AbstractBennett Island stands alone in a remote part of the Arctic and information on its geology is essential to ascertain relations with other terranes in order to restore the early Palaeozoic Arctic palaeogeography. Lower Palaeozoic sedimentary rocks throughout the island were studied thoroughly for the first time. The Ordovician section (> 1.1 km thick) comprises three units: Tremadocian, lowest Floian black shale (130–140 m); Floian, lower Dapingian carbonate turbidite (> 250 m); and Dapingian, lower Darriwilian siliciclastic turbidite (> 730 m). Ordovician deposits conformably overlie Cambrian rocks deposited within the Siberian shelf, as shown earlier. Most of the Ordovician succession was formed in a deep trough that received carbonate debris from a nearby carbonate platform and silicate material from a distant landmass located to the NE (present coordinates). The Bennett Island Ordovician rocks have much in common with those of both the Central and Northern Taimyr belts. It could be tentatively suggested that both belts merged at their eastern continuation in the vicinity of De Long Islands. The whole system probably extends further eastwards. The Ordovician facies patterns and faunal assemblages in the New Siberian Islands are notably similar to those of northwestern Alaska, where the same lateral transition from turbidites to shelf limestones was reported.

AbstractThe presence of a carbonate platform that interfingers towards the west with slope facies allows for the identification of an ancient lower Palaeozoic continental margin in the Western Precordillera of Argentina. The Los Sombreros Formation is essential for the interpretation of the continental slope of the Precordillera, which accreted to Gondwana as part of the Cuyania Terrane in the early Palaeozoic. The age of these slope deposits is controversial; therefore, a precise biostratigraphic scheme is critical to reveal the evolution of the South American continental margin of Gondwana. The study of lithic deposits of two sections of the Los Sombreros Formation, the El Salto and Los Túneles sections, provides important information for further understanding the depositional history of the slope. At El Salto section, the conodonts recovered from an allochthonous block refer to the Cordylodus proavus Zone (upper Furongian). The conodonts recovered from the matrix of a calclithite bed of the Los Sombreros Formation in the Los Túneles section are assigned to the Lenodus variabilis Zone (early Darriwilian), providing a minimum age for this stratigraphic unit. In addition, clasts from this sample yielded conodonts from the Paltodus deltifer − Macerodus dianae zones (upper Tremadocian). The contrasting conodont colour alterations and preservation states from the elements of two latter records, coming from the same sample, argue the reworked clasts originated in the carbonate platform and later transported to the slope during the accretion process of the Precordilleran Terrane to the South American Gondwanan margin during the Middle–Late Ordovician.

Notable changes in the Arctic ecosystem driven by increased atmospheric temperature and ice cover reduction were observed in the last decades. Ongoing environmental shifts affect freshwater discharge to the Arctic Ocean, and alter Arctic land-ocean fluxes. The monitoring of DOC distribution and CDOM optical properties is of great interest both from the point of view of validation of remote sensing models, and for studying organic carbon transformation and dynamics. In this study we report the DOC concentrations and CDOM optical characteristics in the mixing zones of the Ob, Yenisei, Khatanga, Lena, Kolyma, and Indigirka rivers. Water sampling was performed in August–October 2015 and 2017. The DOC was determined by high-temperature combustion, and absorption coefficients and spectroscopic indices were calculated using the seawater absorbance obtained with spectrophotometric measurements. Kara and Laptev mixing zones were characterized by conservative DOC behavior, while the East Siberian sea waters showed nonconservative DOC distribution. Dominant DOM sources are discussed. The absorption coefficient aCDOM (350) in the East Siberian Sea was two-fold lower compared to Kara and Laptev seawaters. For the first time we report the DOC content in the Khatanga River of 802.6 µM based on the DOC in the Khatanga estuary.

Abstract The Cretaceous chaetetid sponge Acanthochaetetes huauclillensis Sánchez-Beristain and García-Barrera is reported for the first time from the Aptian–Cenomanian Khalsi Formation, Ladakh Himalaya, India. Its low- to high-domical growth form could suggest an adaptation to either an environment with constant sedimentation rates, or to an irregular substrate. However, these growth forms also may indicate an absence of important environmental/sedimentological changes during the lifespan of the sponges. In addition, the growth form of this species suggests a calm, non-turbulent, reef-like microenvironment. Along with the other faunal assemblages, such as the rudists, corals, and the gastropod Nerinea, A. huauclillensis indicates a tropical to subtropical shallow marine carbonate platform setting. This new finding extends its stratigraphic range from the upper Hauterivian to the Aptian–Cenomanian interval in the eastern Tethyan realm.

In 2007-2017, 22 occupational diseases were diagnosed for the first time in 18 workers engaged in aluminium production in the Arctic. A marked decrease in occupational morbidity in 2010-2017 was found, which was not associated with changes in working conditions and therefore requires an appropriate scientific explanation.

Abstract. We present a detailed discussion of the chemical and dynamical processes in the Arctic winters 1996/1997 and 2010/2011 with high resolution chemical transport model (CTM) simulations and space-based observations. In the Arctic winter 2010/2011, the lower stratospheric minimum temperatures were below 195 K for a record period of time, from December to mid-April, and a strong and stable vortex was present during that period. Simulations with the Mimosa-Chim CTM show that the chemical ozone loss started in early January and progressed slowly to 1 ppmv (parts per million by volume) by late February. The loss intensified by early March and reached a record maximum of ~2.4 ppmv in the late March–early April period over a broad altitude range of 450–550 K. This coincides with elevated ozone loss rates of 2–4 ppbv sh−1 (parts per billion by volume/sunlit hour) and a contribution of about 30–55% and 30–35% from the ClO-ClO and ClO-BrO cycles, respectively, in late February and March. In addition, a contribution of 30–50% from the HOx cycle is also estimated in April. We also estimate a loss of about 0.7–1.2 ppmv contributed (75%) by the NOx cycle at 550–700 K. The ozone loss estimated in the partial column range of 350–550 K exhibits a record value of ~148 DU (Dobson Unit). This is the largest ozone loss ever estimated in the Arctic and is consistent with the remarkable chlorine activation and strong denitrification (40–50%) during the winter, as the modeled ClO shows ~1.8 ppbv in early January and ~1 ppbv in March at 450–550 K. These model results are in excellent agreement with those found from the Aura Microwave Limb Sounder observations. Our analyses also show that the ozone loss in 2010/2011 is close to that found in some Antarctic winters, for the first time in the observed history. Though the winter 1996/1997 was also very cold in March–April, the temperatures were higher in December–February, and, therefore, chlorine activation was moderate and ozone loss was average with about 1.2 ppmv at 475–550 K or 42 DU at 350–550 K, as diagnosed from the model simulations and measurements.

Abstract. Radium-228 (228Ra), an almost conservative trace isotope in the ocean, supplied from the continental shelves and removed by a known radioactive decay (T1∕2 = 5. 75 years), can be used as a proxy to constrain shelf fluxes of other trace elements, such as nutrients, iron, or rare earth elements. In this study, we perform inverse modeling of a global 228Ra dataset (including GEOSECS, TTO and GEOTRACES programs, and, for the first time, data from the Arctic and around the Kerguelen Islands) to compute the total 228Ra fluxes toward the ocean, using the ocean circulation obtained from the NEMO 3.6 model with a 2° resolution. We optimized the inverse calculation (source regions, cost function) and find a global estimate of the 228Ra fluxes of 8.01–8. 49 × 1023 atoms yr−1, more precise and around 20 % lower than previous estimates. The largest fluxes are in the western North Atlantic, the western Pacific and the Indian Ocean, with roughly two-thirds in the Indo-Pacific Basin. An estimate in the Arctic Ocean is provided for the first time (0.43–0.50  ×  1023 atoms yr−1). Local misfits between model and data in the Arctic, the Gulf Stream and the Kuroshio regions could result from flaws of the ocean circulation in these regions (resolution, atmospheric forcing). As radium is enriched in groundwater, a large part of the 228Ra shelf sources comes from submarine groundwater discharge (SGD), a major but poorly known pathway for terrestrial mineral elements, including nutrients, to the ocean. In contrast to the 228Ra budget, the global estimate of SGD is rather unconstrained, between 1.3 and 14. 7 × 1013 m3 yr−1, due to high uncertainties on the other sources of 228Ra, especially diffusion from continental shelf sediments. Better precision on SGD cannot be reached by inverse modeling until a proper way to separate the contributions of SGD and diffusive release from sediments at a global scale is found.

The Caledonides of East Greenland contain the best exposures of Upper Riphean to Ordovician sediments in the Arctic - North Atlantic region. At its thickest the sequence contains 13 km of Eleonore Bay Group clastic sediments and carbonates, the 0.8 km thick Tillite Group and 3 km of Cambro-Ordovician strata (Henriksen & Higgins, 1976; Henriksen, 1985). These sediments crop out in a belt stretching for nearly 300 km through the fjord region, between 71° 38' and 74° 25'N. Those in the northern part of the region, between Brogetdal in Strindberg Land and southern Payer Land, and especiaIly Albert Heim Bjerge and C. H. Ostenfeld Nunatak, were the subject of investigation during 1988 (figs 1, 2).

In the region across the Serbian/Bulgarian state border, there are individualized 5 Jurassic paleogeographic units (from West to East): (1) the Thracian Massif Unit without Jurassic sediments; (2) the Luznica-Koniavo Unit - partially with Liassic in Grsten facies and with deep water Middle Callovian-Kimmeridgian (p. p) sediments of the type "ammonitico rosso", and Upper Kimmeridgian-Tithonian siliciclastics flysch; (3) The Getic Unit subdivided into two subunits - the Western Getic Sub-Uni - without Lower Jurassic sediments and the Eastern Getic Sub-Unit with Lower Jurassic continental and marine sediments, which are followed in both sub-units by carbonate platform limestones (type Stramberk); (4) the Infra (Sub)-Getic Unit - with relatively deep water Liassic and Dogger sediments (the Dogger of type "black shales with Bossitra alpine") and Middle Callovian-Tithonian of type "ammonitico rosso"; (5) the Danubian Unit - with shallow water Liassic, Dogger and Malm (Miroc-Vrska Cuka Zone, deep water Dogger and Malm (Donjomilanovacko-Novokoritska Zone).

Segmented poly(urethaneureas) (SPUUs) modified with low glass transition temperature chemically inert liquids are of interest due to their controllable properties and potential applications under various environmental conditions. Investigation into the influence of plasticizers on the properties of SPUUs based on oligotetramethyleneoxide diol (polytetramethyleneoxide), oligopropyleneoxide diol (polypropyleneoxide), 2,4-toluenediisocyanate, Ethacure-300, and methylene-bis- o-chloroaniline was conducted. Partial crystallization of polytetramethyleneoxide segments was identified during cooling of some SPUU samples plasticized by di-(2-ethylhexyl)sebacate (DEHS) and tributyl phosphate. Polypropyleneoxide segments did not crystallize under the same conditions. A low crystallization temperature for the amorphous component of the polymer matrix in SPUU (−100°C to 103°C) was attained at a molecular mass ( Mn) of soft segments equal to 2000 g mol−1 and a DEHS concentration equal to 40–45%. A relationship between the mechanical properties of plasticized SPUU, microphase segregation, and dilution of the polymer matrix was found. For the first time, the effect of dilution with plasticizer on the strength of elastomers was considered. The plasticization effect on the mechanical properties of SPUU was investigated in the temperature diapason from 50°C to −70°C. The results of these investigations can be used in various technologies including the design of SPUUs with high elastic properties at temperatures as low as −70°C, typical of extreme conditions of the Arctic climate.
