within the hours of (1200 - 1600 LT), and (1000 - 1400 LT) in December solstice at daytime for stations located in the Northwest (NW) and Northeast (NE) part of the African region, respectively. While at the nighttime, the MSTIDs also exhibits variability in disturbance occurrence time around (NW: 2100–0200 LT) and (NE: 1900–0200 LT) in June solstice, but get extended to March equinox during solar maximum (2014). The mean phase velocity in daytime MSTIDs is higher than the nighttime in every season, except during June solstice.

This paper analyses trends in domesticated reindeer numbers at the federal, regional, and local levels based on official statistics and interviews with herders in different northern districts across Russia. During the second half of the last century, the domesticated reindeer population in Russia shifted dramatically from a maximum of 2.5 million head to a minimum of 1.2. The most important trends were connected to changes in social and economic conditions linked to government directives. Post-Soviet reforms in the 1990s resulted in a nearly 50% reduction in the total number of domesticated reindeer. However in some regions, these political events had the opposite effect. The contrast was due to the abilities of herders to adapt to the new conditions. A detailed analysis of these adaptations reveals an important difference between reindeer-holding enterprises with common ownership (i.e. kolkhozes, sovkhozes, municipal enterprises, etc.) and households with family owned reindeer. The paper concludes that the effect the political context is so large as to conceal the impact of other natural factors on reindeer populations such as climate change. However, a gradual increase of reindeer populations in the north-eastern part of Russia in the 1960s can be associated with changes in atmospheric circulation patterns.

AbstractThe Libyan conflict has become an issue at the global level since its beginning. The foreign aid and support help got by the revolutionaries in their attempt to overthrow the Qaddafi regime and the role of tribes not only during these events but also afterwards, the country’s strategic position and oil reserves are the main points of interest when considering the North African internationalized civil war. While the role played by the tribes in stabilizing the political and social framework still lays at crossroads, being extremely controversial, the economic value and strategic importance of oil, for domestic actors as well as the international ones, are above any doubt.
